This car looks like a Corvette C7 and Mazda RX7 made sweet love after a night of binge drinking and then had a baby. Which is something that I am perfectly fine with as an owner of the former and a wanna-be owner of the latter. This thing better have some power and rev to eight billion RPM though.

What the gently caress Mazda, this is the second clutch pedal bracket that has snapped in a year. JB Weld better hold it together until the properly welded unit from BHR shows up. I wonder if someone at Mazda USA could find out which engineer designed that thing...and get me their name. So I can pay them a visit. Bet it's the same guy who decided to re-design the apex seals as well.

Goddammit Mazda, why do you tease us so? I love Mazda and will always go to bat for them, but I got to say, the market's been waiting for a high-performance rotary replacement since 1994/2011 (choose your own adventure, RADL goons), and at least for me, it's been a lot like being a Dodger fan: "Things are looking up! While I admire the series 1-2 rx7, it was a cramped hatchback. While I admire the FD, it was too expensive. Hell, I've been waiting longer than 94/2011. The older series were lighter and had a useful rear seat. If I wanted no rear seat I'd buy a ute. I've been in the back seat of every older RX model as a passenger and wasn't cramped. I mainly bought rx3 sedans and rx4 coupes, mates had rx5s, rx2s. I haven't been in the back of an actual r100, but a mate's girlfriend had a mazda 1300 which is the same body-shell and I could sit back there. (We were all about mazdas back then, getting family, friends and girlfriends to buy mazdas. I even got my girlfriend to buy a mazda 323 after she wrote off her mk2 escort ghia - that went out in style when she rolled escort). I've helped mates buy rx7s previously, but back then they were bottomed out in the market and only ~$1k, while the older rxs were ~$2k+ and more my thing. The rx8 chassis and design for a usable rear was perfect, doing the same suicide doors like their trucks, shame about the motor in it though. I guess what I'm saying is even if they were cheap, I'd probably never buy an rx7 or this new car if it comes out looking like the concept. My wife and I have been shopping around for an RX-8 after she test drove one and really liked it. There is an absolute astounding number of these cars from 04 and 05 up for sale for a song and a dance, usually right about at 100,000 miles. I know these two model years in particular have been problematic, but if we find one that has the ECU updated and good compression with a manual transmission, how reliable is it likely to be? Also how difficult is it to rebuild one of these engines? Ive been looking around for a guide of some sort with pretty limited luck, getting them out of the car seems comparatively simple but I cant find much information beyond that. Also is there a particular go to site to buy things like rebuild kits, ignition stuff and other general parts? For our E39 Pelican Parts has become our go to, do RX8s have a similar retailers?

Mazdatrix, Racing Beat, Atkins Rotary, Pineapple Racing, Goopy Performance, many Australian and NZ shops, many small Japanese shops. There are quite a few places out there, but due to the specialized nature and small pool of vehicles / enthusiasts, the economies of scale really aren't in our favour price wise. That being said, now is for sure the time to be into rotaries because there has been gradual growth since the 70's so it's not that bad now. I'm sure the spyder and the other rotary goons who have been in this game longer than I have and have some financial skin in the game regarding services, etc will also chime in and correct me on a few things.
