Another Mario game?!! Don't panic.

What if Mario was, space, man? TWICE??!! Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) was a follow-up to the hit Wii title Super Mario Galaxy: The Phantom Menace (2007, re-released in 3D and IMAX in 2012). Nintendo broke the recent Mario formula a bit and released a direct sequel, not changing a whole lot in terms of the aesthetic SMG1 was based on.

But that doesn't mean they couldn't make it better! SMG2 builds on and improves upon what made SMG1 pretty solid, and the result is one of the most fun platforming games I've ever played, and definitely the most fun (for me) in the modern era. It's a no-nonsense, let's-have-some-goddamn-fun kinda game, and I love it for it. So this post will follow suit and cut to the chase - take a look and join me on a fairytale journey of collecting a bunch of stars because that's basically what Mario does now. Oh and Bowser kidnapped Peach space (video 1 spoilers).

This'll be a pretty relaxed and chill, but comprehensive playthrough of the game and the goal is to get everything down to the last star. And as a quick disclaimer, this won't be the pro-est venture through this game...

I'll use the rotating guests model to share the Galaxy 2 experience to the best of my abilities.

Challenge Videos!

...plays through Fluffy Bluff Galaxy without ever becoming fluffy or bluff!
...doesn't eat any of the Tall Trunk's fruit and Courts the Clouds without a cloud!
...refuses to touch yellow things!
...starts becoming a legend!
...better understands the Koopas!
...apparently hates himself!

I don't know how to categorize this!

Rolling into Hell

Arguably the best 3D platformer and definitely the best 3D Mario game. Going to be following this so hard.

May 6, 2006

Glad to see this finally get posted. Haven't played much of Galaxy 2 even through I have a copy, but from what I seen, the game is amazing.

I think there are a bunch of people who can create trailing images. I know some who could do this as if they were just going out for a stroll.

Nice to see this getting started! This is a fantastic game and I hope everyone who hasn't played it yet will do so after seeing this LP.

Jan 28, 2009

Good to see this officially get started. I saw the first video in the Sandcastle and really enjoyed the chill style of commentary. Looking forward to more.

Jan 14, 2010

There's a super special, super popular thing called spaghetti that I want to try!

Lipstick Apathy

Oh man, finally gonna get to see what certain parts of the game are all about, since I didn't end up getting that far.

Glad to see you finally got to start something you've wanted to do for a while now, Diabetus.

Oct 22, 2010

Hehehe... Everything's going according to plan, right?

I never got to play Galaxy 2, but I remember the first Galaxy being fun. I'm definitely looking forward to this. Good luck on the LP.

I loved Galaxy 1, but I never got around to getting the second game so I'll definitely be following this to completion.

stay the same never change

This should be a good thread! I would abandon any RPer ternt LPer apprehension (mentioned in a retsutalk maybe) since you're doing a great job so far.

I only played, and never finished, the first Mario Galaxy. I've always heard 2 was nothing but an improvement but I had a hard time believing it. I feel like I've seen so many Mario platformer sequels sort of be total rehashes of the first game, so I am looking forward to seeing what I have been missing

Oct 26, 2007

I haven't played any Mario games after the SNES installment, so Galaxy 1 & 2 are foreign concepts to me I might be missing out on the rich, deep, involved backstory of the Mario world by skipping Galaxy 1, but I'll be tagging along! Glad to see this out of the Sandcastle.

Man, I really need to go back and finish this game.

I like to think that Luma's dialogue is a reference to Geno.

Like it or not, we will build you a new civilization.

Well, getting that first star seemed a lot more epic than in Mario 64, didn't it?

This game looks crazy and fun, I'm definitely going to follow that. Good to see this thread finally going!

My urges are becoming...

Oh boy my favorite platforming game ever! Are you going to do a star per video or will you expand your time limit past the first video?

I'm aiming for around 20 minutes per video, so probably anywhere from 1-3 stars per.

It's a complete improvement over Galaxy 1, which is a bummer because it didn't sell nearly as well. I can barely remember anything about the first game since this one to me just overshadows it so much.

The Galaxy is an illusion. The Plumber doubly so.

Jun 16, 2009

That's kind of a weird thought isn't it?

Glad to see this thread posted, been playing through the game myself and it's so drat good. Looking forward to more!

Fun Shoe

I will say, I'm a bit disappointed at Spaceship Mario being an extremely weak hub world compared to some of the ones came before it, with pretty much nothing to do except go to levels. There wasn't any sense of exploration or progress, just a giant map screen.

But the rest of the game? Love it. All of the new stuff they added, pretty much all of the worlds. I didn't think that I would like the 2D platforming segments, but they work well and are integrated extremely well. I think that yeah, "streamline", would be the best way to describe what they did to Galaxy 1. Took the existing game, took out what was bad, put in more fun things, and then build more around it.

Aug 23, 2012

I absolutely adore this game, can't wait for more.

Sep 6, 2010

Oh man, time to fire up another file to play along! I absolutely love this game, and pretty much everything it does.

Oct 18, 2012

It's a Dirt Devil!
Get it?

Aw man, I only borrowed the game and had to return it before I could finish it. I really have to buy it for good now; I want to finish it before the LP ends.

Now that I think about it, Mario being so close to not only one, but multiple black holes should have sped up time so excessively that Peach is long gone.

Jun 10, 2012

The Nonagram loves you, truly.

Galaxy 2 is pretty much my favourite game of all time. I've played it somewhere in the realm of 30+ times and it still never gets boring for me. Needless to say, I'll be following this thread intently!

Looks pretty great, can't wait for more. Are you going to show off the multiplayer of this game at all? The description looks interesting, but I have no idea if it actually works in practice.

Mario galaxy? Pff, more like... actually this game looks like a lot of fun.

A Diabetus LP? Just what I wanted for Christmas!

Glad to see you still have a great sense of humor Diabetus. Appreciate you showing off this game because just like you said it's one of the best 3D platformers (the best?) but it didn't seem to get as much attention as the original Super Mario Galaxy. It's a game that's just fun to play and I think you do a good job getting that across.

One thing that really impressed me about both games was how the art and setting was handled, especially in this game. The environments are diverse and even cheesy things like Mario's space/face-ship are memorable. Plus everything's so colorful! It's a nice game to watch.

And fanart already, of one of the best lines in the video. Nice one, ShimilleM.

Looking forward to seeing how things go from here!

Jun 30, 2005

I got this for a Ratatta on GTS.

I haven't played this game in such a long time, definitely following the LP...

Nov 7, 2011

Galaxy 2 is easily my favourite 3D Mario. I love how it expanded on the first game - it doesn't just feel like a new set of levels, mechanically it's been expanded on and it all comes together to make something incredible.

Will definitely follow this LP.

Feb 5, 2010

Sounds like you've just committed to doing every single star.

Are you ill?

Jan 9, 2010

I'm digging the music a lot. This should be a good LP.

Aw man, a Diabetus LP of a Mario game?!

Just the thing I needed before my night shift, thanks Betus! Already enjoying your laid-back style for such a beautiful game. So glad to see more people bring more attention to this amazing sequel.
