I've been drudging through the Official Cert Guide 640-554 for CCNA Security and watching the new CBT Nuggets 640-554 videos. I thought about buying the INE videos, but still hesitant. The free CCNA R&S INE videos they have were ok but just a tad dry for my taste.

I finally sat for CCNA R&S last Monday. I really should have done that like 10 years ago instead of ignoring it. Hoping to finish plowing through CCNAS quickly so I can move on to CCNP Security.

I like watching CBT Nuggets and other videos before I tackle the chapters of a book just because I get a little more familiar with the content before pressing into the details. It gives me sort of a oh this was what he was talking about feeling.

It's actually working very well for me for CCNA Security since Keith Barker is a co-author of the book and he did the CBT Nugget videos. It is pretty much like a video preview of the next topic.

Woop, just passed CCNA Security an hour ago. Was much easier than I expected.

Anyone have a recomendation on study materials for CCNP Secure? It looks like the Official Cert book is downright horrible according to all the reviews I see of it. I don't even see any other books on the topic. I already plan on picking up the CBT Nuggets, but I wanted something else.

I have a Safari subscription so I'll probably just read it on there. I usually like buying at least one textbook to fondle inappropriately though. :(

I just got the monthly subscription to INE a couple days ago. $99 hurts right now with my first little one on the way in a few months but I really dig it. The CBT Nuggets for the CCNP Security SECURE weren't very good for me but the INE videos are a little easier to keep with.

642-637 (CCNP Security SECURE) in the books today. Yay.

Getting through the cisco press book was harder than the actual exam was. I watched the CBT Nuggets (which were boring) and finally got an all access pass to INE and watched their videos which were a bit better suited to me.

Happy to have that one down. On to FIREWALL. At least the material looks a bit better for me.

Glad to hear that SECURE sticks to the same "never use the Cisco Press book" stance that FIREWALL did, I'm going to have to take that in the near future. Protip for FIREWALL: you're going to be shocked at how heavily the test emphasizes ASDM over CLI. Be sure to get hands-on with ASDM a bit just so you know what is where.

I found that out last night. We use ASDM a lot (ugh) where I work so I was actually looking forward to digging into the command line a bit. Then watching the first INE video of "it will be heavily ASDM based" crushed my dreams.

cisco press had some buy 3 get 40% off sale so I bit the bullet and bought Firewall, VPN and IPS books. Probably going to regret it but oh well. I have a safraibooks subscription too so I should know better... argh.

Woo. 642-618 FIREWALL is down. Studied for two weeks -- at least 5 hours a day. I work with ASAs but still thought I would barely pass but I almost got a perfect score.

I know people recommend to do VPN after Firewall, I'm going to do the IPS exam next before I leave for the paid family leave stuff at work when my son is born. This way I'll get some solid time in front of real sensors and not have to rent a rack or anything just to do some labs for it.

only IPS and VPN left. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Fortunately there's ridiculous amounts of downtime at work where I put in most of my studying.

Just going to have to man up and do CCNP ROUTE finally. Hopefully I can knock that out side by side with this VCP thing.

There isn't really any ASA on CCNA Security outside of a couple over very high level firewall concepts. It was mostly using that stupid CCP interface on IOS devices. You don't really touch any ASA until CCNP Firewall (2.0) and it's like 70% ASDM and 30% CLI. I'd go for CCNA Security - I thought that was a lot easier than CCNA R&S.

Let us know how IPS looks; I have to choose between that and VPN next, and we don't use IPS modules on ASAs at all where I work, so it's going to be a bear to study for.

I passed IPS (642-627) a couple days ago. The test wasn't bad at all. I'm pretty sure anyone that can understand English could pass the simulation.

The only thing I think I didn't do well one was the stupid little stuff I didn't even think to memorize. (e.g. knowing the capabilities of specific models of IPS devices - something any sane person would just say hold on a second and let me look it up in 2 seconds.)

I didn't realize almost every freaking CCNP Security level exam gives one of those "specialist" titles.

SECURE gives Cisco IOS Security Specialist
FIREWALL gives Cisco Firewall Specialist
IPS gives Cisco IPS Specialist
and apparently if you pass FIREWALL and VPN you get Cisco ASA Specialist. And they expire every 2 years (not renewed with taking any CCNP/CCIE exam, you have to take that specific exam) so needless to say I'm not renewing those.

I only have VPN left for my CCNP Security. I got my first baby on the way at the beginning of next month so I'm going balls to the wall, but I think the baby is going to win.

I got my CCNA Security (and then CCNP Security) pretty quickly. I think CCNA Security was probably the easiest exam I've taken out of all of it. If you want to get something done quick I'd say hit CCNA Security before the CISSP. Keith Barker's videos on CBT Nuggets and the official book (that he wrote too) were probably the best CBT Nuggets I've seen next to Jeremy Ciorra's CCNA R&S nuggets.

Just got my Stanley email about the vSphere course. I'm planning to enroll, can someone give me a brief idea of what the course entails, how it works, class times etc etc??

It's work at your own pace. There's three or so super easy quizzes that they allow you to take multiple times. There's a bunch of labs you have to work through in order to get credit for completing the class. You follow along with the PDFs and they're almost impossible to screw up. There are some video lectures but they're absolutely horrible. Don't buy the materials for the class because those books are completely useless.

You won't come remotely close to passing the VCP if you just rely on this class, but it's a super easy way to get that VMWare class checkbox. All of the labs probably took under 2 hours total to complete.

edit: the only thing is they don't open up all the quizes/lectures at once so you have to go back and do them every couple of weeks. All the labs can be done in the beginning though.
