In practice, the unit lights are very useful for helping you pick them out from the landscape. E2150 is one of the few games where camo and not using lights at night can actually be worth something!

Turning your lights off at night can be extremely useful. Your units will be really, really slow, but you can set up pretty good ambushes if you make sure to park your units somewhere they won't be illuminated by enemy troops. Just wait for them to get in range, maybe turn their flanks towards you, and LIGHTS ON, PARTY TIME! :black101:

Now seems to be the best time to thank axeil for this LP; the page is starting to get painful to load.

Despite playing Dune, Command & Conquer, and loads of other not-Starcraft also-rans, I had never heard of this game before. The more realistic terrain and unit coloring is quite different, but it does make it harder to follow what's happening, particularly in screenshots. Boy am I glad I'm not playing these last missions, they look like quite a slog.

Haha thank you. I wish there was a way to collapse updates since I know they can get pretty meaty. But now we're on a new page so I suppose that won't be as much of an issue.

The lighting system really is one of the great selling points of the game. I think back during the UCS campaign in the base game I did a bunch of stealth attacks by keeping the lights off on my air units. Now with the enemy bases so built up they're not as much use though.

From the Diary of General Fedorov - Commander of the Mobile Commandos posted:

September 22nd 2150,

I cannot believe it. The General Command intends to leave the planet without us. Worse, most of them are already in orbit, laughing as we struggle to survive on this dying rock. Thank whatever god is out there that General Ivanov has survived. He and I have been pouring over all the documents we can find, trying to figure out a way to get off this planet. And I think we've found a way. Like every war ever fought, the key to victory comes down to supplies and logistics. We will choke off the General Command and while they wither and starve we will be able to strike!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1Bx7HihPrM

rest of the briefing posted:

General Ivanov: The General Command has its fields near a dam. We would only need to destroy it...

General Fedorov: I like that! Let's start with the preparations. I think two loads of TNT, one on each side of the dam, no?

General Ivanov: Yes, but I think you should have more than just the bare minimum, in case of loss through an attack by the General Command.

Whoa. When Ivanov and Fedorov get pissed off they don't mess around. We're headed for a dam that's located upriver of a large set of farms that will provide the General Command enough food to last them through the trip to Mars. Our goal is to destroy that dam and ensure they will not be able to leave. The defenses should be rather light, I doubt the General Command has invested too much into protecting their soft supply lines.

Our starting situation is actually pretty good for once. We have a massive mining operation going and we have the high ground. There's a lack of defenses, but I can solve that rather quickly. The first order of business though is getting some mobile units on the field.

We're exposed here in the northwestern part of the base, but with tree cover and our mobile units we won't be needing defensive installations like we've used in the past.

We'll have to hit both sides of the dam. I think our side makes the most sense for a first strike, so I'm having our scouts map out the area.

:stare:

There's no way. That's not possible. The AI can't be as clever as me!

The General Command has finally deployed mobile artillery. We are so, so screwed.

I send in my Thors to try and knock them out before they get in range. Too bad the GC is smarter than I give them credit for and sent along some anti-air escorts.

This means I'm going to need to bring the whole army to bear. These artillery units are almost in range of the base!

The fighting is brutal, with shells falling everywhere. Thankfully, our superior numbers have ensured our victor-

-Oh you have got to be kidding me. As if Khrushchevs weren't bad enough, now they're sending URALS after me. URALS! With an artillery cannon on one side and heavy lasers on the other. How come I never thought of that!?

One Thor is not gonna be able to stop them. The rest of the army is already in range of the enemy's artillery. I only hope we can get some units close enough to fire.

A HAN ATTACK TOO!? :psypop: This is absurd.

Let it be known, for the first time in basically this entire LP I am completely getting my rear end kicked right now.

We've managed to take out the Urals but those Hans are still going to town on the base.

Our static defenses are a smouldering ruin and our mining base is under direct assault. Our only hope is that the Hans stay in range of the rockets on all the mines.

Whew. We lost basically our entire ground army but we've finally pushed back the GC...

You motherfuckers

And there are even more coming. I better get my LZ rebuilt real quick or this is going to be a very short update.

