Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Annalise is up early. Usually a stay in town is a chance to enjoy the nights and sleep in late, but sharing the room with six others - including an enormous troll - makes it difficult to find space for lounging around. If she wasn't already used to sleeping rough, she might not have gotten any sleep at all. Any other time of year she would consider camping out instead, but even their crowded lodgings beat hunkering down in the wind and snow and waking up covered in frost.

The other reason to be up early is for the sliver of privacy it provides while she's cleaning up at the washbasin and getting ready for the day. While she can usually rely on her comrades not to gawk or grimace at her scars, she'd still prefer to display them as little as possible. With her hair brushed over her scar and her hat cocked to aid the effect, she rolls up her possessions in her bedroll and tucks it away.

Once she's ready, the sounds and smells from downstairs come into sharp focus and set her stomach rumbling. Funds are getting low, and she could probably skip out the meal. On the other hand, the Captain always said that an army marched on its stomach - the first step to getting anything done was making sure the men were fed and rested. Anticipating another hard day of chasing up their potential charter, maybe it's best to be well fed. At this point she'll look to the others, seeing who else is ready or at least awake. "Sounds like breakfast is up downstairs. Who else wants a bite 'fore we hit the streets?"

First thing on the agenda is a greasy, smoldering breakfast. After that, we should get on the charter business and work out what needs to happen to get it signed

She rolls her eyes at Collin's question, and considers tossing something at him for good measure. Unfortunately the only thing in the room seems to be other people. "Fetch your own. Although if we don't get the charter in order, I might as well buy a dress and starting slinging plates for a living." What a miserable thought that is. No, she'd sign up somewhere else before then, even if it meant scurrying back to her old company with her hail between her legs. She'll give the others moment to get moving before heading down the stairs, calling back to the remainder "We'll grab a table for you lot."

Downstairs, she'll take a moment to scan the room as they enter, looking for any familiar faces. At first she assumes the guards are there for the food, same as anyone else. Then she notes the upscale patron they must be escorting. Who would bring an escort to the Quill, she wonders, while finding an open table for them. As she sits, she'll pick up the conversation with Julian "I'll be happy to have it signed in Merywyn as soon as you liberate the country and find a missing heir, Julian. Until then, Cygnar seems our choice." She waves for a server and a couple of plates "Can the Church even sign a charter? Suppose it's worth checking." Contemplating the idea of mercenaries of Morrow, she leans to peer at the out-of-place guest once again, hoping for a clue to their purpose.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

She chews thoughtfully on a mouthful while seriously considering Julian's suggestion. It's an interesting thought, but she has no idea how it would play out. It's not like burning churches was something she was keen on anyway, but even the Empress of Khador was technically Morrowan - and so would be a lot of the people they're liable to shoot. But the Percursors fought alongside Cygnar often enough. "I suppose we could look into it, at least. I'd guess that Jeff is right though, and they'd want us to be..." She pauses, sketching a circle in the air with the burnt bit of food on her fork while she looks for the right word. "...devout? You know, show some allegiance?" Though technically Morrowan, Annalise is keenly aware that most mercenaries - present company included - mostly bow their heads to money and drink. She examines the scorched object on her fork for a moment. It's impossible to tell whether it was originally eggs, bread, or meat. It's entirely possible that a piece of iron has flaked off Rolgo's ancient pans.

Annalise sets it aside as Collin sits, in favor of something that at least looks like egg. "No idea, but looks like they brought some city muscle." She flickers another contemplative look at the odd guest, and then shuffles further down the bench, trying to make some room for Slagg. His bulk was certainly reassuring in a fight, but the rest of the time he made her feel like a child, peering up at a looming parent. She answers his question briefly, "Not sure yet, but we might be going to church." She then nods toward the well-dressed patron. "What do you think? Trouble?" All that time working in bars, she thinks, might have given Slagg some better sense of how to gauge various guests and their potential.

She notes the attention the guardsmen is paying them with slight frown, and wishes that Slagg's input had been more reassuring. Sure, this wasn't likely to be trouble; but if it was, it was going to be bad trouble. Knocking heads with some drunk dockers would only mean some bruises and threats from Rolgo, but if they've crossed the law somehow it could get ugly in all sorts of ways. She abandons the inedible remains on her plate, and presses the helpful serving girl for any more information. "Any idea what for? Nothing to get Rolgo upset with us, I hope?" No doubt Rolgo wouldn't be pleased of some of his patrons were drawing particular interest with the city watch.

As much as she is tempted to get in on the discussion, having their whole party pile up on the guards table seems ill advised. Instead she leans back and does her best to evaluate what's going on. The man doesn't seem hostile, and she hopes Jeff can cut a reasonable deal.

When Jeff returns, she leans forward to examine the map, trying to work out the warehouse's location and what the surrounding buildings are. She is quiet while studying it, contemplating the mission and its payout. Without a charter it's the kind of grey-market work that you'd expect, but if the militia itself wasn't involved it would be perilously close to theft. And who knows how the Crucible will feel.

