I AM GRANDO posted:This feels like a stupid question, but I can’t find a good answer: I bought an LG tv recently and noticed after I hooked up the antenna that it has not only the broadcast channels I receive, but also maybe 200 LG-branded streaming channels that have various things on loop: forensics files, mythbusters, the old Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, and also themed movie channels. Are these really just free streaming channels that are paid for by ads and that came free with my tv? All together they simulate the experience of having basic cable in the 90s pretty well (I don’t know if the movies are tv edits, but I assume they are). Pretty much yea. I'm not sure if they were the first but Pluto seems to have started it and now there's just a bunch of free ad supported streaming services.

FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) They are basically automated stations that have a few different revenue split models between the owner of the content and the platform. It's very easy and cheap to get a steam added to a platform and it's a HUGE additional revenue stream for the content owner.

I'll add: Nosferatu, Blade Runner 2049, the Wailing, Tron Legacy (Blu-ray only), The Shining, The Northman, Mad Max Fury Road & Furiosa, Top Gun Maverick, Tenebrae, all the John Wick movies, any movie shot on VistaVision like North by Northwest, Vertigo etc, most Christopher Nolan movies, Murder on the Orient Express/Death on the Nile, Thief, To Live and Die in LA, The Boy and the Heron That's from a casual look at one of my shelves but that will get you started lol. Plenty for I think every genre and type of movie fan. I normally watch older horror stuff shot on film so if you want any suggestions there I have like 1500 lol Stuff shot on film holds up incredibly well on OLED TVs because HDR & Dolby Vision help the visuals punch even harder. Edit: Misters whole list is really good too- forgot about the newer animated stuff and literally any BBC nature documentary shot in 4k will look great. All the Ghibli movies look great on OLED too, 4k or not Edit again: Suspiria Captain Yossarian fucked around with this message at 05:14 on Apr 15, 2025 |

I decided on the S95F since I am a PC gamer that can make use of all 165 frames (5090). It’s reserved, With any luck I hope to pick it up tomorrow. I'm a little worried about the anti glare coating on the S95F but my theater room can be almost completely darkened so I'm hoping it won't be an issue. I figure with the world rapidly devolving, at least my toys can be john blaze. Hey btw the S95F apparently uses DSC as we discussed earlier but it fits into a 40gbps envelope. Just to be sure, that is enough bandwidth for 4:4:4 on top, right? qirex posted:Very few receivers actually support 48gbps because the chipset they all used is from a single vendor and could only do 40 [after promising 48 and coming out a year later than expected]. IMO it's usually best to just connect directly to the display and use ARC. It really depends on what your use case is. I had my receiver connected via eARC for a long time, and it worked fine with very low latency, but I started using Atmos for gaming and there was an audio delay. So I connected my HDMI 2.1 computers directly to the receiver. Surprisingly it worked fine with zero problems and that's how I have it set up now. There's no perceivable downside to the configuration. Interestingly the S95F one connect box only supports HDMI 40gpbs as well (perhaps for similar vendor reasons) but it uses DSC to achieve full 4K@165. So at least theoretically, it seems like you could run 4K@165 through even a receiver if you wanted? I'll try some stuff once I get the TV. I haven't found any sources really getting into the gaming aspects of the S95F (besides noting that it's probably the best platform for it in 2025, while the G5 seems better for media) besides Vincent who does verify the 40gbps figure for their 4K/165 VRR implementation. I've got a 55" LG C3 (OLED55C3PUA) floating around with a few hundred hours that I picked up in a trade, but right after installing it, I realized I needed a 65". I didn't plan to do anything about it any time soon, but someone is offering to trade me their 65" Sony Ah8 (XBR-65A8H). Truth be told, I barely watch anything on it. My kids watch Bluey or whatever else, and the number of times a year that I sit down with the intent of really watching something (other than like, having Seinfeld on while making dinner), is in the single digits. As such, the fine-grain details about the quality of the screen are mostly irrelevant for me. What I am curious about is burn in. I have the TV hooked up to a full desktop PC that I watch everything through. It's not uncommon for the TV to be on for a couple hours at a time with the firefox browser open and playing a video, since nobody full-screened the show. This means the tabs, taskbar, etc. are all on the screen for awhile. It would rarely be more than three hours a day, but it's probably seven days a week. Is that something I would need to be worried about? On the AH8, or even any OLED at all?
|
![]() |
|
I would personally be pretty worried about that, yeah. But it depends on exactly where the task bars are, and if the location changes on the desktop. If you're talking about a video "full screen" but with the window border every time (so the entire browser window is static on the outer areas of the panel) and you are really doing that for hours every day 7 days a week, lol yeah dude that's pretty bad. Now, will you actually notice that burn in? Idk, how long do you intend to wait before you upgrade? Minor burn in can exist but not be a big deal in practice ![]() It's too bad because you're the perfect use case for not using an OLED but have somewhat hilariously been roped into one not once but twice due to some kind of Zelda-style barter system.
|

That's sort of what I was expecting, yeah. I didn't end up swapping for the 65" OLED, but figured I'd check before going through that process a second time. Thanks for the perspective! Mini-LED it is.

