Operators were unsure what to do about the fire. First, they tried to blow the flames out by putting the fans onto full power and increasing the cooling, but this fanned the flames. Tom Hughes and his colleague had already created a fire break by ejecting some undamaged fuel cartridges from around the blaze and Tom Tuohy suggested trying to eject some from the heart of the fire, by bludgeoning the melted cartridges through the reactor and into the cooling pond behind it with scaffolding poles. Same thing with the stories I've heard from my friends who were in Afghanistan and worked with the ANA. The ANA would gently caress off at the slightest rumours of Taliban in the area. And they would sell the gasoline for their vehicles. So half the time they called them up to coordinate patrols, the ANAs would be out of gasoline and begging for more.

The traditionally neutral Swiss army has staged an unplanned invasion after troops blundered into Liechtenstein. A 171-strong Swiss company got two kilometres into its neighbour before realising the mistake and heading back. Liechtenstein authorities made light of the intrusion, saying they only knew about it when the Swiss told them.

The company commander led his men in the wrong direction in bad weather but gave the immediate order to return when realising the error. "It was all so dark," one soldier told the Swiss newspaper Blick.

A spokesman for the Liechtenstein authorities said: "It's not like they invaded with attack helicopters."
