Maybe if I called it 'Interpretive Stabbing'...

quote:

This always struck me as such a weird line (also: I always remember it happening during the ending, not here), but I like it a lot and I dunno why. It says a huge amount about Lucia and what her life must have been like between Suikoden II and III, I guess, and speaks to a level of understanding that's just sorta amazing I guess. Like... "I don't know Zexen or your knights, but I still know you. I hope you'll realize you know me as well". Hard to explain.

Sarah is a bitch of a fight, as everyone has noted. I had a run once where I cleared out all her support right away... but she never moved from her start position, meaning she was actually against the 'wall' of the fight area and only three of my fighters could get to her. They of course were my least ACCURATE fighters and the fight lasted many more turns. I don't even remember if I won it.

I don't remember having nearly as much trouble with Sarah as I did with Yuber, and I'm pretty sure I didn't silence her either.

I dunno, it feels like whatever they came up with to explain Jeane at this point would seem underwhelming.

Could definitely have done with a reveal of the remaining runes, though. And a game where Leknaat is the villain so I could finally beat her up.

YUP. I really wish we could get a new Suikoden game, because the series is so good and made with so much love, but it's not happening. I think I'd be upset if Konami did try to make a new one, too, though. Because I know it wouldn't be very good.

The problem is that Sarah's fight is finnicky. On my main run, I didn't really have any trouble with her, and I don't think I had much of a problem last time I played, but then on my other save files she decided to be absolutely horrendous. With Yuber, you know what you're getting into -- it's going to be fairly difficult. With Sarah, she can range between being not too bad or absolutely ridiculous.

I still maintain that the most difficult fight in the game was that fight against Borus as Geddoe, like a billion years ago.

Chapter 5.9 - Take Back True Water - feat. Hugo

Again, this section of the dungeon has a Hugo version as an alternate, if he has the True Water Rune.

His intro scene is pretty similar to the one he had for True Lightning, but it is different. Which is interesting because, like a lot of the alternate scenes and nice touches, who the gently caress would have noticed if it had just been the same?

I really like Caesar's smarmy looking face right here.

: "Yeah, I will. I've come too far to give up now."

: "You're making fun of me again."

I like this line in conjunction with the Lulu scene better than the one we got in the True Lightning version. It just feels better.

: "That's enough. Please choose your party members. Time's running out!"

This is the place where I'd pick my party, but it doesn't matter at all, so let's just keep this going.

After this would be the Lulu scene, but we just saw that, and it hasn't changed.

From there, we'd explore the path. It also hasn't changed, so I'll skip straight to Sarah.

And here she is.

: "You won't stop interfering with Master Luc, will you?"

Okay, guys, we've got her outnumbered.

Uhhh? Okay. I guess that's true.

: "To live is not a sin, but to remain ignorant is."

I really like this scene, actually, and it's a shame that you're not likely to see it because who in their right minds picks Chris as their Flame Champion. Hugo is a really good kid, and this conversation does a really good job of illustrating not only that he's a good person, but that he's still got some of that childish simplicity and sincerity in him.

Camera angle.

:haw:

So, as a whole, the fight with Sarah is a little less annoying as Hugo, mainly because you can basically point him at anything on the field except her, and he's pretty likely to be able to take them down in one turn as long as he's riding Fubar. The mounted damage boost, combined with his high crit chance, means he is really useful. On the flip side, Sarah seems to cast her super spells more often against him for some reason?

Anyway, the fight isn't too different, so I will sum it up for you instead. Because I learned something very important in this fight.

There's a peculiarity with the Jongleur Rune when combined with silence/magic dissolved status effects.

Brief recap since I wasn't screen-capping from the start, I had her start chanting a song, and then Joe used Silent Lake on the same turn. She's a bit faster than him, so she completed her cast before he did. He's a bit faster than whatever spell Sarah had been planning on using, so she wasn't able to cast. Also, the Azzodess further silenced her and Joe after that all went down.

Next turn, though, it let me continue Nei's chant, in spite of her having both silent status effects stacked on her. Because she cast it before the status effect, maybe? Either way, very useful. Obviously, can't change whatever song she'd been singing, but still.

It's a neat trick, but only lasts for that one turn. Next turn, her chanting stopped and the silence kicked in. Still, very interesting and potentially very helpful.

Nothing else of note happened, so we'll just move along.

Hugo seems a lot more out of breath than Chris was after the fight.

: "Please forgive me, Master Luc. I was not strong enough."

It doesn't come across very well in screen shots, but he's basically staggering towards her, as opposed to Chris' confident walking.

He trudges closer to her again, still panting.

: "I would do anything for Master Luc..."

And this is where the scene becomes pretty different from the Chris version.

Rather than lecture her or argue, he just looks really sad.

Portrait change.

And that's it.

No more fighting, no knocking her unconscious. Just a talk. A really sincere talk between them. I wish we got to see more of it.

And then she relinquishes the rune to Hugo.

I still want to know what the thought process behind Tierkries was. Why on earth would you take a series that's known and beloved for its continuity and connections between games (returning characters, nods to important events, etc.) and then set it in an alternate universe with absolutely NO connection to anything before it? I just can't understand how anyone thought this was a good idea.

After reading some of the stuff with Tierkries (and with the perspective of an outsider to the series), my only guess is that Konami tried to do a full continuity reboot, but opted to not publicly say it was a reboot in order to avoid fan backlash (much like how the Daniel Craig Bond era is a continuity reboot, but was never explicitly called one when Casino Royale came out). Except that's exactly what happened with the fanbase reaction to the overall game, so good job at failing, Konami!

As long as you don't get hung up on "it's different so it sucks", Tierkreis is not the worst game in the series (unfriendly reminder that IV exists). It's not a good Suikoden game, but it's a decent enough RPG, if you treat it as a different, Outlaws-inspired game.

Hmmm, I gotta say I like the Chris versus Sarah scene better, if only because she literally got to clobber some sense into her. I'm really not liking the fact that if these are the final battles, all of the badguys seem to be getting away or getting off scot-free (which is something I clearly don't remember, seeing as I only played this once years ago.) But then, Hugo's crew wouldn't be goodguys if they took lives right after preaching about how wrong it is.

I'm just venting. I've been loving this whole LP :allears:

Suikoden is one of my favorite series, in fact Suikoden V is the only game I've ever actually played twice in a row. I've never really understood the hate for Tierkries, Sure it's different and is missing some very important traditions like the continuity, but at its core its still entirely about the 108 stars of destiny and has some legitimately great characters and dare I say an enjoyable plot. In fact, I like it just as much as I like 2 and 3. The only major complaint I had about T was that it didnt do cooler things with the multiverse.

Anyway, this LP is one of the reasons I caved and bought an account, so good luck with it. Also Vilk, I'm a fan, It was great fun rediscovering my love of 5 and giving 4 another chance through your LPs. Back to praying for Suikoden 6, complete with character quests for every star.
