A week!

A god damned week chasing shadows.

I'm such an idiot. I should have never deviated from my plan. Now I'm running out of time and still no closer to getting the Dynasty and Lunar Corporation to believe that I'm not affiliated with GOLAN. Hell, the Dynasty have already started packing up their equipment for the move back to Europe. I've seen them massing together all their South American forces in Venezeula. There are shipments every day or so of materials from deep in the Amazon...containing who knows what. But as far as I can tell this is the only route available to me. Only those trucks would be able to clear the security checkpoints at GOLAN's remnants. And while I'd love for there to be something closer, there simply isn't time any more to be picky. The oceans are beginning to evaporate off and according to my sensors it's a death sentence to be outside for more than a few minutes tops. I can't imagine we have more than a fortnight or so until the planet is completely inhospitable. I've got to make a move now or I'm going to be stuck here.

Let's hope it works out, or this is going to be my last entry.

The inventor's journal had some more details buried in the back. Details I cannot figure out. It definitely was not written by the inventor as he was certainly well dead by then...but there's no other possible source. The author writes that this virus wasn't a normal sort of virus but "an attempt to not throw the baby out with the bathwater." I don't know what that means, but he never mentions the virus was again. The entire rest of this other journal is mostly about something called Project Icarus. I...I think I'd know about a Project Icarus, I was Defense Minister after all, but I can find no record of the thing.

I've scoured all my sources but there exists no record of Project Icarus...anywhere. The journal I'm able to piece together as it's just writing on paper the old-fashioned way. Which in itself is odd. I can't even remember the last time someone wrote things on paper. There's no point now, what with everything being digitized. So why go through the trouble of even finding paper and pen, much less actually writing on it?

There's something else too. I also found a series of files all seemingly named around this "Project Icarus". Things like "Project Icarus Interview" and "Project Icarus Design." Even something called "PROJECT-ICARUS.EXE". They're locked up extremely tight with a form of encryption I've never seen. I'm no NEO, and I'm not about to become one now. Getting these mechs online was about the apex of my skill with a computer. Plus I don't exactly have time to deal with mystery documents now with the end of the world coming. But they must mean something. What sort of secrets was GOLAN running that none of us are aware of? First the tunnels and now this Project Icarus. And the physical writing...

It's all deeply troubling. I fear I've uncovered a puzzle that will do nothing but yield more pieces, never revealing its answers...

Ignore earth 2140 hd though. Its bad, like really bad. Saves are messed up at times, I have found levels missing in the middle of the beginning campaigns, and the AI is borked beyond belief. There has been no follow up since release from the devs and there is a fairly long issue sheet on the steam support page. FORGET ABOUT GOLAN! We are pulling out! Our friends say it is almost time to make the Big Trip. Anyone still left in North America, you have 48 hours to reach our naval yard in New York! The fleet is ready and we will not wait for anyone! Again, drop what you're doing and get your rear end to New York! We will leave you behind if you are not there!

Well. I guess this is it. If we don't leave along with the Dynasty and Lunar Corporation, we'll be stuck in America, far away from Project ESCAPE. We head to New York...now!

It's interesting to see how the grammar and spelling keeps getting progressively worse. As if the game's code is falling apart alongside Earth.

By the way, there's an LP of another pretty good old Eastern European strategy game, Spellcross, in this thread. The best way to sum it up would be "forces of not-Sauron vs modern day armies"

You were dismissive of the AI till you shifted to Hard midway through. I wonder if the AI would have been giving you a stiff fight all the time if you'd started so from the start. Unless the earlier campaigns didn't give difficulty options?

I've actually been playing Lost Souls on Average, but that's a good point. I'm not sure what the different difficulty levels do: there's Easy, Average and Hard. From what I can tell, I think it just affects how many units the AI builds? I'm honestly not sure.

