Welcome to the SA Racing thread. Everyone is welcome to join at any time and there's no single game being focused. I'm organizing races when I can, but feel free to race games on your own and post em here.
Scripts: (Timer & Grid) | (Materials: Binding of Isaac) | (Materials: Mega Man X) | (Materials: Mega Man X2) | (Materials: Zelda) Software: Audacity - Free audio editor/recorder with lots of features. ChaosSamusX posted:Are we allowed to suggest races if we don't have the skill/technical competence to get such things done ourselves. Because there are some Sure. I've heard that one mentioned actually but hopefully it was a joke. Because some jerks raced Link to the Past for five hours, it opened up the doors for all kinds of awful ideas. We'll be doing some "Mystery Races" too, where no one knows what the game is until its time to start it up.

ChaosSamusX posted:Also, what level of expertise is expected from people who are racing? I'd be interested in joining, but I'd probably make the videos last twice as long. Your skill at a game is irrelevant and usually pretty entertaining to watch in contrast to people who crush it in the same group. I'd rather you not keep a call going for hours if you aren't going to win, but it wouldn't be anything new if that ends up happening. By the way, you guys don't really need to post your timezones or availability. We're pretty laid back about getting groups together. You just want to get in the main channel on skype for discussion and as a sort of race hub. From there, if you want to race Megaman X2, we'll give you a link or invite to the MMX2 call. This way we can easily see who's signed up for MMX2 out of all the racers.

We're starting Mega Man X-2 Races tomorrow, full game. If you want in this one you should be in the smaller room on skype for megaman, not just the general racing room. Let me know if you aren't and I'll get you an invite. You guys who haven't added me or accepted my contact request on skype, I can't invite you to anything until you do.

I made a guide for screen capturing with SCFH DSF (free) and virtualdub, for those that were interested in trying it this way. You can find it here. Let me know if you have any trouble getting it working. thevoiceofdog posted:Well it took me two goddamn months but I finally finished the recap video for the previous thread. It's currently still uploading but I'll be out of the house tonight, I might as well leave it for people to see. Let me know what you guys think. Think it has a little over an hour left.

Yeah, to resolve this we moved everyone to a new skype chat. It didn't solve the problem though, so hopefully it will go away soon. While I put together the MMX2 videos, we're going to try a few co-op races of Kirby Superstar. Videos will be 1 group versus another. If this works out well, I'll try some more co-op races in the future. To minimize lag, you should try to partner up with someone who isn't too far away geographically. Your connections will influence how far this can be, but the host probably won't lag at all and should do the recording.

If you got removed from the chat recently and want back in, let me know. It was because we haven't seen you in a while and skype doesn't seem to like the mass population. A Mega Man 3 race and some Mega Man X2 and co-op Kirby races are on the way. After they're up, I'll announce a new one. It'll probably be a longer, popular game divided into segments with a tournament bracket to the end. Smite fucked around with this message at 06:38 on Jan 7, 2013 |

New Current Race: The Binding of Isaac: RNG Race 2013, now featuring lazy banner recycling! I'll post groups here as I get them. This will be a tournament format to determine the Emperor of RNG. If you need one, a save profile can be provided. Watch out for it unlocking all your steam achievements though. Racing for this will start around Jan. 19th. Some rules are necessary to keep this from turning into the mess that the original attempts were. So here they are! Binding of Isaac Race Rules:
Unrelated: people have started organizing their own races and that's perfectly fine with me. In fact, it is intentional. With the races I'm hosting, I'm only trying to keep some fresh content coming in and set a basic standard for quality. I will try to keep these other races organized in the 2nd post in the OP. You can get the list of what's going on from the title in the skype chat. I would post it here, but it has open editing permissions.

Ashcan Pete posted:As someone with only a passing familiarity with Binding of Isaac, why are you restricting time spent on the slots? In any normal run, you will be out of money soon, or they will explode on you before very long, and there isn't that much to gain by playing them for a very long time. Ragny decided he would abuse the game and play slots forever with an item to spin them and make more. This extended a video from about 50 minutes to an hour and 35, and it's very boring for everyone involved. vvvvvv Okay it wasn't just the slots, but also item scumming with the d20 for way too long. Let's try to actually win instead of dick around. Here's what I mean by that Smite fucked around with this message at 00:51 on Jan 15, 2013 |

Maybe I don't get the joke, but this is the first video I've seen that hasn't met what I'm looking for in terms of quality. I've got big problems with it. The worst thing about it is this: Your introduction is literally 3 times longer than the gameplay, and doesn't say anything about when it actually starts either. While losing one guy's footage and still going through with it is something we've done in the past, it definitely puts another strike on the video and I would've considered scrapping it since it was a 4-man run. The audio could use a little bit of work. That intro, drat. Finally, is a newgrounds flash game really suited for this, just because it has a timer of some sort?