This solitary tank is all that stands between us and utter bombardment. Maybe he'll be able to avert it?

Pictured: utter bombardment with a side helping of ineffectual air support.

I've got around 8 or so Thors. They are the only thing that can prevent the failure of this mission.

And now there's another Han attack too :suicide:

Holy crap, we, we might actually pull through. We're taking losses but they haven't shut down the mines yet and the LZ is functional. Get your rear end over here Ukraine!

But just like that, the GC sends a bunch of Ion Cannon tanks over the bridge at the north and they start disabling everything.

Stop stealing all my best moves! :argh:

Just as the Ion Cannons are about to open fire on the VPCs and the heart of the base the Ukraine finally shows up. Tanks spill out and we're able to beat back the attackers.

The rest we can mop up with the air force and static defenses.

Holy poo poo. I have never, ever seen anything like that. That was some really fierce fighting. My forces are crippled and I don't think we can withstand another attack, especially not if we have to defend in two directions at once.

That's why I'm cutting off our access to the western bank of the reservoir. It'll make getting the TNT in place a pain but without doing this the TNT itself might not survive.

More GC artillery and tanks have attacked from the south. We're still taking losses but at least we're not losing ground anymore.

And our beleaguered towers are able to take care of any units that slip past us. Of course the reason they were able to slip past is because the bridges weren't all destroyed, which is why you can see 5 Thors shooting rockets at an off-screen bridge.

The constant attacks from the south have removed all the tree cover. With the trees gone, this cliff seems the perfect place to put a line of towers. If I do it right I can neutralize the Hans before they gain the altitude necessary to attack.

There we go! Now we can ignore the Han attacks (hopefully).

With the airspace sort of cleared up I'm able to sneak a scout down to the dam itself. What a fool I am! The western bank looks like it's fairly vulnerable. With the bridges cut we'll have to fight our way through whatever is on the eastern bank. drat!

At least the dam itself is free from defenses.

I'd say the combination of a reinforced army and those towers has the Hans taken care of. We've gone from a small flotilla buzzing about our base to a single copter actually making it near the army. Now I think is the time to try and move forward.

We run into more artillery and oh god drat it another Minelayer. That would explain why my tanks keep randomly self-destructing. :sigh:

Now we have to sit here and wait for the Minelayer to defuse everything. And the GC has mined the whole drat path to the base. This is going to be slow going.

GC: 1, Minelayers: 0. This is why we don't have our minelayers run to far ahead of the main army. But at least we were able to get a look at their defensive lineup. Seems like it's as vulnerable to artillery fire as it usually is.

The shoreline towers we built are doing an admirable job. I've yet to see a Han even make it near the base, much less do any substantial damage.

More exciting mine clearing action coming at ya!

With the mines almost clear the GC makes a move I do not understand in any way. Why the hell would they send a single Siberia L at us? Especially when they've been sending wave after wave of terrifying artillery tanks.

Hooray! All the mines are gone, I'm sure we'll never have to clear another minefield again in this mission!

A frontal assault would be suicide, right? Eh, the men are bored let's see what happens.

Oh poo poo they still have artillery.

Welp. Nothing good happened. Unless "losing 2/3rds of your army" is good these days. We didn't even dent the defenses.

Right then, I'm sick of this. Time for a taste of their own medicine. Their own artillery-flavored medicine.

Yeah this is working way better.

Not that the GC doesn't try to fight back...

But with their own artillery finally silenced there's nothing they can do to stop the barrage of shells.

I didn't even realize we had the high ground until I swung the camera around to point the other way. No wonder we're hitting everything.

With all but two of the factories gone I don't think we have to worry about the artillery any more this mission.

The GC attempts a Han counter-attack in the morning fog but it's easily repelled.

Another minelayer? Aw poo poo. That means more mines.

The GC finally attempt a counter-attack on the ground but it's far too little.

I hate
hate
hate

mines!

I also really hate when I'm a dumbass and put my minelayer in range of enemy defenses. :ughh:

Let's try that again.

With the mines cleared we can begin our final push to the dam.

Yeah, not so tough now when your mines and artillery and other bullshit is gone now are ya!