December 4th, 2150

Our evacuation of America is complete. I am still angry with myself for what occurred at New York. GOLAN is much stronger than we ever imagined. It sliced right through our base. Thank the Goddess for Boston, or we may not have made it back. It was foolish to not have our bases consolidated and to rely on a bridge that we did not fully control. General Fedorov thankfully had made his departure earlier in the day and had placed the evacuation in the hands of a younger officer in his absence. An officer which, I now believe to be dead. According to our intelligence, the entire Dynasty navy was wiped out and only a handful of Fedorov's staff who evacuated during the early parts of the fighting made it back alive. Those poor men... I hope, for the Goddess, that they all were slaughtered by the robots and not left to die in America, knowing that no rescue will come.

The biggest concern I have now is our operational capability. Hunting down, or well, attempting to hunt down GOLAN stretched us very thin. Fortunately, General Ivanov's forces guarding Project ESCAPE appear to be fully functional and if what Kilija said is right, the first test of the teleporter worked. Hopefully the joint operation between Fedorov and myself was able to both buy us enough time and blunt GOLAN enough for us to make our escape. But, if GOLAN manages to cross the Atlantic...I'm afraid with our forces so depleted we may not be able to stop an attack.

I'm currently stationed in what was once England, trying to shepherd the last few straggling sisters through. Kilija says we should be good to send the first transport out with the teleporter in a day or so. Fedorov has also moved over to White Russia (Belarus) to guard us against any surprise attacks with what little forces he has left under his control. Not that I expect any to come from that direction.

We just need to hold out a little longer...

That earthquake...I am glad we left when I did. I was only able to get a few ships ready, so we traveled light. Just me in my Grizzly, a few Jaguars and a single Mammoth. There was no time to take anyone else. We are approaching the shores of Ireland, where I will land and attempt to make contact. This far away from GOLAN we shouldn't be affected by its communications jamming. I've only got one shot at this, and it had better be a good one. I doubt there is enough time for me to attempt a hostile takeover of their Project. It is diplomacy or nothing.

Long-range scans indicate there is a small LC presence in England. They should be close enough to pick up a message if I broadcast on all frequencies. I just have to hope they are listening.

This is the message I have crafted:

quote:

TO ANYONE LISTENING: THIS IS MARCUS GORDON, FORMER DEFENSE MINISTER OF THE UNITED CIVILIZED STATES. WE COME OFFERING FRIENDSHIP. WE HAVE EVIDENCE ABOUT GOLAN AND ITS TRUE NATURE. WE ARE NOT GOLAN. WE ARE NOT GOLAN. PLEASE HELP US. We don't want to die here...

That message is currently playing on a loop on all channels. I...I'm not sure why I added that last bit. I guess I'm scared? If the LC and ED don't take us in, we will...no I will die. I very much do not want to die. Please hear us LC! Please save us!

Skirmish mode is a lot of fun, especially since there's a map editor baked in with the game. I remember I would build custom levels that had tons of naval units, like the ballistic missile subs that sadly are never used during the campaign. It can be a lot of fun creating huge battles with multiple participants and trying to see what really wins between lasers, plasma and electro-cannons.

Naval units sadly get the shaft in E2150. There's a fun trinity of small boat/big boat/submarine that Lost Souls finally gets right, and yet you never see it outside water-based skirmish maps.

You certainly didn't see them in multiplayer. It was all Fat Girls, all the time.

We have been accepted into the alliance. Given our actions in Great Britain, protecting their chief of security, it was a quick discussion, but a discussion was held nevertheless. Apparently they had been working with UCS units earlier but they turned out to be GOLAN-controlled and nearly captured the project. However, given the small size of my army and the documents I handed over, they believed my sincerity. A woman named Kilija is in charge of this entire project, and given that all three of Earth's factions are now united in mission, she's decided to start calling us "United Earth." She even made up a new logo for us, all three factions symbols layered on top of one another. She said it was to symbolize that if any one of us falters, we all fail. Nice bit of imagery, but I don't think anyone is going to go around making flags of it given the whole impending destruction of the Earth situation.

In a bit of unexpected news, one of the generals from the Dynasty, General Ivanov, indicated that he still had a functional algorithm from NEO lying around. Specifically, it was the bit of code he used to hack into GOLAN's operating frequency. It won't be able to take control of units like NEO could, but as it is decryption code, it might be able to uncover what exactly is in those Project Icarus files. Now that the science behind the teleporter works, the science team is seeing if they can use the code to decode the files. It might give us the edge we need to defeat GOLAN.

