MUTEkI posted:Re-watching the video I notice one of the characters apparently has the surname Owari, which can mean "The End". Fascinating, though it's still probably a bit too early to say where they're going with that. Still, the Asahina derivations notwithstanding there's a clear you-know-who vibe I'm getting from her -- for one thing the one line major we've heard from her so far, "Why is that chihuahua talking" is almost so clueless as to be suspicious in itself, though it probably IS still too early to call. Hajime is Japanese for "The Beginning" and Owari is Japanese for "The End." I'm curious where they're going with this one.

Looks like Nagito is super-optimistic, too. Everything we've seen so far is consistent with an older or somehow alternate Naegi. However...quote:Is it just me, or is this not the face and posture of a good guy? He sets off my "villain-dar" like WOAH. edit: I think he physically looks like Naegi combined with Junko. Which might not be related to anything in the story, but intended as either a clue or red herring to the viewer. Saeku fucked around with this message at 14:56 on Dec 14, 2012 |

dog days are over posted:I'm really sorry if I missed it but is Usami's name some kind of pun? I get that usagi means rabbit. It's a small pun. Usami is a normal Japanese given name, which as you said, sounds like Usagi. Her other name, Monomi, so far as I'm aware isn't a normal name, but "-mi" is a typical pattern for Japanese girl's names. For an English comparison, it'd be something like "Mononique."

Autumncomet posted:You raise some good points. It's just that, like Souda says, on the surface, Usami seems really nice and unwilling to hurt the students or let them be hurt. I absolutely expect these rules to be subverted and twisted by the murderers in the future (otherwise, no murder mystery game), but it seems like they were intended to keep the peace, as their surface reading suggests. The other side of this could be that Usami is just putting on an act and fully expects the students to exploit loopholes in the rules, but if so, she's doing a much better job than Monobear of hiding it. I'm guessing the rules will change when Usami transforms into her alter ego, Monomi (whom we see standing with Monobear on the title screen.) Maybe this will happen once rule 3 is broken?

loquacius posted:Seems kind of odd to me that a work produced in a country where American comics have so little cultural penetration would contain a generic-supervillain-pastiche type character. Always thought of that as a Western-comics trope. Am I off-base there? Anyhow, wow, the novel is something alright. Without the expressive character designs, music, and all-star voice acting, the tone comes off as really weird and off-putting (no criticism of the translation here.) This makes me very glad that you included all the audio and video content in your LP, orenronen, to capture the mood! Plus, the dialogue is completely saturated with meaningless ellipses. Are the scripts of the games anything like that? I vaguely remember you saying something about editing ellipses from the first game's dialogue but I might be wrong.

Redmark posted:I honestly think it's a Japanese thing, some artifact of the language's construction. Almost everything novel-esque in Japanese that I've ever read is like that. This is a sincere question and not a burn. Were you reading literary novels or light novels? I'm curious if ellipses are a "Japanese thing" or specifically a "manga/anime/game" thing. They're quite suited to express pauses in manga and games, but in novels, the're really sloppy writing, I think.

Mikan reminds me a lot of Ryouko Otonashi, so far. They have the same hair texture and facial shape. Both characters laugh at inappropriate times using the same onomatopoeia, and they have low self-esteem and a ridiculous desire to please. Plus Mikan is a nurse and Ryouko is in the neurology building in the chapter we read (although she might be coming to get help with her memory, not to study.)

orenronen posted:...But I guess we get to stay in the future after all! Heh... get it? ‘Cause “Mirai” means -- I'm just gonna quote all the poo poo that makes Nagito look evil! Dumb Nagito specualtion ahead: I have no idea what his DEAL is, though. I doubt he's Naegi in disguise, because his eyes look different, and if he would make his name so transparent, why change his birthdate? So judging by this, I think Nagito or whoever gave Nagito his name, knew that Naegi had taken out SHSL Despair. This has interesting implications about the time frame of DR2. When Hinata enrolled, obviously the "word despairing incident" or whatever hadn't happened yet. Since Naegi's class was the only class in his year and the last class to be admitted to Hope's Peak, Hinata must have entered Hope's Peak before Naegi. But Nagito definitely entered Hope's Peak at some point after Naegi left, meaning we're in the future, and this Togami is our Togami after the events of DR1. Togami must have gained weight after he left Hope's Peak, which probably took at least a few months. But in this case, it would seem that Hinata is older than Nagito and Togami and DR2 takes place at least 2.5 years after Hinata enrolled... but Hinata hasn't noticed any aging in himself and still looks young. And how come Togami seems to know that he gained weight, but doesn't immediately bring up the events of DR1? Because of this, I think some of the characters (Hinata and Togami at minimum) have not missing memories, but false memories, which include Hinata's memory of how/when he got into Hope's Peak.

slowbeef posted:It means if your post only consists of "I'm sad Togami died!" and that's it, then it's low content. Pre-emptive strike. Even if there were, that would be a little too similar to a climactic puzzle of a game that most Dangan Ronpa players should be familiar with. Like, it may be meant to be an easy puzzle, but I can't imagine them going with something so derivative-seeming.

In a fit of stupidity, I GIS'ed Nagito early on so I could get a better look at his outfit. Luckily, I didn't see any spoilers. Unluckily, the reason I didn't see any spoilers was that "Nagito" is apparently the name of a Japanese gay porn star, so my screen was covered with gay porn. Don't google. Regy Rusty posted:No clear indication on what the weapon was that killed him yet, which is a good sign that it may indeed be the missing skewer. Alternatively, the culprit couldn't see Togami -- because it was dark, or he was under the floorboards -- so he stabbed him many times to make sure he was dead.
