I was just saying the same thing to someone on Twitter, they both seem to have a whiff of the DIY about them. I've been looking through Soviet/Russian arms catalogs and not been able to find a match for either of them so far.

I'll ask around to see if anyone has a subtitled version. Meanwhile, I've been cataloging hundreds of videos of cluster bombs in Syria, and these two videos are my picks for best and worst cluster bomb videos (that aren't horribly gory)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXxUnzximuY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7hU6lI3Poc

The worst video, which I won't post here, shows a motorcycle that was hit by a bomblet, the rider of which was decapitated in such a way that it degloved the skin on his neck, left his head in one piece, and resulted in what looked like a macabre sockpuppet being held up to the camera.

What kind of rocket attack was that? It seemed to be subsonic and I saw like 2 frames of something rocket-looking at a 45 degree or so angle. Some Katyusha variant?

BM-21 Grad seems the most likely, they've been using them a lot recently, even with cluster munitions, which civilians keep picking up and end up getting killed by.

Speaking of Syria, and Syria being blown to poo poo, a new bomb has been sighted in the Homs region, and I'm buggered if I can figure out what it is, hoping some of you might have a clue. Here's one of the clearer examples of it being used

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HItSz8JhpU

There's more videos of them being used here, and from what I can tell they have parachutes, are dropped in groups of 4-6, and appear to have time delayed fuzes.

I've been tracking the arms used in Syria for months, and I've put together this post with the weapons commonly used by the air force, supported with UXO evidence, and this doesn't seem to match any of the ones used so far.

Meanwhile, here's some examples of Syrian DIY rockets not working quite as they should

Thanks, I'll take a look at that. I'm hoping some UXO will turn up eventually and make life easier for me.

Another thing that's interesting about that video is how low they are flying, which suggests they don't believe there's the MANPADS threat in the Homs region they face in other parts of the country.

Thanks, here's another mysterious explosion from Syria. Last week there was an attack on Aleppo University, in a government controlled area. Two large explosions, with the opposition claiming it was a government jet or rockets, and the government claiming variously it was car bomb or rebel rockets/missiles. This new video of the event appears to show it was a rocket or missile rather than a car bomb, but it's still unclear what sort of size of munition could cause the shown explosion, so it's still unclear if it was a jet, or surface to surface missile

Hey Brown Moses have you seen any evidence in ordnance debris that would support the claim that the Syrians have already used chemical weapons? How does a crumpled chemical munition differ in appearance from a conventional round? I tried googling for clues but unfired munitions look awfully like every other round, and considering how this war has gone I'd half expect to see 80-gallon drums with Mr Yuk on the side chucked out of helicopters.

None I've seen, and as you say it's hard to know if they did. If I did find UXO evidence of chemical weapons I'd probably organise a parade in my honour to let everyone know I found it first.

Here's a great video from Syria showing a bomb release

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X96x1q0hhK0

Videos like these actually represent a shift in the conflict. Earlier on in the conflict jets never released flares, and then as the opposition captured more air defence bases and released videos of themselves wielding MANPADS more and more videos showed jets releasing flares as they dropped their bombs.

Ima be so mad if that vid is old news to 'Moses!!!!!

Seriously though Idk if you'd answered it before but is what you do just a hobby or what? Just curious :shobon:

I saw it last night just as I was heading to bed, I was going to look around for the original version to see if it was in HD.

I started the blog as a hobby, just to write up stuff I was seeing online for future reference in internet arguments, and at first just focusing on the UK phone hacking scandal with a bit of Syria stuff. Then I discovered 100's of Youtube channels from Syria with all sorts of footage like that, and ended up reviewing each one everyday. Currently I've got about 500 channels listed.

What happened then is I started to spot stuff that was overlooked in the mainstream media, probably because journalists don't have all day to go OCD over Youtube videos, but so that led to me being the first person to write about various aspects of the conflict, such as the first use of a variety of weapons, including cluster bombs, incendiary bombs, and grad cluster rockets; executions performed by the opposition, and very recently evidence of weapons being smuggled to the opposition in vast quantities.

That's led to me making lots of contacts with journalists, researcher, human rights activists, etc, which has in turn led to me being interviewed and featured in a variety of media outlets (some of which are listed here), including the New York Times, NPR, France 24, CNN, Christian Science Monitor, Wired, and other titles. I've also written a couple of articles for Foreign Policy Magazine's website on the weapons used by the Syrian opposition.

Currently I'm doing a bit of part time consultancy work for Human Rights Watch, gathering video evidence of cluster bomb use in Syria (around 400 videos so far), and cataloging them, as well as helping UNMAS out with their UXO education project in Syria. I've also got one (and maybe more) pieces lined up with the New York Times' At War blog, a series of interviews for ITN's new online news section where I'll be talking about the weapons used in Syria, and a few other things on the go.

So in summary I accidentally became a world authority on the weapons used in the Syrian conflict.

If you're open to some constructive criticism, I'd suggest using less "I think", instead opting for "it seems", "I believe" or anything along the lines of "reports/videos/images/this seem(s) to be indicating", etc. to infuse your opinion with a little more air of credibility and, at the very least, confidence. In a world where a solid majority of "experts" and pundits wouldn't know an expert opinion if it came to their house and violated them, I'd say it wouldn't bee too outlandish if you sold yourself at market value.
You seem to have earned the journalistic bragging rights, so why not?
