Navy's too pussy to put a modern DDG through anything resembling a realistic shock event; too many lives and too much money at stake. Kinda defeats the purpose of shock trials, but at least you can catch low-hanging fruit, I guess, and validate calculations used for barge testing equipment. Footage from when they close-harbor blasted the gently caress out of USS Osprey (first of a then-new class of minesweepers) in 1995 is pretty impressive, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plAAuk9VwLs grover fucked around with this message at 17:10 on Dec 23, 2012 |

Veins McGee posted:LHD/LHAs can operate as a lovely version of a carrier. The Navy tested the concept in the 70s but that's about the extent of it. The 'Sea Control Ship concept' is one of the extremely tertiary arguments for SVTOL F-35s. This is a bit dated, but still a good visual comparison: ![]() This is USS Theodore Roosevelt operating with France's Charles de Gaulle, the next most capable aircraft carrier in the world after US CVNs, and the only other nuclear carrier. It's actually smaller than LHA/LHD, less than half the displacement of a US CVN, but as it's designed to be a dedicated aircraft carrier vs gator freighter, can operate more fixed wing aircraft than an LHA/LHD, though still far less than a CVN. It's got some other serious issues that limit effectiveness in the power projection role that I don't think were ever entirely corrected. ![]() LHD between two CVNs: ![]() grover fucked around with this message at 15:44 on Dec 30, 2012 |

front wing flexing posted:Have a picture of the USS Blueridge taken from a PLAN Jiangwei. Got a very, and oddly thorough tour of it. It was spotless and an elisted dude we talked to said they cleaned and painted for a month straight in preparation. Despite the immaculate appearance you could tell it was a sub-par ship. There was linoleum everywhere on the bridge and CIC. And there was startlingly few fire hoses and the ones we saw were no longer than eight feet. There were also not as many QAWTDs as you would think for a combat ship. How did it appear technology-wise? Lots of computers like on US warship? Do you have any more pictures? Phanatic posted:Like I said the last time this got posted: ![]() Puts out about 3 million amps. It's the current that creates the magnetic field, so the more current, the more powerful the weapon. A production railgun will require about 16MW to continuously fire at a rate of 6 shots per minute. Less power (like in a Burke) wouldn't mean it couldn't fire a railgun, just that it would operate at a lower firing rate. ![]() grover fucked around with this message at 02:56 on Jan 18, 2013 |

I'll go dig up the latest on combat lasers and the XM-29 and post a future weapons thread; it's been a while since the last one anyhow. While you're waiting, enjoy this photo of an Il-76 packing a giant loving laser. No, it's not a cold-war relic, it's an ongoing project the Russians successfully tested in 2009 and are still moving forward, with new testing of the upgraded system planned this year. ![]() grover fucked around with this message at 16:41 on Jan 18, 2013 |

Christoff posted:Can someone sum up this whole Syrian conflict in a couple sentences in a non-GBS way? Whose side are we on again? I thought at first it was like "yeah, rebel! You're oppressed!" But? Arab spring hits Syria, Syrian dictator (Assad) responds with brutal crackdown, and a bloody civil war ensues with many atrocities committed. The opposition has been on the receiving side of most of the atrocities, and Assad is almost universally considered the bad guy. US is firmly on the side of the Syrian opposition, and formally recognized the Syrian Opposition Council as the legitimate government of Syria, and has provided a lot of non-military aid to help stem the humanitarian crisis. Russia has a base in Syria and a vested interest in Assad not falling and hasn't let the UN do much, either. Add to this that a significant chunk of the opposition are muslim extremists, and US has gone as far to label some of the opposition as terrorists, and it gets really murky. TLDR: it's OK to cheer for the opposition. grover fucked around with this message at 20:15 on Feb 17, 2013 |