The CRT thing is funny because in the 90s my PC monitor was capable of running higher resolutions than the LCD screen tech that followed like 10 years later and even then the image quality on the CRT shat all over that of an LCD for a long, long time after.

CRTs were good at smoothing over digital edges due to it being an analog display format and the initial batch of LCDs also couldn’t match in contrast, color depth, or pixel response. Also, until DVI was common, LCDs had a disadvantage of trying to convert a digital signal that was converted to analog, back to digital again. You had a pixel perfect display that couldn’t accept a pixel perfect input. Once digital input was a common thing, a lot of fuzziness issues were resolved and the display tech slowly improved for improved color gamut, pixel response times, and black levels/contrast. CRTs still do scaling better than digital displays in many instances since they don’t actually have pixels and have a sort of built in analog level of anti-aliasing. That’s why lower resolution content can look so much better on a CRT.

My trusty old (10+ years) Panasonic plasma tv is close to giving up the ghost. Frequently when I turn it on, it shuts off after 15-20 seconds and then the power LED just blinks red. If I disconnect it completely from power and wait 10-15 minutes I can usually get back on after several cycles of this, so it's likely on its last legs and needs to be replaced. I know very little of current tvs, and have basically very little money to replace it, so anything top of the line is out of the question. I would like something around 60-65" I assume the smart tv crap is unavoidable these days, but what is the least annoying? I only need 3 HDMI inputs, and either an analog or optical audio out. I assume almost anything has that? I value a good picture, but am also realistic in what I can achieve with a limited budget. What brands/model should I look for?

I just set up my new S95F and it is amazing. I'm upgrading from the S95B. Pairing this bad boy with a 5090 PC, Apple TV, Mac Mini M4 (the latter of which is probably the best $499 I've spent in a minute). Listen to me. The Best Buy TV warranty. It's un-loving-believable. There was extremely minor burn in on my S95B around the task bar, we are talking barely noticeable unless you're running a test pattern specifically on red/magenta. I wondered if they would give me poo poo for being a baby about such minor burn but they had no problem with it at all and handed me $2,500 towards the S95F and I got to keep the perfectly functioning S95B which is now going elsewhere in the house since it's still a beautiful panel (and I modded it to 1500 nits). Best buy owns. If you use your TV as a PC monitor the peace of mind using the warranty is insane. It's almost like an Upgrade Program which also lets you keep the set after and drive the poo poo out of it using it as a PC monitor, lol. Unfortunately the price is about 50% higher than when I bought it for my S95B in 2022, but I think it's still worth it for PC monitor folks. I love warranties. Applecare is the poo poo because it lets you use your phones/ipads without a case, and the BB warranty also lets you drive your poo poo as hard as you want but also throws you a new TV (with option to put the credit towards whatever you want) 3-5 years down the line and you keep the existing set. Some notes since even most reviewers don't seem to have one yet: - all the TV supernerds are really mad about the anti glare coating on this screen, even calling it "matte". It did worry me. It's incredibly pervasive. Everyone online talks mad poo poo on it. So I was a little 50/50 on buying this over the G5 or the Bravia 8 MK2. Unfortunately global trade is grinding to a halt right now so I bought the TV I could actually get, but tacked on a 60 day return window, so who knows maybe I'll swap it later, but probably not. I'm happy to say that the anti glare is actually really good! For some reason, Youtube Videos reviewing the S95F make it look way worse than it is, which must be a quirk of viewing the screen through a camera. It's a huge relief and I would say to people on the fence because of this anti glare, it's improved from the S95D (which was already not bad). Not an issue for me at all so far. - the One Connect box is great. My previous S95B was a bit squirrely with HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, so I was worried about getting full 165 fps, VRR, 4:4:4 HDR. Welp, I shouldn't have worried, because it is rock fuckin' solid and gave me absolutely zero trouble. Such a relief. Surprisingly, via the magic of DSC, the S95F gives you the full 165fps glory while only using 40gbps. That also means more cables will work since it's not having to transmit the full 48gbps. This means they have more headroom next year, maybe 200 fps incoming? lol... - holy gently caress it is so bright, the colors are insane, and there are various ways to make it even brighter if you don't care about accuracy (contrast enhancer, color enhancer etc). I don't care about accuracy so I like using these extra features and think they, used selectively, make a lot of media look incredible. It's so bright that I wouldn't even want to mod the nits like I did with the S95B, this is legit as bright as anyone could want imo. Really impressed so far but I'll hold off on any kind of final word until I've used it for a while. ![]() Some S95F review resources, by no means comprehensive but there's only a handful of good reviews out there so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MufiCc-qfFY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBKaRf3ozgU Taima fucked around with this message at 00:48 on Apr 19, 2025 |
