I am only a year and a half away from getting my 4 year degree as a Networking specalist (Going both Cisco and Microsoft) and you guys are kinda scaring me. :ohdear:

Oh well at least School is basically paying me to learn this stuff. I actually have a minimester class this winter on computer hardware and the rest of my time is going to be learning actual Cisco routing and Microsoft stuff.

Obvious Edit: I'm an idiot

I am taking online Networking classes right now and I want to shoot myself. Is there a much better way of explaining the OSI Model than Testout explains it? Theirs is way too confusing to grasp and I think I need extra tutoring on this subject. :(

E - vvv That is a little better. Thanks for pointing me to that video!

Agreed on Professor Messer, but just wanted to chime in to let you know that it is a pain for a lot of people, especially early on. Lots of books and trainings don't describe it in ways that make it easy to grasp.

I had a chat with my online instructor at school yesterday and he somewhat made it easier for me to understand. But basically he told me the same thing.

:eng101: "KD it's just a hoop you are going to jump through. Everyone has to learn it. Meet one of my Cisco students"!

:smug: "Sup"?

:( : Can you tell me about the OSI Layer model?

:smug: ...What?

:eng101: "See"?

Well ok it did not go exactly like that. But basically the Cisco student said he knew and understood the OSI Model, but it's not something I am going to be needing down the road. But I do have to understand and learn it.

The good news is the next two chapters after that I am breezing right through it. It's not that bad.

So I withdrew from my computer networking class (CIST 1401). I decided that the summer semester for actually being able to learn the fundamentals for networking in a period of 10 weeks is a little bit too much. The good news is that my tuition is being carried over, and my license for Testout is good for another 17 months, so I have plenty of time to actually study without having to worry about deadlines. But gently caress taking summer semesters. I dont think I am ever doing that ever again.

Now for my hardware class? It's not only fun but easy, and once I am done I will be eligible to get my A+ certification. Im breezing through that class like its nothing.

E- And gently caress taking online classes. So easy to procrastinate.

So I talked with several people. And feel free to break my heart:

My main goal right now is getting the A+ certs to hopefully nail a better job. But my main goal is to also get the N+ and S+. Is it true that having that trifecta has a chance to nail you a job than not having it in the first place? I play with some people online and they tell me that I will basically wipe my rear end with those certifications. And according to my College, we were deemed one of the top 5 in the USA for young IT professional jobs. (I live in Columbus GA. My School is Columbus Tech)

I am getting mixed signals here. So what is up? What should I continue to get after college?

Well what about one of my dreams? Starting my own PC repair business? I know I am going into college to get my degree as a Networking specialist but at least doing my business would be well enough more than what I am doing now.

Computers are my passion, and with me working at Disney for over two years. I know how to deal with people face to face.

E- Might as well admit now. I have a real bad stutter

Yeah I am hella happy. My final for school was basically a lab from testout as well as a live lab that I had to be watched. The live lab was troubleshooting what was wrong with a computer at the school and I got the trifecta of problems. Bad RAM, Bad Power Supply, and a bad graphics card.

A+ certification test I took soon after and it wasn't bad at all. Highly recommend Testout as well as the official A+ books you can buy off of Amazon for like 20 bucks or whatever.

Feeling really good :)

This semester in college is a little rough on me. The intro to networking is rough and it's sucking the life out of me on my off days. I loved Testout when I was learning to get my A+ but I am using the same program to just the intro to networking and it sucks so hard.

E- To be fair I only bombed one test and my instructor has given our class full permission to only use written notes during the tests. Hell the last two tests I did today I feel I didn't do too bad on them; an 88 theory and a 100 on the lab simulator.

Testout has come out with version 5 for their networking courses: http://www.testout.com/lp/network-pro-5

Have not really noticed much but I did see that they removed unnecessary information regarding network signaling, SCADA systems, some assessments from network policies :argh:.

But the labs load up a lot faster and are more stable than it has been. So that is a plus!

It’s strangely expensive, but the site networklessons.com does a good job of explaining networking technologies that you maybe haven’t had experience with.

I went ahead and dumped 1 dollar and so far he is good at explaining things to me. Testout can sometimes be a little off so this is a welcome different point of view. I appreciate it!

My instructor also pointed me to Danscourses so I need to check him out as well.

I really like his diagramming actual actual router and switch command output. Most courses skip showing what each field means. Like I can run some commands and pick out the bit of data that I've been trained to look for, but it's good to know what all of the stuff means. He's also really good at showing the configs for each example. Now if it was only $20 a month instead of $40.

I live in the USA and for me it's 29 dollars a month.

Hello again thread.

My college career is close to ending soon and my networking class is all sorts of fun. So I figured I would express where I am in my CCNA class. I cross study between my tech school and netacad. Finals are coming up and it's pretty much something like this:

Basically what we know about Vlans, Trunking, ACLs, configuring a router and two different models of switches. So in something like packet tracer it looks a lot like this:

It's a very weird topology but all of the Vlans can communicate with each other as well as the different PC's having different privileges to access certain other Vlans on the network through ACLs.

Funny thing is I was confused how certain PCs were able to communicate and I just realized my gateways on Router 2 and 3 needed to be on the xx.xx.xx.2 and 3 gateway in order for the ACL to properly work. Figuring that out made me feel so much better about learning this poo poo.
