Jose Romero aka El Tigre, aka Tagerman Blade, aka Wild Tager

High Concept: King of Braves

Trouble: Sometimes Musashi Has to Die

This is an era of shadow wars and callous compromises- one that does not always sit well in the big heart of Jose Romero. He spends much of his free time and his work time trying to make things better for anyone he can, but it just never seems like enough.

Backstory: The Invincible Steel Man

Jose Romero was one of those kids who just always ends up about twice the size of his peers. Unlike many, he did not fall for the temptation of becoming a bully- Instead he become known as the guy who intimidated bullies into leaving other children alone. As he grew older, he only got bigger- topping out at nearly two meters of height and 115 kilos, making him a wrestling team star. However, defenders of the weak leave a trail of angry enemies behind. Finally, luck caught up to him- an altercation with a gang in high school left 3 people in the hospital and Jose out on the street from an unsympathetic family. Luckily, his size and wrestling training lead to a new career path...

Yomikiri: TRANSFORM! TRUE TIGER GOD!

...As a masked wrestler! Adopted into the Romero wrestling family (his birth name was Soto,) he became the newest member of their wrestling linage, the ferocious EL TIGRE. Initially mistaken for a rudo monster because of his build, it quickly became clear that El Tigre was a champion for JUSTICE and the PEOPLE. El Tigre's idealism and brave stand for Doing the Right thing resonated in an age where such things often seemed distant, and he became very popular. Part of it was that his off-stage behavior carefully matched his on-stage- he donated time and money to charity, helped children, and despite the best efforts of the tabloids was never caught doing anything unseemly. If only they knew what he was up to after that incident...

Volume Three: Tagerman Blade

The incident occurred after a charity event at a children's home- Jose was taking a walk to cool off after a day of carrying children around on the SHOULDERS OF EL TIGRE when he ran, through his own terrible or possibly amazing luck, into a Tager/Dhoanoid struggle in a secluded area of the city- one in which he used to hide as a child. Acting on instinct, he brained the Dhoanoid with a trash can as it lunged at him, allowing the Tager the kill- and giving him an in to the shadowy world of the Eldritch Society. Seeing another way to make the world a better place, he was quick to agree to join, and to become a Tager himself- after all, fighting behind a mask is something he is more than used to!

Now El Tigre hunts on a new warfront as the invincible TAGERMAN BLADE! (One handler has already quit over his refusal to stop calling himself that.)

Zhang San (Formerly Yu Zhong)

High Concept: ACTION HACKER
Trouble: I just wanted a desk job!

Backstory: Fight to Live, Live to Fight
Yu Zhong didn't have a particularly pleasant childhood. Raised rough and tumble on the sharp streets of Shanghai, a city in flux after being partially destroyed by the Storm, Zhong got used to scrabbling for every last crumb of food and pebble of territory. Rapidly falling in with the Triads, Zhong quickly moved up their hierarchy, being tough, smart, and vicious- a combination destined for success in the dark world of organized crime. Soon, he was known as an excellent choice if you wanted someone silenced, permanently. The Yangtze ate his victims, and the nice thing about neo-silk is the blood comes right out. But, somewhere deep down, he was getting tired of killing just so he could kill someone else tomorrow, of fighting for his life by taking others. One day, he just vanished. The Triads assumed his body would surface in the ocean eventually, and got back to daily life.
Invoke: Struggle to live, bail out if things are going badly
Compel: Take a life in cold blood, take the easy way out

Yomikiri: Zhang San's Everyday Life
Some time later, a talented computer programmer named Zhang San was hired to work for one of the OOI's civilian support divisions. (One wonders why he chose that, of all places to get hired- perhaps he wanted just a little bit of danger in his life still.) He seemed happy, but subtly unsatisfied. His superiors noted a certain lack of drive in his actions. Eventually, someone from a more serious part of the OOI noticed the way he was dodging advancement and socializing with his colleagues, and put in a request to evaluate him as a possible mole. Initial investigations turned up only confirmation that he had a degree in Computer Security (With a minor in Art History) from a small but accredited online institution.) Further investigation, however, revealed that the records showing such had been "inserted." To be fair, being good enough to do that was a pretty good way to prove you deserved it.

