No, I remember it too, they'd have like a slow crawl past a room full of prizes and have a little bubble in the corner with the person's face. I think they did a parody of that on Family Guy once, and made me think "Who the hell is going to get this reference?"

This first AMA is pretty hilarious too. I particularly like this answer:

quote:

Question: Did you have a "Duh!" moment when you missed the final jeopardy question with your answer of FedEx or did it truly stump you?

Ken Jennings Answer: I always did my own taxes. I could have thought about that question for 30 minutes, not just 30 seconds, and still blanked it.

Constructive note to all the people who like to come up to me on the street and tell me how "easy" that one was and "even they" knew it: go to hell.

I can't imagine how loving irritating that would be.

I haven't been able to watch in a few weeks, but I recently saw a promo for a talk show interview with a Jeopardy contestant who was supposedly treated unfairly or lost due to a technicality or something. Does anybody know the deal with that story, or where I could find more information? I think I saw the promo around December 18 or so.

I tried Googling to see if I could find anything for you, but unfortunately searches looking for people losing jeopardy based on a technicality are very much law based and not TV show based.

This was Wheel of Fortune where the puzzle answer was Seven Swans a Swimming but the woman, being from the south, said swimmin' and was not awarded $3800. She went on to lose the game by $3200.

I think you're thinking of the Wheel of Fortune contestant who wasn't awarded with solving the puzzle in one round because she pronounced a word as "swimmin'" instead of "swimming".

Thoreau came to mind first, but I decided it sounds something way more Twain-esque, and changed my answer before it was revealed.

Thoreau died about 20 years before, so it was a smart move. Also, yeah, what gave it away for me was the humble-brag of "everybody drinks water." That was 100% Mark Twain.

KilGrey posted:

I'd like to think I'd behave with a modicum of respect, but considering that when none of the three candidates know something I know, I spend the time flipping off the TV and screaming "It's King Lear you idiot, moron cocksuckers! You suck cocks is what!" I don't know if I'd be able to hold it in. Even when whomever I'm watching with shouts the answer before me, I always let out a frustrated "noooo!" I've never seen someone on Jeopardy actually do that.

We'd come back from the first commercial break and I would clearly have been replaced by someone who looks nothing like me. My name would just be struck through and like "Andy" or whatever would be written above it.

If there's a tie, do both move on to the next episode? Does one of the people they originally cast for the next episode get the shaft in that case? That's kinda lovely if it's the case.

In the event of a tie, both competitors return. I think there's been at least one three way tie in Jeopardy history. And the other guy would still get on, he'd just have to wait an additional episode. It's not like he'd be permanently bumped off the queue.

Pay attention to current events in January, they always throw a couple of those questions into the online test. If you have any areas where you are sketchy but it isn't that hard to learn the major touchstones, like opera, then there are probably good lists out there that can be studied.