The target zones for the TNT are secure but we'll need to take out the second GC base if we're going to be able to successfully detonate the explosives.

Fortunately this base is even more exposed to artillery fire.

Yep, we're just gonna hang out and lob shells at you all day when you can't fight back.

In the mean time, there's no reason we can't move up the TNT.

Yep, don't mind us just doing some house cleaning.

With lasers.

Haha! Now you guys show up. The base is gone you idiots! Why were you just hanging out on this side of the map while your comrades burned? See, this is why we're so much smarter than the General Command: we callously sacrifice our soldiers before the battle is hopeless.

Your sacrifice means absolutely nothing and you should honestly be a bit embarrassed that you carried out your orders.

Once these mines are destroyed we'll be clear to plant the explosives.

Move all three units into position. What do you mean there's only two units now? Mines? I THOUGHT WE GOT THEM ALL!

:argh: MINESSSSSSSSSSSS

Thankfully two TNT trucks are enough to beat the mission. And because I actually like most of my units I have my Gruz rebuild one of the bridges, allowing them all to make it back here once the dam is blown.

Of course most of them just run back along the dam anyway, despite it now being rigged with high explosives.

Okay everybody clear? Great! Let's blow this thing!

Yeah! Let's do it!

Oh come on! We go through all that work and you're not even gonna show us blowing up the dam? Not even a cutscene? For shame Lost Souls. For shame.

September 24th 2150,

Huzzah The dam has been destroyed! This will force the General Command to delay the launch of the evacuation shuttles by quite a bit. We haven't captured them yet, but this delay will give us enough time to form a strategy. General Ivanov has indicated he has some news for me so I will speak with him later today.

If this intel from Ivanov is right then the General Command is headed right for us. Why bother? This doesn't make sense...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UArZSFwyfKU

rest of the briefing posted:

General Ivanov: Yes, I think so too. And I'm asking myself if there was more than just a food production system here...

General Fedorov: You think something is down there that they want to get their hands on? Perhaps we should send divers down.

General Ivanov: Already done Comrade General. But the divers will need some time to search through all the wreckage. Maybe 4 days?

General Fedorov: Then we'll need to prepare to receiving the General Command counter-assault.

General Ivanov is a little optimistic here. We actually need to hold the dam for 104 hours, or 4.25 days. Fortunately we have a lot of what we had in the previous mission. And there's been some additional construction. The two generals now hold a total of four bases around the dam, 2 on each side of the drained basin.

One in the northwest. This is the weakest of the three with no solid walls, tanks nor any real non-tank production infrastructure. It'll be no more than a speed bump in a true battle, but I hope we can make it as big of a speed bump as we can.

There's one in the southwest. This is moderately more armed than the first, but it has large gaps in its walls and no static defenses. Fortunately with the dam destroyed it's no longer an access point across the basin. Of course, this means that, unlike the other bases this one is isolated. It'll be very hard to move in anything once the battle starts going. On the plus side, we do have some tanks.

Our third base sits right across the destroyed dam from the 2nd, in the southeast corner. This is what Fedorov and Ivanov built in the ruins of that giant mine-filled base that caused us so many problems last mission. We've been unable to replant the mines but the base boasts a full compliment of tanks, towers and a full mining complex. Due to the nature of enemy attacks (the GC has been spotted coming from the west) this is likely where we'll need to make our last stand.

Finally we have our main base in the northwest, the same spot we started last mission. The Generals have really built it up and it's going to be our economic backbone. So long as we get some defenses up and cannons mounted this base can hold its own without even needing to call upon its ample reserve of tanks.

Oh and one more thing. No reinforcements. We'll live or die on this map.

You also might notice that a lot of these screenshots have been taken while in pause mode. I've started doing this because of how quickly these missions ramp up. There's no longer time to sit idle and show things.

Okay, let's start the clock running. We've got 104 hours to go and our first order of business is putting guns on all these Weapon Production Centers. Again, it's not going to be much against a whole battalion of Urals and Khrushchevs but it'll slow them down enough that we can prepare for the assault at the main base.

Speaking of the main base, someone has dismantled the defenses we placed to our south last mission. I'm going to need to do some funneling to the front of the base so rather than building towers or pillboxes I'm just going to close off the south of the base. This will force any enemy attack to go the long way around and into the teeth of the base.

