Maybe add to the OP that (for Gamersgate at least - I don't have a steam version) you download and activate CK2 DLC from within the game. You don't download it from Gamersgate. I spent a while trying to figure out why my DLC was not appearing because of that.

There's three factions, the eunuchs, the temple and the bureaucrats and depending who has the most influence in court you can't do certain things. For example you can only declare war if the temple faction is in charge and you can only send colonists if the eunuchs are in charge.

Has there been any word on if this is going to be in EU4? I sincerely hope not, or at least I hope they do something to make it interesting to play, like letting you do missions for each faction even if that faction is not in power. Some kind of agency in changing factions rather than just waiting for a bar to fill up would go a long way.

Agreed, PoN was chock full of great ideas with poor execution, good to see some of them being fleshed out. Although it would have been even better if they had redone the horrible confusing card game interface from PoN and made it a straight up CCG mini-game.

Do you know of any other good alt-history ideas? I'd like to see some that are actually well thought-out (and I'd loving love it if they didn't involve either of the World Wars in some way).

Shafer has an interview with Tom Chick on Qt3 this week and he talks about all the barbarian tribes being different - some like the Huns can't even own non-movable possessions like farms - and the Romans are unplayable. But they slowly decline through battles between the Eastern and Western emperors, or having child emperors etc, and you have to pick your time when to attack them. Although that means you don't get any more tech off them either. Sounds really cool.

E: Also, random thing I hope we see in a future Victoria 2 patch/expansion/whatever is more local names for parties. I remember in a game as Krakow, I had 1 party with a non-generic name (the conservative Catholic Party) and then the rest were generic names, but when I refounded Poland, all the parties just had their generic names like "Conservative party", "Socialist party", etc. I'd gladly pay money for (an) expansion(s) that add more local names, so like I pay $5 or something and now my Polish Fascist party is called the White Eagle Society or something.

The thing I always ask for in every V2 addition conversation is company names. Call factories 'the Paris Glass Co.' or the 'New York Machine Parts Co.'. This was the time of great corporate innovation in limited liability companies, it would be great to see that reflected a bit more.

It's an issue of personal taste, but I'd prefer a game more focused on politics and diplomacy to model the Cold War. The map isn't really big enough to satisfactorily model most conflicts during that era down to the level that I think they'd demand in a war sim, so I'd prefer it if they abstracted military matters a bit more, like in Vicky, and focused more on soft power, because right now the game's looking like AoD with a lot of downtime between conflicts.

If it can model 'Nixon goes to China' where you can open back door channels and have choices to do things like 'drawdown troops from Taiwan' for example to boost a target nation's favourability, and then as a result of that the target country will distance itself from an old alliance to be more favourable to you, then the game will be an unqualified success.

I've just started playing EUIII, and I'm having one hell of a time trying to keep any sort of balanced budget. It seems like I'm always in a downward spiral of debt and eventual bankruptcy due to loan payments. Can anyone clue me in on the basics? I'm rather new to Paradox games and my only substantial experience is with CKII, so I haven't the faintest what I'm really doing here. A bit of advice about how the $ works would be lovely.

Try to avoid loans (or more than one at a time) in the early game. That cash injection seems awesome, and the payments are so small and it's not due for ages, but don't be fooled, it is a real bastard.

Have short splurges of inflation instead and don't freak if it gets up to 10% or 15%. Just make sure you get the Bank as an early NI and you can start reducing inflation again gradually.

PROTIP: If you have the 'you're going to be broke at the end of the year' message, wait until December to jack your minting up far enough to get into positive territory. On 1 January move minting back down again. Better to get a small inflation hit for one month than be forced to take out a loan.

If your stability is negative, focus on getting it back to +3 asap. That will bring in more $.

Don't waste money auto-sending merchants. If you're scraping for cash, that can be a real hit.

Quickly seeds and ideas take root in the purging flames, and blossom following the devastation. Ash and decay rapidly turns into a fauna of diversity but also one of tense competition. Will you be able to adapt and take control or will you just be another witness to a freshly burning world?

Nothing like adverbs, mixed tenses and awkward metaphors to clearly and concisely explain a new game.
