Have to agree with the above post. Olbermann is by all accounts a smug, condescending rear end in a top hat and a horrible jerk but he had the guts to call Bush out not just for Iraq but for all the heinous poo poo he pulled i.e. torture, rendition, warrantless wire-tapping, Valerie Plame, all of it. No one else had the balls to risk a ratings hit to do the right thing and despite his other less than desirable personal qualities, Olbermann did it when no one else would. For that he's a god damned hero.

A typical freeper type co-worker of mine brought up Egypt and the protests today at lunch. I try to stay out of politics at work but this was just such a softball. He kept going on about how Mursi is such a crook and Obama's best friend and all that, so I straight up asked him why he thought Mursi had done what he did with regards to judicial authority. Deer in the headlights (of course), so I explained that Mursi's position is that the judges were appointed under Mubarek and that their loyalty to the old regime calls into question their ability to rule impartially. I further asked him if he thought the Founders would have been cool with keeping all the Crown's judges in place after the American Revolution. I realize it's not a perfect analogy but the look on his face was just priceless.

As has been stated before, all of Olbermann's shortcomings don't undo the fact that he alone in the media stood up against the excesses of the War on Terror and was the first mainstream pundit to challenge the lockstep worship of the administration beginning in 2003. He's a dickbarn to be sure, but he was right when it counted.

Yes. You see, when "their" candidates get elected, it's America sending a message. When "our" candidates get elected, it's because the government is hopelessly lost and corrupt. The whole "let's start over and make a new America" idea was very pervasive within the militia community of the 1990s. It's the same now except that Obama is black and social media allows these people to have a sense of validation by posting stuff online freely.

I know it probably won't make you feel any better, but know that you didn't do anything wrong. When a person resorts to implicating violent threats against you for your opinions, it's just best to count it as a loss and move on. There's no reasoning with people like that because they have quite truly made the conscious choice to stop being reasonable. When the discussion over Glen Beck, Hannity, and the rest comes up, these are the types of scenarios I think of to justify my intense dislike of these people. They actively promote an incredibly dangerous way of thinking (I use that term loosely) and these sorts of results are natural outcomes when people start believing that the President of the United States, rather than just fire a gun, initiates a conspiracy to have a fake picture of him shooting a gun fabricated for unknown evil reasons.

I personally know people who believe and espouse both positions vocally. Umberto Eco even said that it's a part of the fascist mindset - constant re-framing of the message creates confusion in the minds of the cult's followers, leading to a belief that enemies of the state are both incredibly strong (thus requiring eternal vigilance) and incredibly weak (and are thus doomed to lose against the people). In Obama's case, I think them labeling him as a bumbling fool somehow makes them feel better about losing to him badly twice. I know it doesn't make sense but I think it's more of a defense mechanism than anything else.

They'll never forgive him for that.

Do you have any of those studies handy? I have a pretty open-minded friend who is on the fence about the minimum wage so if I could direct a few good studies his way it might convince him. When I told him about Australia's ~$15 minimum wage and that their unemployment rate is about 4.5% he almost poo poo his pants.