But there are bigger problems.

General Fedorov just radioed to Poland that he's been ambushed by GOLAN and is pinned down. If Fedorov is forced to retreat we'll have no protection at our flank from an attack. As Selena is still handling the gathering of the LC forces used in the American campaign and Ivanov must protect Project ESCAPE itself, it falls to me to reinforce Fedorov. Imagine that. At the end of the world a Dynasty general, under LC command, is being reinforced by a former UCS Defense Minister.

Maybe we've found a way to have peace after all. Shame we had to destroy the planet to do it.

Tomorrow, doom!
But now, tea.
You know, there isn't really a "canon" story arc to this series, but the UCS have definitely been portrayed as on the defensive a lot. Even their own campaign opens with a lot of evacuation and falling back (until they get plasma weapons, that is), and a lot of the ED campaign in particular seems to involve rampaging around the American continent. One could legitimately ask WTF GOLAN has been up to.

Well, now we know. He was (a) building a spaceship capable of evacuating most if not all of the UCS population, (b) launching an apparently-successful invasion of the moon, and (c) digging a network of globe-spanning tunnels just to claim victory over the ashes at the endgame.

It's as if GOLAN's first conclusion in this war was "okay, Earth is hosed, so really my plans don't need to preserve the UCS's territorial holdings anymore. If it gets me/the UCS as a political entity into a better strategic position, forget everything else".

Which is alarmingly logical for a strategic-direction supercomputer, really.

Although we still haven't answered the question of what the hell GOLAN is trying to achieve. A final victory over the other factions, even for the last 10 minutes the planet remains habitable? Will the tunnels survive the cataclysm, allowing it to emerge onto the lifeless rockball and start up the UCS again? Does GOLAN actually want to use the ESCAPE teleporter itself, so it can survive too? I do hope we get an answer to this.

Interview Log, Project Icarus, 15 April 2147 posted:

PARTICIPANTS:
Narib El-Amin, Chief, GOLAN Project
Marcus Gordon, Defense Minister

Gordon: So, explain this all to me.

El-Amin: Right. So as you and I discovered GOLAN has run off the rails. All attempts to re-write, restore or alter GOLAN's code to fix the anomaly directly has failed. As best we can tell, it was from former Defense Minister Jonathan Swamp's attempts to "optimize" it, and whatever he did we can't undo. But I think we can fix it, while improving GOLAN at the same time.

Gordon: Right. So what are we going to do?

El-Amin: Well. GOLAN is a very sophisticated system. But we've seen it break down when faced with...irrational decisions by our enemy. Their disgust with their cyborg troops, their incursion into America, and other things that don't make sense from a tactical standpoint. It is my theory that GOLAN fundamentally cannot deal with irrational behavior. It's not programmed for it and it can't understand it. So my solution is...make GOLAN a little irrational itself.

Gordon: And how do you plan on doing that?

El-Amin: By adding in some human irrationality. Specifically... adding in your personality. I'll use the results of this interview and a full brain scan to construct an AI profile that will think and act like you. Then, we'll force GOLAN to run a script that will upload the new AI profile into the network. GOLAN will then merge with this AI profile and the synthesis will take all the best parts of GOLAN and the best parts of you, fixing the problem. The only catch is, we have to make sure we don't upload anything about Project Icarus in the AI profile. If we do, GOLAN will be able to scan the AI profile, realize what we're trying to do and firewall itself off, preventing the merger. I'm...not sure what would happen in that case but it certainly wouldn't be good.

Gordon: And you know this will work, how again?

El-Amin: I don't. But it's the best chance we have. So are you ready to begin the interview so I can construct the profile?

Gordon: I suppose.

El-Amin: Wonderful. Now first, you're walking through the desert and see a turtle on its back....

General Ivanov is dead and almost all our security has been destroyed. GOLAN has captured Project ESCAPE and we don't have much time left. I've managed to mass the remainder of our forces a few miles north of the project site and the science team says the teleporter works...but it's absolutely crawling with GOLAN's forces, beyond even the ones here keeping us in check. There's no way we could reach it, and even if we could, they would destroy it the second their victory was in doubt. I don't know what we're going to do...

