Crassus is awesome. I thought they would have made him more of a manipulative bastard because that's what he's known for but I like this depiction of him as well.

Oh, also, that 4way was like, literal porn. :stare:

At one point during the 4way, I felt like I was actual porn for a second and expected to see them actually having sex...

That being said, awesome premiere. So much happened. This is the only show that makes me comment on poo poo out loud. When Spartacus ran into that room at the end, I said (to the two commanders) "Oh, you are so hosed!".

I know...

There's this video where he talks about explaining the fact that he's dying to his young kids. Something along the lines of "daddy's body's broken and it can't be fixed".

I think I actually shed a tear or two when I saw that.

For those of you who haven't seen it, here's the short documentary I was talking about.

Prepare to get things caught in your eyes.

Edit: hmm, that's not the one I meant. Does anybody know the video I am talking about?

That's exactly the reaction the writers are going for. It's easy to root for the gladiators when they're oppressed and being used as pawns, but now that they're in control, they're becoming exactly the things they hate. While it isn't exactly a unique theme, I'm glad the writers are exploring it.

Not saying you're wrong or anything (in point of fact, it's painful to watch), but I think the show is doing a great job with their approach and they know exactly what they're doing. Instead of associating with Spartacus (like we did for the Blood and Sand and Vengeance), now the audience is associating with Gannicus. And like him, we don't like what we see, but we can't stop it. It's a nice little shift.

Also, while this show isn't a documentary, it's not like the slaves in the rebellion were paragons of virtue. This kind of stuff happened once the uprising started. To make it seem like they aren't just as bad in some respects as the Romans would be quite the whitewashing of history.

The overall plot arc has been reasonably historically accurate so far, all things considered, but am I the only one who just wants it to go crazy off-the-rails alt history at the end? Like instead of the ending we all know is coming, pull an Inglorious Basterds and have Spartacus conquer Rome or something.

They already kind of did this with the Ceasar plot, considering he had nothing to do with them at all in reality and the show's portrayal of him is about as far as you can get from the real guy, but eh. I'll be content either way, I just want to see what they can do with the story and knowing the outcome is always one of those little weaknesses of historical dramas that has to be worked around.

edit: ^Hell, technically they never even found Spartacus' body, or couldn't identify it. I think they will have to end up doing something weird here because they keep making such a big deal of Crassus and Spartacus seeing each other's faces, so saying "well we killed all these guys but we don't know which one is Spartacus" isn't going to work.

edit: Also, was I the only one kind of disappointed when Crassus came to see the wall and then escaped the ambush? Like wouldn't the first person you go for be the guy standing in the middle wearing the biggest, fanciest poo poo? You've got people like Navea on the wall that can apparently put arrows through people's eyeballs in the middle of a blizzard, and I dunno how many times Spartacus has tossed a javelin some absurd distance to nail a guy running off, but nobody is able to hit Crassus even with the element of surprise, when it takes all his men like 10 seconds to even realize what's going on? And then they just waddle off into the snow? I thought they'd at least try to chase them down, since it looked like there weren't any other Romans chilling around to lend a hand.

I was much more disappointed that Tiberius didn't eat a spear right then and there :smith:

Tiberius is awful, but c'mon man, Joffrey has literally no redeeming qualities. At least you could sympathize with Tiberius when his friend died in decimation. Joffrey is just something else.

I'm thinking, in today's world, Tiberius might be a rapist. Joffrey however, would be a psychopathic serial killer.

I don't want to give the impression that it's an evolution from 'be at the front of your guys' to 'carefully coordinate from good vantage point', because at the end of the day you need both. A lot of which general to be probably hinged on personal preferences; there are plenty of generals who were damned successful, and often rode into the thick of battle (usually as cavalry); two examples that spring to mind are Alexander the Great, and Adolphus Gustavus, both pretty successful leaders. Of course, doing so also got Adolphus killed.

But even when you're the hang out in the back type of general, you still need plenty of capable eyes right up front to tell you exactly what is happening. Any modern military worth it's salt will have officers up front, and also a general staff sitting in a room coordinating everything.

Ghengis Khan is another good example. Or any of the khans who came after him.

The series isn't on Netflix (not sure if it's headed there). That said, I'd personally recommend you start with Gods of the Arena prequel mini-series before you dive into Blood and Sand. That is, if you don't mind spoiling the ending of the Season 1. But I think you already know where it would be headed :)

Just ignore this advice. It's objectively wrong.

So I watched the 3/4ths of first episode years ago and hated it immediately. But because of this thread I decided to give it another go and by the 3rd episode or so I was hooked. That first season was great and I'm glad I watched it.

But then I tried to start the second season and the same thing happened. I can't get over the fact that they replaced the lead actor as Spartacus. I mean what the hell? I got to like halfway into episode 2 and gave up. Haven't touched it in 8 months.

Please tell me you didn't skip the prequel?