2 hours in and we have our first encounter. The GC moved south, rather than north. An interesting call. Perhaps they want to destroy this base so they can establish their own?

Fighting is brutal but with our tanks using conventional arms and the GC using energy weapons the odds are tilted slightly in our favor.

Those odds tilt even further when we relocate the engagement within range of the WPCs' guns.

We take moderate losses amongst the tanks and also lose 2 WPCs but it's not too bad an opening.

If the GC is going to focus on the southern base we'll need quicker resupply, so I build a Supply Depot on the other bank of the drained basin.

Meanwhile, the northwestern base is still woefully under-defended. To remedy that I spit out a few Khrushchevs.

The main base's southern wall is complete.

If this is to be where we finally retreat we'll need to ensure the walls are rebuilt. Again, we'll be trying to funnel the enemy into a specified area just as we did up top.

The WPCs are ready for whatever the GC may throw at us.

And our mighty army of 4 Khrushchevs are ready to give us warning of any enemy attack...and then die very quickly. They're our canary in the coal mine so to speak.

Ah this is familiar. Once again these Thors are going to be eviscerated by our heavy rockets.

And our canary base has come under attack.

The tanks don't last very long but at least they've manged to take out one or two of the enemy Urals.

Back at the main base we've finished off the aerial attack.

Oh poo poo. The GC are ignoring the rest of our northwestern base. They must realize it's only meant to slow them down.

Quick! Build more defenses!

And who the hell rebuilt those bridges? Tear them down!

Whew. Now we should be able to keep the enemy on the western bank.

Or we should, except the water in the basin has all flooded out, giving the enemy a very convenient non-bridge land route. Quick! Fill it in with walls!

More Thors

:drat: We finished just in time. The Gruz came under heavy laser attack but was able to get away. Now the enemy should be stuck on the opposite shore.

Of course there might be another path over...

Oh good! Looks like there isn't another path.

More Thors. These attacks all go the same way so I'm going to stop informing everyone about them. Just assume every 6 in-game hours or so more helicopter pilots fly to their doom.

And things are going rather nice in the-

What the gently caress? How did we get GC troops inside the southeastern base? Did they come from the east?

Oh gently caress me. There is another way across. Unfortunately it spits the enemy right out in the middle of our southeastern base.

By the time I realize what's going on it's already too late. We can't spare the tanks to retake the base.

Well...maybe the UCS will help us out? Ya know, kill all the GC tanks and then just let us do the mop up.

The GC tanks have paused here in the hills. I'm not sure what they're doing but maybe they're getting ready to engage the UCS.

Regardless of what the GC is doing I need to get something in place fast or they'll overrun us. Walls have worked well so far, so we might as well stick with it. A solid wall across the southern entrance to the base should do nicely.

And another wall here on the beach.

One last one. We'll need a wall along these cliffs so the UCS doesn't try to scale them.

More GC tanks. Our base in the southeast is still standing but it's just a matter of time now.

The best endorsement I can get for my walls: the other Gruz is stuck on the wrong side and can't figure out a way to get over.

:sigh: Looks like the UCS are using cloaked units. As if this wasn't hard enough already.

Goodbye southeastern base! You were, uh, not really all that helpful actually. Sorry we didn't get to use you for our last stand.

In a bit of good news we only need to hold out for another 2 days. More than halfway there already!

The GC have disabled the last tower on the northwestern base. It's not as dead as the southeastern one yet but it's pretty close.

The northeastern and southwestern bases are still doing okay though. I have no idea why the GC hasn't tried attacking the southwestern one again.

Hah! Yeah that's right you run away. Too bad you didn't bring any Gruzes with you to rebuild these bridges. Not that we'd let you anyway.

With just over 40 hours left here's what things look like from the top of the main base in the northwest. Aren't those walls lovely? :allears:

I wonder if the GC knows that lasers don't work all that well on buildings...

See I don't know what the GC is trying to do standing across from the former bridges like that. They're not going to magically rebuild themselves.

Wait a second, what's going on over on the walls?

