Wow, thanks for this thread. Recently bought a TDI and this thread has already taught me a bit about diesels.

Well at least the 2010 was still the "good" jetta. Now if you were driving say a "new" jetta that might be a good idea. But living in Texas, it's probably easier to just ask someone to help you move big poo poo :)

Hmm... Is there something wrong with the new Jettas? I sure hope not, 'cause I just bought a 2013 Jetta TDI in October. I love it so far, although I already have to replace my windshield and maybe have my hood re-painted (scratched the clearcoat, though I'm not sure if it scratched down to the metal) since a rock fell out of the back of a big-rig (Shitload of road contruction on CA-132). :(

Well, if you weren't familiar with the older jetta, the new ones went back to the lovely trailing arm suspension, lost all the nice soft touch interior for lovely GM quality hard plastics. Basically they went down market as far as luxury goes so that they could hit that 17k starting point to compete with poo poo like Kia and Hyundai. Unless the TDI models get better stuff.

Oh, okay. I was a bit worried it was something reliability wise that might have been a problem. I'm inclined to agree about the interior. I sprung for the premium package so that I could get the Fender Audio system and while it sounds nice, it does cause the door panels to vibrate at higher volumes. I'm hoping some Dynamat will help fix that.

I've noticed a few of you talking about MT TDI's. I had a hell of a time finding a dealership that had any in stock and when they did, unfortunately, none were offered with any premium features. I was looking forward to having a manual again after my last car, but the DSG sure seems a lot nicer than the AT that was in my older 3.2TL Type-S. Since I'm currently commuting about 123Mi a day, I really wanted a descent Stereo and at least some luxuries.

The reason is because on the A4 body style the AT is practically a wear item.

Now on the newer body styles the "AT" is the DSG gearbox, and as other people have said it's robust and fun. Especially with flappy paddles. The only drawback I can think of is the $300 fluid replacement every 40k miles, but in the grand scheme of things I don't think it's a bad deal.

I'm not really much of a car guy, so I didn't really know much about DSG when I went in to look at the TDI's (I originally went in to look at a MT version, but went with my current car for the upgraded Stereo). I just figured they only put DSG in the sports type of cars (Like a GTI or something) and only knew about the 'flappy paddle' type. When the salesman suggested the DSG/Tiptronic option, I was a bit hesitant since the car I was trading in was an Auto w/ Tiptronic and that thing had quite a delay when shifting ('03 Acura 3.2TL Type-S). After driving though, I was quite impressed.

I'll take having to shell out $300. every 40k miles over having to have my Transmission rebuilt every ~30k-ish miles like on the Acura*.

*Long story short: Made it to 100k miles before the transmission poo poo the bed. Took it into a transmission specialist, had them rebuild it. About 30k miles later, it goes out again. They rebuilt it again, this time under warranty, but was still out money for the rental car while it was being worked on. It was coming up to 160k miles when I traded it in and it was already beginning to exhibit behavior of a bad gear or two.

^^^
It was nice & warm last week. I've been getting the best mileage I've ever gotten. Most of Winter, I've averaged about 48MPG (not bad for a car rated for 42MPG) but yesterday I was set to average 53MPG. Unfortunately, due to some construction there was traffic, so I ended up with 52.4MPG. So much better than the 30MPG I could average under the best of conditions in my previous car.

My last 4 vw's have been manual and I've never had to rebuild any of them. Sounds like you just got a bad mechanic.

I think maybe I mis-stated something. The car that was having transmission issues was my Acura and it was an Automatic. My VW has been running like a champ (As it should be since it's brand new).

I seem to be having bad luck these last 2 weeks. First I have a rock hit my car that both scratched the paint on the hood and cracked my Windshield. Now, the wind blew a tumbleweed in front of my car which scratched up the front end. gently caress!

I have close to 20k on my Golf and not a single mark on the front of the car. My windshield is already glittery as gently caress at night though. So many rear end in a top hat rock haulers out here in CO that throw poo poo on the road constantly.

:aaa: How have I never heard of this? This sounds perfect. Thank You!

***edit***
Crap, it's a bit pricey and they said it'll take 2 days to install. I think I'm gonna go ahead and do it, but I'll need to save up a bit (and have the existing damage fixed)first.

On the TDI you can tell when it is regenning: the idle will be raised a bit, a bit rougher, and if you are at a stop you can normally smell it a little bit. While the engine controls are able to deal with a shutdown in the middle of a regen and will just regen again (if needed) next time it gets up to temperature, shutting down during a regen cycle means you are shutting down the engine with a 1300-1400F EGT. That isn't good for the turbo bearing or the oil in the turbo if you do it regularly.

If I notice a regen while I'm out (I have a scangauge which reads EGT) I will normally just rearrange my errands so that it can complete before I need to park. It only takes a few minutes.

This is probably a stupid question, but for someone that's not very car literate is this something that can be monitored using one of those bluetooth OBDII adapters (More specifically the PLX Kiwi & Torq [android app])? I'm definitely loving the hell out of this car and don't want to gently caress anything up by shutting it down when it's regenning.

Also, this weekend I went with my Brother and his wife when they went car shopping. They're both VW fans and he's going to be commuting (basically the opposite of what I was doing. He's going from the Bay Area to Modesto) so they were looking at TDI's. In the end, they bought a Jetta Sportwagon TDI. I got to drive it a bit and quite like it. Despite the fact that it's a 'Wagon', I actually like the way it looks. It's not like the old, ugly monstrosities that were around back in the day that conjure up visions of the Family Truckster (National Lampoon's Vacation).

I considered that as a setup because it is much more slick than the scangauge but I already had the scangauge.

Awesome, thanks. I keep forgetting to check out that forum. Definitely bookmarking now.

My brother and I both have 2013 Jetta TDI's (his is a sportwagen). Neither have given us any issues. I just hit 20k miles (Bought mine in Oct. 2012) and my brother is over 36k miles (he bought his in Mar. 2013). The dealerships have also been great when I take it in for the carefree maintenance. On Wednesday, I called to schedule an appointment for Friday morning. It was a rough week, so I forgot what day of the week it was and ended up taking it in Thursday morning instead. The guy didn't mention that I was there on the wrong day and took it in for service even though they were already pretty booked. When I came back to pick it up, I apologized and explained to him what happened. He said he noticed that in the computer, but not to worry about it. They even washed the car.

I haven't asked my brother what kind of mileage he gets from his Sportwagen, but when I was commuting from Modesto to San Ramon, on a normal day, I'd get about 48 mpg. On a really good day, I could hit 52 mpg. (These figures are from the onboard computer, they have a real time and a trip average readout.) Winter, I think it would go down to about 42 mpg. Now that my trips are shorter (~8mi each way) I'm hitting ~38-ish mpg in summer and ~35-ish mpg in Winter.

Really, my biggest gripe was that I paid extra to get the Fender Audio system and the drat door pockets would vibrate and make noise. Fixed that with a bit of foam though.

**edit**
Forgot to mention, both of ours are DSG as well. I was originally looking at a manual, but the dealership didn't offer the Fender Audio system with those. At the time, I was commuting a lot so I wanted a nice audio system. It is quite nice for a stock system. Much better than the Bose Premium system I had in my old Acura 3.2 TL Type-S.