"I'm not keen to go in heavy without at least some more intelligence. Jed, it might just be a warehouse, but you're an aspiring young alchemist looking for work, eh? It seems like you could at least drop by without raising any eyebrows, just to make sure what's on the ground matches what we've been given."

She pauses for a moment to scan her other colleagues, trying to judge their sentiments on the mission. She had been most worried about Jed, but he seems on board. "However we do it, I'd like to avoid any serious damage or injury - even if this guy is running a front, the guards and workers might have no idea and offing Crucible men just sits wrong."

Her attention flicks back to Jeff, then, with a slight frown. "I suppose our friend wasn't willing to put this in writing for us? Do we at least have a name we're working for?" Just in case this all comes crashing down on them and they get arrested for smashing into a Crucible warehouse, it would be nice to have some evidence to the contrary.

She grimaces at Jeff's confirmation, not well pleased with that. Even if they make it a clean grab this is the sort of thing that could unravel badly on them. All the more reason to try and do it right. She takes a moment to glance around, wary of anyone snooping - although the loud common room provides its own sort of privacy.

"Julian, do you want to go in with Jed? The story can be that you're his backer, providing the outlay, so on, and want to be sure your money is well spent." She glances over to Jed to see how that sits with him "Probably an easier sell than a bodyguard or the like - I imagine they prefer to keep us bumbling axemen away from the volatiles."

"I expect we'll have to be loud about it anyway, but at least this way we can have some idea of where we are headed and what's inside - fewer surprises the better, and means we'll be in and out quicker with hopefully less mess than otherwise. And if they've parked it under a skylight for us..." She shrugs.

That leaves the rest of them, and she glances over the other three "I suppose the rest of us can case the general area, and work out where we are going to go once we get out with the box. Pretty sure we're not hauling it back here, and we might need to duck under until we can pass it on to our employer. Look for an empty warehouse or the like where someone won't notice a couple guys and a box for the night."

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

It might not have been such a good idea to head down into the stench right after breakfast, and Annalise is regretting the second helping of what was probably eggs but potentially just sufficiently congealed and charred fat. The river must get lethal during a hot, sluggish summer day, but hopefully they won't still be crawling the docks by then.

She takes the rifle and belt from Julian, with appropriate care for the expensive weapon. "I'll look after it. No reason there should be a fight in there, worst is that they'll tell you to shove off." She'll also take anything Jed needs to offload. The result is a particularly heavily-armed appearance for a casual dock walker, although perhaps not too much for an overly eager mercenary.

"Good luck in there. The rest of us can take a look about, check the area, meet back here in an hour or so when you might be done. Nothing else, lets meet back at the Quill this afternoon and run down what we know."

Annalise will walk the area for a while to get a sense of the layout. I assume it's just rows of warhouses down here, but if one of the neighbouring buildings is abandoned or similar it could be useful. I'd also like to evaluate whether we could fit a cart or similar vehicle down the street without too much trouble.

Ashcans

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Walking the area doesn't yield the perfect solution, but she does find something interesting. The warehouse next to their target has an additional loading area on the side of the structure, apparently so that a cart could pull in for stocking without blocking any of the street to traffic.

The arrangement includes a hoist jutting out from the building's roof, and a second-floor loading door and balcony to lower items from the higher levels. It would be relatively easy to get up onto the balcony, putting someone level with the second floor windows of the Crucible's warehouse and only a cart-width away. And the hoist extends far enough that you could use it to lower something from those windows down to the ground, with some wrangling and luck. If the box is on the higher levels, it could help them bring it out somewhere other than the front door.

She spends a few minutes eyeing the setup, trying to work out how much rope might be needed for the hoist and how long it would take to rig - assuming the workmen take down the tackle at night, and they may not be so diligent. She doesn't want to idle overlong staring, and so soon moves on, chatting idly with sailors and dockers as she works her way back to the meeting point.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

She loops back around to the rendezvous, and finds that Jed and Julian haven't emerged yet. That seems promising - for them to still be inside things must be going well with their ruse. If they can come out with comprehensive information to match with their external legwork, they might really be able to pull this off without it turning into a total mess.

With some more time to kill and the group making some good progress on their surveying, Annalise decides to spend a little more time doing information gathering. Perhaps some of the neighbors have something to say about their criminal friend. It's just a matter of finding the sort of people who might know; rough enough to bump shoulders with smugglers and dumb enough to chat about it.

Annalise is going to see if she can find any word about Tigh Stonks from the local riff-raff. We're at the docks, so there has to be some drinking or gambling going on where people will spread rumors. If Tigh is a known criminal maybe she can learn something about his operation.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

With how their luck has been her purse is pretty light, but it's hard to get something for free. Besides, if they can cinch this mission and get their charter signed it'll be worth the investment. At least, that's the justification she gives herself - the truth is that Annalise has a soft spot for dice and cards, no matter how many times she's ended up with nothing more than a hangover and a bad debt.