Curiosity now aroused, further digging quickly uncovered San's disreputable past. Rather than having to deal with a mole, OOI's wetworks division became... intrigued. Soon, an offer was made, with a note that made it clear refusal wasn't an option. Grumbling all the way, San quickly found himself back in the business of killing, though now with a more technological bent to it. At least, he rationalized, it was mostly monsters and monster-creators rather than human beings. And sometimes, someone else would handle the messy bits while he stayed safe in a computer chair, so still an improvement, really.
Invoke: Deal with changing circumstances, quickly refocus
Compel: Get pulled back into a problem, bottle up internal issues

Volume Three: Crouching Tager, Hidden Zhang San
A clash with the Eldritch Society was inevitable. While working with a small team to extract potentially dangerous data from a Duvalle Tech site, San's augmented reality setup inadvertently revealed a stealthed Tager attempting to do the same thing. Thinking Zhang was just a tech, the Tager attacked. Zhang attacked back, scrambling for every advantage. Just like old times. Pretty soon some others came to back him up, and the Tager was forced to flee, but Zhang was annoyed either way. His prowess was now a matter of record: Now he was gonna get the REALLY hard jobs. And then, of course, the Children of Chaos showed up.

To this day he swears he's gonna find that Tager and shoot it.
Invoke: Deal practically with the supernatural
Compel: Shoot first, ask questions while shooting

Skills

Triad Assassin 5
Systems 4, Guns 4
Burglary 3, Stealth 3
Alertness 2, Physique 2, Driving 2
Athletics 1, Weapons 1, Will 1, Provoke 1, Deceit 1

Stunts:
I Work Better Under Pressure: +2 to Systems rolls made under duress
Casing, Investigating, Same Thing: Use Burglary to evaluate scenes instead of Investigation
Assassin's Sixth Sense: +2 to Alertness rolls to detect ambushes
Let's Make an Example Out of You: Once per scene spend a fate point to move an inflicted physical consequence 1 step up.
It Was Always Going to End This Way: +2 damage inflicted on lone opponents

OOI should go to Shanghai, which is a really cool city and also would make Zhang suffer terribly, which is hilarious.

Zhang San in: "You're Invited to a Mythos Family Reunion"

Zhang San gestured at the virtual environment in front of him.
>run FIREBREAK.cth execute target
>NYARLATH devour grep sys

Data streamed steadily into his built-in storage. Data with nasty secrets, barely even encrypted. This would be a godsend for the OOI... assuming he could get it to them.

He was, after all, in an isolated mansion surrounded by vicious horrors in barely human guise.

Zhang mentally shrugged. "Feels like Shanghai."

>DAG.on run away....

Suddenly, the sensor on the outside hallway popped a proximity alert. Zhang quickly broke the link with their network and ducked into the shadows.

In lurched a vaguely humanoid form, now somewhat distorted what with the dripping acid and 5 mouths. "WHERE THE gently caress IS THE BATHRO-"

5 banishment rounds struck it right between each of its various pairs of eyes. No point in being careless, even with the alt-reality in his glasses shielding him from the worst of the sanity-blasting impact of its presence.

Zhang ran for the backdoor. He hoped this Aidan fellow was trustworthy- else he was right up poo poo creek.

Minutes later, in the kitchen.
"See this? This is the reason why I am literally never loving sober."
Zhang sighed. "Get to the point, Mr. Frost."
"Look, now they're lookin' for ya. Cousin Iqjak is dead, and they know SOMEONE is in the house that shouldn't be. If you want to get out, you're gonna have to follow my lead exact-like."
Zhang checks his weapons. "...fine." No choice but to trust him. But I don't like it.
"Door's this way. I'll chat with Cousin gAiKhjAsiH."
Frost turned the corner. "Hiya, cuz!"
"sO Y R U hyOman NoW?"
Frost gestured with his eyes. Get out. You owe me one.
Zhang ran for the exit.
As he left, he caught a final snippet of conversation. "Look, it seemed like a good idea at the time..."

Aspect: The Ol' Shanghai Spirit
Invoke: Working with people he doesn't trust, scrambling to make the best of a bad situation, remaining calm in a crisis, looking the mythos straight in the eye
Compel: Owing people favors, staying too long on an assignment, taking his foes seriously.

