Reflecting on that legacy, the actor also expressed some concerns over the way the character came to be glorified.

"We're all idolising Stringer Bell, but who are we really idolising?" Elba said. "Are we idolising a smart drug dealer or a dumb narcotics dealer? What are we saying here? Is it okay to pump a community full of heroin, but because you're smart at it that makes you cool?

"It doesn't matter how successful they are. It doesn't matter how good to the community they are. They will end up getting caught because what they're doing is illegal. As much as people celebrated the character, the harsh reality is that you either get shot or go to jail.".

edit: the more I think about it, it's almost like he didn't watch the show at all. The Wire is ultimately making the exact point that he is,

He's going to get a hell of a shock when he watches season 3

Between the accents and words I don't know I have a hard time with some UK shows too. I just turn on subtitles.

Funnily enough, when my UK friend ripped the DVDs for me, they all had the subtitles burned in because he had problems with the accents and words he didn't know for this US show.

It irritated me at first cause you could see he was going to get screwed by Marlo a mile away. But I can see the realism in a smart person making a stupid decision.

Plus, he didn't expect to get stabbed in the back by his own nephew, Cheese.

Snoop was ruthless and efficient, a real soldier, just like Bodie and Weebay.

I think that at a superficial level, you could regard her as a stone-cold killer with complete loyalty to her boss.

Of course, the reality was that she was a psychopath who killed children on the whims of a greedy drug dealer, including a young boy she mentored. But hey, some people still regard Scarface as an aspirational story.

Method Man does such a good job with Cheese. One of my favorite performances on a show that has a lot of great ones.

He definitely showed his "rap peers" why he deserved to get the role.

I know that there is a big difference between characters and actors, but that bums me out.

My favorite Kima scene.

Where the viewer is taken on a journey from "oh wow this lady is not happy with the police brutality--maybe this is her 'thing'...wonder what she'll do" all the way to "lol nope".

Yeah, that bit was awesome.

I think it works so well because a lot of the show was fairly vanilla at the point and you weren't even thinking too hard about it - you just assumed she was going to stop the beating. So when she started wailing on the guy, my head suddenly started somersaulting, trying to understand it.

It's not just that she can talk poo poo as well as the boys, she's loving better at it.

She's one of the best depictions of a Strong Female in movie/TV ever. I'd put her in the same class as Ellen Ripley.

I do like how, when she was introduced, she was the anti-McNulty: clean, smart, on time, respectful of the bosses and in a loving relationship and starting a family.

But, being natural po-lice, it wasn long before she was screwing around, lying to her other half, 'divorced' and paying child maintenance, just like McNulty.

He's not just an actor he was the Baltimore Police Commissioner for a short stint before he got caught up in some corruption scandal and had to spend a few years behind bars.

quote:

In December 2003, Norris was indicted on three charges by U.S. Attorney Thomas DiBiagio. Two of the counts charged Norris had made illegal personal expenditures of over $20,000 from the Baltimore Police Department's supplemental account in order to pay for expensive gifts, personal expenses, and extramarital affairs with at least six women.[3] The third count alleged that he had lied on a mortgage application, stating that approximately $9,000 he received from his father was a gift, when it was actually a loan.

Norris was investigated by the US Attorney of Maryland for abuse of a non-taxpayer funded expense account. While looking for violations, it was discovered that Norris borrowed $9,000 from his father for a home purchase. Norris and his father signed gift letters stating the money was a gift. It was discovered that Norris had returned the money to his father at a later date; at that point the gift became a loan. Norris was then indicted for making a false statement on a mortgage application.

In a plea agreement, the mortgage charge was dropped in exchange for a guilty plea of abusing the expense account, which Norris had denied. On March 8, 2004 Norris pleaded guilty to federal corruption and tax charges.[4] Norris was sentenced to six months in federal prison in Yazoo City, Mississippi and Atlanta, Georgia, to be followed by three years of supervised probation and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service. The case alleged lavish gifts and meals were given to friends and girlfriends.

Despite the guilty plea, Norris has publicly maintained his innocence claiming that the case was politically motivated and the guilty plea was forced because of his mortgage issue. In an October 9, 2006 newspaper article Norris admitted to using the money from the alleged accounts, but said that he paid it back in full before he left office to take the position of Maryland State Police Superintendent.[5]

The got him with The Headshot.

Baltimore demographics perhaps?

White: 30.29%
Asian: 2.56%
Two or more races: 2.32%
Other race: 1.68%
Native American: 0.30%
Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.05%

This is a show where the racial tensions in the city is a major, reoccurring plot point.

Where significant decisions are made where the characters are acutely sensitive of these issues.

And you seriously think that the police force, which is 50% black, with a black commissioner, under a black mayor, decided to use a radio code for the black population of 'Black people R crims. LOL'?

Rather than assigning the first numeral in a numerical list to the most populous demographic of the city?
