Another Mario game?!! Don't panic.

What if Mario was, like...in space, man? TWICE??!! Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) was a follow-up to the hit Wii title Super Mario Galaxy: The Phantom Menace (2007, re-released in 3D and IMAX in 2012). Nintendo broke the recent Mario formula a bit and released a direct sequel, not changing a whole lot in terms of the aesthetic SMG1 was based on.

But that doesn't mean they couldn't make it better! SMG2 builds on and improves upon what made SMG1 pretty solid, and the result is one of the most fun platforming games I've ever played, and definitely the most fun (for me) in the modern era. It's a no-nonsense, let's-have-some-goddamn-fun kinda game, and I love it for it. So this post will follow suit and cut to the chase - take a look and join me on a fairytale journey of collecting a bunch of stars because that's basically what Mario does now. Oh and Bowser kidnapped Peach FYI...in space (video 1 spoilers).

I only played, and never finished, the first Mario Galaxy. I've always heard 2 was nothing but an improvement but I had a hard time believing it. I feel like I've seen so many Mario platformer sequels sort of be total rehashes of the first game, so I am looking forward to seeing what I have been missing

It's a complete improvement over Galaxy 1, which is a bummer because it didn't sell nearly as well. I can barely remember anything about the first game since this one to me just overshadows it so much.

Also re: hub world vs. toll-bridge maps - Galaxy 2's format never bugged me despite being restricted to a galaxy or two at a time. Each environment and star fetch quest is so unique that I always got excited about what was coming next and never felt like being deprived of path choices in a platforming game like this was really that much of a downside. I just wanted to do them all!!! And you'd get to them all in due time.

I'll post Part II either tonight or early tomorrow since the first video is the same thing I posted in the Sandcastle awhile back and that'd get some new content going. From there it'll probably be every few days or weekly for updates, depending on how long it takes me to record new footage and get people willing to talk to me for 20 minute increments.

Yeah, it's part my own compulsive need to get everything and part wanting to make sure anyone watching has enough time to take in the flora and fauna. I spent a good chunk of time doing ridiculous long jumps, cannon shots, and falling from high places in Mario 64 to try and land on the stars from improbable places. So trying and failing to stylishly get stars is ingrained in me forever :shobon:

It just boils down to your tastes and what you expect/want more out of a Mario game (or just games period), exploration or platforming or some combo of both. I'm more of a jump through and react to crazy poo poo type of fella and in general I kinda prefer linearity in my games because I'm boring as hell and don't enjoy meandering too much.

I got two videos ready to talk over that'll round out World 3, but I don't think I'll get time to do the talking over them thing and get 'em up before I leave town for a few days on Thursday (PAX East!). I'll try to find relevant Mario things to comment on while I'm up there.

In the meantime, quick informal poll. Do you guys prefer the rotating guests deal that I had early on or do you prefer the more consistent thing where beef's in a bunch of consecutive videos, or the old Metroid Prime model with a consistent person and a rotating person (like the consistent beef and random appearance of Blister in the last video but possibly with more sane people also)?

In general I'm trying to play like the designers intended and leaving sequence breaking type stuff to ArgonMatrix (or anybody else who wants to show off shortcuts/workarounds).

My main issue is that every other time we've seen a power-up the game's done a good job at making it pretty easy to get a star while you're getting familiar with how the power-ups work, and then making it more challenging at a later galaxy. Here that's not really the case and the lack of precision for me just makes it not all that fun to play with compared to other power-ups. Even if you gently caress up with the red pepper which takes a lot of control away from you, you can blame it on slow reflexes/not paying enough attention but with the spring it's just a pain to even move around. More like a power-DOWN!!!