Guest starring in: The Negotiator
"Agent TRIFORCE 13, are you in position?"
Zhang San connected his rig to the theatre's systems and sighed. "Yes, sir. And may I again lodge my objections to my codename?"
"Noted and discarded, agent. Please assist the field team in infiltrating the complex while the bleeding hearts up front keep their eyes off."

Zhang gestured, and the door unlocked. "Come on, then, we don't have all evening."
The squad formed up around him. Information is power, and you keep your source of it safe.

"Tracking multiple hostiles using system cameras and sensors... uploading their locations to your map."

Zhang backed out. "There. Assistance provided. May I please return to my day off now?"
"Noted, Agent TRIFORCE 13. Command out."

Cursing, Zhang headed for the front of the theater, to quietly pass back out through the police cordon as a misdirected civilian. His foot hit something in the darkness. Picking it up, he sighed. "A goddamn incendiary grenade?" He looked back to the strike team. "One of those idiots needs to learn how to check his gear properly."

Turning the corner, he looked in a window and stopped. A cultist sniper was visible, facing the other way... and drawing a bead on the OOI negotiator up front. Looks like the cultists weren't interested in talking.

Zhang kept walking. "Not my problem..."
Like hell it isn't.
He looked again at the negotiator. She looked innocent. She hadn't had to scrabble for her life. She wasn't a killer.

"drat it."

With a crash, a cooked incendiary grenade went in through a window at the sniper's feet. He had just enough time to look down before the room was engulfed in flame.

As Kim's head snapped over, she had just enough time to spot a black-coated man staring at her with an odd expression on his face before the fire shifted and he vanished into the night.

Aspect: Sympathy for the Angels
Invoke: Preserve innocence, protect the innocent, do the hard thing so someone else doesn't have to.
Compel: Do the hard thing because there's no one else, get pulled back into other people's problems, refuse reward for selfless actions out of guilt.

Faction/Problem: The Gold Dragon Triad

Aspect: Digging Themselves Deeper, Too Much Power With Too Little Sense
Goals: Consolidate control over their holdings, drive their foes mad, appease their dark masters...

After Zhang left them, his old gang fell on some hard times all around. Pressed by stronger gangs and a number of high-profile members falling dead to revenge killings now that it was clear their killer of choice was gone, the Dragons resorted to more esoteric measures. Now their homes are defended with arcane wards, and their enemies find themselves plagued by psychological maladies and strange dreams. But they may have made some deals they may no longer be able to get out off...

Face/Lead: Mo Shen-Ming, "Last of the Traditionalists"

Aspects: Two Gun Bandit, What the Hell is this Magic poo poo, gently caress the Police
Goals: Get back to where we were before, stay alive

Mo Shen-Ming built his reputation on two pistols and perfect aim. So he's a bit perturbed to watch his superiors delve so deep into this strange magic poo poo. If he can't shoot it, he doesn't trust it. For this reason, he maintains a fondness for Zhang San, who he saw as a sort of protege before his disappearance. Unlike Zhang, he's still loyal to the Dragons- they're the only family he's ever had, and his own sense of honor and loyalty keeps him killing even as he worries more and more about where this train of madness and dreams ends...

Location: The Lucky Buddha Gambling Parlor

Aspects: It's a Trap, Leyline Nexus, No Seriously It's a Trap

The Lucky Buddha is one of the Dragon's new... investments. Carefully rigged with symbol and power, the Triad hopes to lure their foes within and set off the magic equivalent of a pipe bomb, annihilating the souls of their foes. The channels are set up so they can even target specific rooms, or even single chairs. Other than that, the only risk is losing all your money...

Faction: The 4 Beasts Triad

Aspects: Let's Make a Deal, Sellouts, Hand of the Monkey King
Goals: Defeat the Golden Dragons, get back out from under the hand of Wukong, survive

The 4 Beasts used to be contenders, real monsters and real money. Then the Golden Dragon made some deals, and the 4 Beasts found themselves pushed against a wall by a foe they could not fight and could not stop. In some ways, they took it better than their rivals had, back in the day- they only sold their souls to mundane masters. The 4 Beasts, while nominally under their own recognizance, now effectively function as agents of the Wukong Corporation- in return, Wukong keeps the magical heat off them, stymieing the Golden Dragon... for now.