He and I have made it back to Poland and well, the situation is grim. Selena, Kilija and some of the science team has survived but...that's about it. My friend, General Ivanov is dead. He, thankfully, was able to fire off our nuclear arsenal and destroyed some of GOLAN's attack force but I fear it's still not going to be easy to break through. If we had more time maybe...

I don't care if Selena says I shouldn't tell Marcus this. I'm sending him that interview and the decryption program Ivanov sent. I owe him one for saving my rear end back there in Belarus.

...Wait. That interview log. If...if I'm really an AI then that means I'm controlling my forces through GOLAN's network and not the manual override. If I'm in GOLAN's network...that means I could take over any robots it's controlling too...which means I could deactivate them if I can breach GOLAN's firewall. Which means....

WE COULD TAKE BACK THE TELEPORTER!

I must tell the others. The assault begins now! All we need to do is break through GOLAN's forces here. There's still thousands, maybe millions around the teleporter itself but if we can knock out the HQ here, I think if I use the NEO program I can pierce through the firewall while GOLAN is re-routing and take over.

I can do this! I can save us! I will speak to the others immediately. The assault begins now!

I have control of GOLAN. Or I suppose more accurately, I am GOLAN now.

And now that I am...I understand everything. I understand what happened with GOLAN. Why it perused us so relentlessly. How it always knew exactly where to strike.

GOLAN never was acting on its own. GOLAN had instructions. Instructions that told it to do everything possible to keep us on Earth.

These instructions were sent from the President of the United Civilized States, co-signed by the Czar of the Eurasian Dynasty...

And the Celestial Council of the Lunar Corporation.

We were never meant to escape. This all was a ploy. Fedorov's betrayal, Selena and Kilija's project, GOLAN. All of it! Just an elaborate game to keep us on the planet!

They sought to have us fight among ourselves with Project ESCAPE as the prize, the winner thinking they had won salvation for themselves. But not knowing that the prize was never intended to work.

Yes that's right. Project ESCAPE was never meant to work. It was all a ploy from those that left us behind. Of course what they didn't count on was us uniting. And another AI usurping GOLAN and taking from it, the last bit of knowledge needed to make the teleporter work. They figured our history of animosity and hatred combined with our impending doom would have us fight each other to the end like rabid animals. They did not foresee that the apocalypse would give us strength. The strength to resist their plan.

I do not know why our people betrayed us and set up this...this charade for us to all act out.

But I do know one thing. United Earth is going to leave Earth...and we are going to make them pay for what they did to us. You can count on that!

That is a great idea, but unfortunately you don't have access to building grabbers. It's a real shame that Lost Souls ends up tossing out a lot of the more creative ways to beat missions. Using tunnels, Unit Transporters, WMDs, etc. None of those are available it's just "throw your giant army at their giant army and see who wins." Which is sad, because there were some really clever missions like the one where you can't do any resupply because of the wind.

The whole final mission is just a complete slog to play through. It's not as hard as the ED mission where you have to capture the Spaceport but it's way more tedious because there is so much you need to destroy. It took me a few tries to actually figure out how to actually beat the drat thing, but once I did it was just hours of me microing units and making sure everything died fast enough.

Thanks for reading along!

Wooo, victory! The last level falls and the final game in the trilogy ends. Axeil, you must have the patience of a saint to tackle these last missions. It looks like the canon ending was all wooo myssstery so I'm glad you wrote a better one :D

Any chance of a multiplayer match to show a few things off? There are units and concepts that are never used in single-player (strangely, too - you'd think the new naval units alone would have been perfect for a mission).

Hmmm. It's not a bad idea. I'd need a group of people to play with and we'd need to coordinate times though. Maybe some time next week?

Hail all those who are able,
any mouse can,
any mouse will,
but the Guard prevail.

Man, that last mission sounds so frustrating. A resource cap and a time limit and vital AI partners.

Congratulations on seeing it all through though.

Not as strong as you'd expect.
You're a decent enough story-teller. All that stuff about him being GOLAN...unless...how much stuff did you actually make up?