Oh no you don't! You do not get to shoot at my walls. That is against the rules. :commissar:

One of the GC units thinks he's sneaky sauntering up and shooting our walls like that. Good thing he can't get in.

Unfortunately I guess he told all his buddies because now they're pouring in :gonk:

There have to be at least a hundred missiles flying in this screenshot. Our walls didn't keep the GC out entirely but they funneled them right into this kill zone.

We're barely taking any damage. Meanwhile the GC Urals are melting before they even get into firing range.

Huh well look at that. I guess the General Command aren't a bunch of idiots. They're going to try and breach the walls here so they can sneak into our rear. Clever.

Or they could just walk right back to where all our defenses are. :downs:

This amount of laser power would be impressive if we weren't obliterating them with our missile before they could overheat anyone.

1 day to go and we're looking pretty good. Our walls may have been breached but we've got enough healthy tanks that we can repulse any attack.

And we can rebuild :getin:

Good luck breaking through that before our divers get back.

Whoa! The GC has remembered that the southwestern base exists. If the attack is anything like the last one this is probably it for our last base on the west bank of the basin.

Wait a sec, are they retreating?

Holy poo poo are we winning?

Yes! We won! I have no idea how we won that battle, but good on you little tanks! Now hurry up and get back inside the walls so I can rebuild them.

Just in time too. That looks like a much more serious enemy force, but they're completely ignoring the southeastern base. They should be hitting us soon so everyone brace yourself.

:siren: WARNING SOUTHERN WALL BREACHED :siren:

Southern wall eh? I guess they got here faster than I-

:stare:

Well gently caress.

I want every single one of you shooting at these UCS Panthers and Jaguars. I do not care if you hit each other or any buildings, I want them dead. Do you hear me?

12 hours to go and I'm not so sure we're going to be able to make it. Panther Ps in your base usually has a bad outcome.

They just keep on coming. We've been fighting them for 2 in-game hours now.

Some of the Jaguars are also carrying the UCS stealth system, making them hard to spot before they're right on top of us. Fortunately I have some Radar in the rear, but without that we'd be fighting totally blind.

Not that fighting while seeing is helping all that much...

The battle has gone on for 4 in-game hours now and the UCS show no signs of slowing, which is a bit concerning given that I'm starting to run out of shells and tanks.

Is that the last one? I think it is.

drat. That attack was rough. Our army has shrunk to less than half of what we started with and our walls are in ruins. Let's rebuild them one last time, we only have 7 hours to go.

Uh, why did our Gruz just explode?

poo poo poo poo poo poo. The GC must've been waiting for the UCS to clear out before starting their assault. Now we have them in the rear of our base too. This is gonna be close.

The UCS too!? What the hell is going on here. Are the General Command and UCS working together? This all makes no sense.

Something is definitely up. They're ignoring the GC units entirely and going straight for us. This...is troubling. Could NEO have survived? Could these be his units?

The last of the UCS Jaguars has fallen. I'm amazed the southeastern base has lasted this long but we're going to need every last Dynasty soldier here in case there's one more push.

With only 1 hour to go I'm guessing the GC/UCS won't be able to manage much. So even if these units aren't needed at least they'll be able to evacuate with the rest of the army and tell tales of how they were only attacked twice all mission.

rest of the briefing posted:

General Fedorov: Good, we'll stop this current attack and get out of this place.

So fun fact for this mission. It doesn't say it anywhere but you need to kill every enemy unit that's on the map for the mission to actually end. This isn't in your Goals tab nor is it explicitly stated anywhere. I spent a good chunk of time wandering around the map looking for any stragglers.

I'm honestly pretty happy with this 3:1 kill to death ratio. Especially when you throw in those UCS robots throwing 120 Jaguar and Panther plasma units at us. Trust me, this mission wasn't nearly as easy as I made it look from the screenshots.

The Generals notice an important ED base has been left undefended in China. A very important ED base. With rockets in it. :getin:

So having spent the last 3 hours (yes, really) playing through the mission I have an eye-popping 150+ screenshots.