Face: Ya-Long Guo, "Dragon of the East"

Aspects: Could Be Worse, I Guess, Looking to Get Out of This Mess, Not Too Old to Kill
Goals: Survive retiring, make sure the 4 Beasts survive his retirement as well

Ya-Long Guo has been a Triad for nearly 50 years, now. He knows it's time for him to leave the life behind and retire into the country somewhere, but he also knows that without him, one of the 4 Beasts that gave the drat group its name, they will never survive- especially not without him pushing back against the Wukong. So he keeps his duties going and keeps his head down, and hopes beyond hope that he can make it through to the other side.

The fact that he can still easily gut a man half his age tends to help.

Faction: The Wukong Corporation

Aspects: They Who Fight Monsters, Rage Against the Machine, Kings of Metal
Goals: Purge magic from the world, slay elder things, apotheosis

In legend, Sun Wukong fought against the armies of heaven and won until the Buddha himself intervened. The Wukong Corporation knows drat well Buddha isn't helping this time, and they intend to make the armies of "heaven" squeal. Formed by a powerful group of angry rich men after the Xanthic Storm, Wukong Co specializes in magic neutralization (public), anti-caster weapons (public), shielded equipment and homes (public), the killing of things that can't die (secret), and [REDACTED] (top secret.) A lot of men and women die in their experimental labs... this being Shanghai, nobody notices.

Face: Dong Zhou, Vice President of Division 4

Aspects: Rich rear end Motherfucker, Not As Stupid As He Looks, Consummate Liar
Goals: See Wukong Co + Make self even richer

People who meet Dong Zhou do so in one of two ways. Those who see him in his office leave with the impression of a goofy, lovable man who only wants the best for his employees.

Those who meet him in the labs at Site 19 know he's the coldest, most ruthless employee Wukong has- and he'll stop at nothing to achieve its goals.

Not after what happened to his family.

Location: Site 19 (Division 4 Secret Lab)

Aspects: Sometimes You Can Hear the Screams, Sacrifice Zone, Null and Void

Report 2094 FYEO 24/06

Site 19 Status: Operational
Containment shells for Specimens 1274-1294 (Designation "Shoggoth") completed 15/06

Random ideas for places/setting changes

Trainseldritch in:

When our intrepid heroes find themselves in the middle of the Australian desert, what is there to do except shoot their way back out? If only they knew why everything was out to kill them... Other than it just being Australia. It's time for an Outback Freakout

Zombies? Nope, just hipsters. Will their itchy trigger fingers get them in deep poo poo? Or are the organic coffeeshops secretly a front for something more sinister? They were worshipping Shub-Niggurath before it was cool in Portlandia

All the neon in the city is behaving oddly... Can an infestation of strange Colours be purged in time to save Miami, and more importantly save the strip clubs? Or are they trapped in The City of Deadlights?

Long ago, the ivory trade and it's atrocities flowed from these jungles. Now, it's mostly full of people who think that living in cities is like, totally passe. But is there something sinister beneath this neo-primitive nonsense? The many masks of Nyarlathotep take center stage in Heart of Dorkness.

Yu Zhong

Things didn't got as planned in Shanghai. Sure, technically, the OOI won the day. Sure, Zhang San got his chance to leave.

Too bad about the bits where he lost pretty much everything he still cared about.

The conflagration that ended his stay in Shanghai destroyed what was left tying him to his past, and to his shock and embarrassment he found that sensation was terrifying rather than freeing. Losing the only people you've ever seen as family will do that to man. During his black period, he quit the OOI. After making sure their files on him were wiped, of course. Back under the name he abandoned with his former life, once, he decided to go find himself. A few months of that were enough to establish there wasn't anything in there.

He wandered a while, purposeless and barely sane, until the Soul Network gave him a call. They needed someone with a talent for infiltration and a refreshing lack of hesitation about killing to go deal with a couple of issues.

Yu doesn't see it as backsliding.

He's just stopped lying to himself, that's all.