Binding of Isaac RNG Race 2013 is in full swing. Here's how the tournament is going to operate: This is going to be a 3-round event. I am going to eliminate approximately 50% of the racers each round so that only 6 are left for round 3. I will rank your performance on what your best cleared floor was. It doesn't matter whether or not you've cleared the alternate version of a floor (Utero is ranked the same as the Womb). In the event of a tie making or breaking someone's survival, I will compare initial clear times of this floor. For a labyrinth, you clear the first floor after boss 1, and the 2nd is cleared after boss 2. (e.g. if you die on the 2nd boss of Necropolis XL, I will consider you having cleared The Depths 1.) You may also have noticed that there aren't groups listed above; Who you actually race with doesn't matter (unless they finish really, really fast, which will limit your number of attempts). As usual, I'll not be assigning anyone into groups. Doing so usually causes more problems than it solves. Make sure you are familiar with the rules. Lots of people are planning to race round 1 today. If you wanted in and your name isn't listed above, it would appear that I've missed adding you for some reason. I had a lot of new applicants, so just shoot me a PM and I'll fix it. We can still accept new people until Jan. 26 (Saturday), at which point I'll probably be working on the videos and preparing for Round 2. senseinobu posted:I have a small question. You mentioned the clear time for a labyrinth being after you cleared the second boss. Does this hold for other floors, i.e. does clearing the boss early and then going through the floor mean that you have a shorter time for that floor than you actually spent. No, I should clarify that the floor is cleared when you jump in the pit, and the only exception to this is the first "half" of a labyrinth where I will go by the frame a boss dies.

Binding of Isaac Race Round 1, Group 4 - Apt Funk, Color Printer*, Power of Pecota, Xaiter Technical problems were bound to happen with this, and here they start. Color printer's video somehow had about 30 minutes of extra footage on it which was mostly freezing and skipping around. There wasn't any way I could use it. Also, I might not post one of the last two races for round 1 and just post the scores they got here, because it's got problems with 2 (half) of the videos in it. I am seeing if I can resolve the issues.

We're doing a few more of these Macaroni Castilla races, and next I'm going to organize either SOTN, Donkey Kong Country 2 or Contra 3. People have asked me about doing things like Mario Party and FTL, and I don't think they really belong here. We only have a mario party video in the history because it's from the meat boy thread, where we were organizing side-games that were not necessarily races like the score attack on Starfox 64. We were doing this to create some content while waiting for others to finish, because it was a tournament and we had to wait on them. I'd prefer content here create an interesting racing environment (interesting to watch), and also that a player's ability is a reasonably high factor in the outcome. Even the Binding of Isaac cares about how good you are in most runs. Smite fucked around with this message at 12:21 on Mar 8, 2013 |

The T posted:So with this said, are "score attack" races discouraged, or are they fine as long as they are games that gameplay is based on "skill" in some way? In general, I don't really want people to race to a million points in some survival mode or something, but it might be okay for some games. I'd prefer that a good clear time be the end goal rather than just points, because I think that an actual race is more interesting to watch than looking at numbers go up. Taking big risks for speed and sequence breaking is far more in line with what I'd hope to see. It depends on the game, but a lot of the ones that come to mind for a score attack would involve doing some boring stuff like slowly pouring over a level to find poo poo, using lovely attacks on purpose and having very little chance of failure. What we did with kirby co-op, giving a little bit of time back for picking up optional points, was an okay method of making score worth going after while keeping the ultimate goal of going fast. Speed didn't matter in Starfox because 4 of us finished within a minute of each other despite a pretty wide difference in performance, and even with us taking different routes. Barring some disaster, this would probably happen every time because of automated speed and how easy the game is. I doubt any SHMUP would work well, but maybe a harder one would be okay. judgementbringer posted:I'd be up for a SOTN race or a Donkey Kong Country 2 race. I'm curious as to how a SOTN race is going to go though. It seems like this race would take forever for most people, unless the race is going to be of Richter mode or Maria mode. This is going to be a single group that has people who know the game back to front, like we had for Super Metroid.

theunhackable1 posted:So, random couple of ideas I had during the insanely long shift I suffered though today... What's the general consensus on segmented RPG racing? The primary example that was on my mind was playing Chrono Trigger (snes) because in my opinion it's easy enough to play though without having to grind a lot. Or ever, contrary to what you'd have to do in Final Fantasy whatever. Absolutely not, there is absolutely no way to do this in a fast and interesting way, and I say that as someone who could write a 100% FAQ for Chrono Trigger off the top of my head. Hell, even if everyone skipped straight to Lavos with NG+, it would still be awful to watch. Menu-based games are not designed for split-screen. If you have some game in mind that doesn't fit the normal format of our usual action/platformer races (Mario/Megaman), you can just run it by me and see if it's a good idea.

I'm not able to add people to Skype very well anymore because they changed the way search works for some reason; I can't figure out a way to search just by username. Maybe I'm just missing something but when I search a username I sometimes get 20+ results. So if you want in, your best bet is to just add me, I'm the only result for joesmite. I'm organizing Megaman 5 races next, and we've already got enough for 4 or 5 teams of four. Drop me a line and I'll get you in. We might do Megaman 6 at some point, but I'll have to replay it and see just how crappy it is because I don't remember it at all.

There will be lots more Megaman 5 videos incoming soon, and another BOI video that happened in the start of March. I've been pressed for time recently but I should be able to get these up in a timely manner now.

Here is what's going on with what races I'm organizing: We are doing one final race for Megaman 5 (top times from the previous groups) and I still have group 5's video to make as well. I don't have any plans to host Megaman 6 or X3, I'll leave that up to anyone who is interested in those games. I'm also organizing groups for Contra 3 so those videos should be coming up soon after. I was planning to do a co-op, team vs. team thing, but that isn't panning out too well for this game; even small amounts of latency is making it very difficult to play. Co-op is optional, and some people are going to try it (personally, I think 2P makes the game harder even without adding the latency/stability issues). If you do it that way, make sure you test it with your partner first. For difficulty, it'll probably be on normal, with some bonus time for clearing it on hard. After Contra 3 is done (June probably), I'm intending to do some segments of Donkey Kong Country 1 and/or 2.
