I like how confused the Russians were about Khat.

"Seamen said this piece of rope pirates were using as narcotic. Is it made from hemp?"

Also, like half of the comments are people whining about weed legalization.

I don't know how many UK milgoons are kicking around, but this documentary takes a look at a training area in the UK that recreates an Afghan village it's actually pretty well shot, and somewhat informative.

I know the UK has a replica German village somewhere from the cold war days, so it's cool to see that they're keeping up with the times.

- A Lance Corporal who thinks 5.56 is designed to wound and 7.62 kills
- Real life amputees as roleplayers (this one is actually pretty cool)
- Salty NCOs talking about Kosovo

Found a pretty good video from Afghanistan, as well as an AAR from one of the guys who was there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaC-w2dIxZc

quote:

1- grenades, use lots of grenades, between the 4 of us we had 1 grenade left at the end of the fight
2- we generally carried 10 mags- rule of thumb for my guys was 6 mags to pick a fight, and 4 to get you out, meaning that was a transitional point for us if we had no immediate resup, at the end of that fight we had 2 ish mags each and last drum on C-9
3- M-72's arm effectively at 25m, which is the range that fight started at, then it got close- the M-72 is the 'Canadian RPG', timmie hates them, it penetrated a wall that was about a foot thick and had a great cone' effect on the far side
4-all of the drills worked-practice whatever drills your using alot, gunfighter program is awesome
5- ambush drill can/should be on call, once suppresion is achieved- no use rushing until then
6- soft soil is good- the RPG round went in deep before going off
7- yelling 'hey you' should not be used to initiate contact....

What kind of casualties would that convoy take? I saw a lot of soft-skinned vehicles, so right off the bat that's a few casualties. I expect that the rebels would have moved to assault immediately after, or at least fired on the convoy. Since they were filming the wreckage, they obviously secured the site, which leads me to think that the Syrian army was unwilling or unable to counterattack.

Brown Moses, do you have any pictures or videos showing how damaged World Heritage Sites in Syria have been by the fighting?
It came up in a lecture that UNESCO considers all 6 sites in Syria to have been damaged by fighting, encampment or looting.

Not all chemical agents are blistering agents, there are blood, choking and nerve agents that are much, much worse.

Being hit with nerve gas wouldn't leave burns, but it would kill you just as well (actually better)

Are blistering agents the easiest to make? I'm basing this off nothing but nerve agents sounds difficult to use and make.

Yes. They're the oldest and the simplest and there are larger stockpiles of them around the world. Nerve gas is complicated, and even if you side has good CBRN training and equipment (which I doubt the Syrians do) it's still dangerous to use on the frontline.

Keep in mind that by the Somme, the allies knew about creeping barrages and fire and movement, they just didn't think newly arrived volunteers would be able to manage. The professional soldiers of the BEF had been killed off the year before, so new tactics had to be devised for Kitchener Volunteers. Things that seem stupid and careless now like Pals Battalions were supposed to be more humane, and good for morale. The generals in the first world war may have been unprepared for modern warfare, but for the most part they did care about their men, and were horrified by the high bodycounts.
