I was planning on rewatching this anyway, this thread is going to get me to do it sooner rather than later I think.

My favourite part of the third three seasons is knowing how Stringer will end up and seeing just how early on he starts to wind that noose around his own neck. I agree that it's pretty much impossible for this show to have a "best episode" but the last two episodes of season 3 are up there.

Didn't he say when he gave up on that that he just wanted to play detective one last time?

While he's good police and knows where to draw the line to keep out of trouble, I wouldn't necessarily call him 'good'. He is also assumed to drink and drive, and has cheated on his wife at least once that we know of, and further helps send Jimmy back into a downward spiral despite criticizing that particular trait of his in the past.

Within the show's cast, he's probably one of the good ones, though.

I'll forgive Bunk everything for being one of the few cast members to call Omar out on his bullshit. People get this impression that Omar is honourable because he only targets people who are "in the game" but the series stresses over and over how many people in the game are kids who have to do it to survive and have no prospects. Bunk is having no part of the Omar fan club: "We had us a community... now all we got is bodies, and predatory motherfuckers like you."

Yeah, Bunk's a cheater and a jobsworthy company man, but he does care, in a way NcNulty doesn't.

I don't think Colvin ever intended to clean up Hamsterdam. That whole idea was just put out there to get his guys on board. He had 6 months left and he wanted to go out actually making a difference. That's the whole crux of the paper bag speech - alcohol laws were keeping police from doing real police work, until it was hidden from view. You can see his frustration with the system in his scenes with Carver and Herc, asking what they had brought the different perps in for. He felt it was a waste of time and the only way he could think of to do real police work was to literally make the problem disappear.

Edit: Also, based on the paper bag speech, he legitimately thought this would fly since it was a parallel thing in his mind. That's why he's so shocked and angry when he gets busted down. I don't think he ever once considered that he would get in trouble for it.
Man, his reactions at the end of the season are just the saddest thing. Telling McNulty he's cool with it when he's so obviously not, and when he talks about it with Bubbles.
Colvin: "it was a good thing, huh?"
Bubbles: *thinks about it and does not seem to come to the conclusion that it was a good thing*
Poor guy can't even feel like he did the right thing at the end of it.

He gains not being informed on by someone who's seen and talked to him in person, doesn't he? Also puts off anyone else who might be thinking of snitching.

Could be both. He knew D'Angelo cut his ties with Avon, didn't he? That's definitely something to be concerned about.