The mission is absolutely frantic and I'm not sure how much of it I can cut down. Usually I can trim out 20% or so of the screenshots but this time I'm not too sure. Plus, this is the climax of the entire Dynasty campaign and I don't want to deprive you all of seeing how absolutely bonkers this mission is. Forget what I said about it being "one of" the hardest missions in the game. After replaying it I can say with confidence that it is, by far, the hardest mission in the game.

So I'll leave it to you folks:

1) Post it all as one update.

2) Split it into two updates. There's a fairly natural dividing point so it wouldn't be too awkward.

Hehe, I posted about this particular build before. It's a hell of a surprise for people who expect lasers to be useless against buildings.

Tomorrow, doom!
But now, tea.
Do the split. This thread already struggles with screenshot-heavy updates. Perhaps have a look at the C&C LP and see how that guy does it?

Oh, how does he do it? I'm sympathetic to browsers making GBS threads themselves when we've got multiple updates on each page.

Simply post a link to the update on baldurk's screenshot test post site. Baldurk himself has said that it's only a tiny bit of html code per update on the server so he won't delete any of the posts ever, pretty much.

Okay let's try this off-site screenshot posting thing so our browsers don't crash.

From the Diary of General Fedorov - Commander of the Mobile Commandos posted:

September 28th 2150,

I never would've thought the ED had stolen UCS stealth technology. This is a troubling finding. And the UCS seeming to ignore the General Command is even more disturbing. What is happening?

Of course these questions are of no matter to me right now. Due to the events at the dam, the GC have moved units in to continue the investigation. While they're en route there will be a brief window where the rocket launching pads in China will be at less than full strength. We must strike now! We may not get another opportunity. Our whole campaign comes down to this. Succeed, and we'll have secured our spots off Earth. Fail, and we're doomed to die here.

Alright, that was a pretty neat mechanics reveal. The entire point of stealth, in fact!

When we last left our heroes they were between a rock and a hard place, cut off from reinforcements and with cloaked units heading their way. Let's pick back up right where we left off.

Wow, this was seriously intense. I always remembered this game as pretty sedate (at least compared to other RTSes) so I love the change of pace.

Yeah I got insanely lucky there near the end with most of my artillery surviving and being able to wipe out any attack before it got going.

If you don't do it within the time limit I believe it's a mission failure (or at least I got the failure screen the one time I was testing and didn't make it). The mission wouldn't be so bad but with infinite spawning enemies and a time limit it's just absolute hell. I cannot even think of a way to do it without using comical amounts of artillery.

And, just for an extra kick in the nuts, it turns out to be totally pointless. Gotta love that sadism from the developers!

Update coming tomorrow or Tuesday. I've played through the mission but some stuff came up and I won't be able to get to it tonight (and possibly not tomorrow).

Sorry folks!

edit: well that took longer than I thought. Sorry folks. New update's right below this post.

From the Diary of General Ivanov posted:

October 3rd 2150,

I found Fedorov with a gun in his mouth this morning.

I'm not sure I can blame him, last night was brutal; nearly a third of the men shot themselves overnight, unwilling to go on. But when I saw him like that, tears streaming down his face, blaming himself for our predicament...

I wish I could've let him find his peace. But I can't. I can't watch my friend die like that. I had to do something to save him.

So I did.

I told him the secret I'd been keeping. That I'd seen Lunar Corporation activity in Europe for a few weeks now, but hadn't mentioned it. Why bother? Their ship left weeks ago, and no one has seen them since. We've been getting many strange transmissions since the evacuation ships started leaving and I thought nothing of it. Presumably it's the fleets coordinating with each other and we're just picking up the echos due to our proximity. As time goes on, they'll become fainter, although we'll be long dead by the time they go completely silent. And the Lunar Corporation, peace lovers that they are, would never leave their own behind to die on this doomed rock. I assumed it had to be one of these echos.

But now? Now it's our only chance.

It was hard to talk Fedorov down, but this tale seemed to do the trick. He did made me promise that if we found nothing I'd kill him myself. I agreed. It's the least I could do for an old friend.

Truth be told, I don't really think we're going to find anything, but I can't let on about my doubts. The only things holding the men together right now are Fedorov and myself, and with Fedorov in such a state the burden falls squarely on my shoulders.

God, if you're listening now would be a good time for a miracle.