Counting that they'll be happy for a chance at her money, she kicks out a chair to sit down. "Sure can be. Pretty sure we have a good friends in common here to help with the introductions." She reaches into her coat and brings out some coins, settling a small stack in front of her.

Are they playing craps? I only understand the basics of it. Annalise has experience gambling from her time in the company, but she has never gotten the knack of it and tends to lose (hence no skills in it). She'll try to stay on task this time and play only what is needed to get some information. She doesn't have a lot of cash to work with, so hopefully the game isn't too rich.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Not willing to tip exactly how much she has to lose, Annalise sets the coin for the first bet on the line and the second in front on her. She doesn't have much hope of coming out ahead here, at least not in gold, but maybe it won't be a complete bust. With her bet up for the roll, she'll see if there's anyone willing to talk. "I'm new around here, and heard about a man called Tigh Stonks. Maybe a job with him. Know anything about him?"

Annalise is pretty skint, so I'll limit it to three bets (six crowns). First question is above; the second will be 'I hear handles shipments for the Crucible - does he run any 'discrete' business out of that warehouse?' The last one will be 'Anyone on the watch looking at him? I don't want to get involved in any business with the heat on it.'

After that it's probably time to meet up with the others and hammer out a solid plan for our job.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

With the last roll and loss, Annalise decides to pack it in before she gets caught up in the game itself. "Thanks for the advice, friend. Always nice to talk to someone who knows the lay of the land better'm you. Looks like luck ain't with me, though." She stands back from the table, tipping her hat as she heads for the door.

Stepping out of the dive, she looks around to get her bearings and then heads back to their rendezvous. Assuming the gambler knows anything, it seems like Stonks either keeps his hands pretty clean, or is careful to keep his operation apart from the regular black market. Hopefully when they compare notes with the inside team, they can get a judge of the sort of man they'll be crossing.

Adjusting the brace of weapons she's hauling, she cuts straight toward the rendezvous to wait for the others. The stink of the docks makes it hard to think about lunch, but she could do with a stiff drink while they pool their knowledge and hammer out a plan.

I can't see anything else worth doing until we've all shared information and had a chance to plan. It took four rolls to crap out with no point, so I'm down two crowns, is that right?

Ashcans
Jan 2, 2006

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Meeting up with the others, they get to pool their information and share what they know about the warehouse and the surroundings. She'll add in the details she managed to pick up on the outside. "There's a neighboring building with a hoist and balcony - might help us in or help us get the chest out, depending on how it lines up to interior. I also talked to some of the locals - no one seems to know about Stonks' less-legal business, so either he keeps it pretty light or plays it close to the chest - if they've got Lancers, it sounds like he's operating well over the street. Makes this a challenge, but also means we probably don't need to worry about any dockers throwing in with him or getting in our way - doubt he's mingling with local thugs much."

There's still plenty to talk about, but Slagg's news seems to be a priority if they can make use of it. It takes a moment for inspiration to strike "If they're getting coal in, chances are it's for whatever 'jacks they've got in there, right? Not like they're running a steamworks. So if you make the delivery, you should get the chance to see what sort of 'jacks are on site, and how and where they're stored. Might be those Lancers were just for the job, and even if they keep them around they might not keep them running all the time either. We know what there is and how it's kept, we can avoid it."

She flashes a glance around the others for their reactions, the thought already developing. "I doubt we can send more than one other person with Slagg, though, hardly a reason for us all to be trooping along on a delivery. Probably just one of us, say it's to keep an eye on the new guy and make sure he gets it right? I reckon we can sell that if you act a little slow, Slagg. Anyone else want to play minder?"

I'm happy to go with Slagg unless someone else is chomping at the bit or thinks they'd sell the ruse better. Then we can all reconvene and hammer out our plan?

Ashcans

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Sorry for the awkward pause thing, I wasn't sure if we were going through with Slagg's delivery now or jumping to the heist. I assume Slagg needs to make the delivery before we're planning to strike, do we want to run through that or skip ahead?

Ashcans

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

The audacity of a daylight strike brings her up short for a minute, contemplating the number of people on the docks and the clear havoc it would cause. But would those people actually turn out to help Stonks? The dockers had no particular loyalty to the Crucible, especially in the face of armed assault.

"Could work, sure. Could get really messy though. If we do that, I think we'd want someone who knows the interior and where the chest is going in with Slagg" She nods to Jed "Either you or Julian, and I'd say you in case there's need to use - or avoid - anything they've got in there. We don't want to knock something over and blow the place." She turns her attention back to the layout "That leaves the rest of us to kick up a fuss outside, get the guards out front... if the trunk comes out the back with the cart, we can take it down the route Collin found - not sure we'll have time to get a boat if we're starting now. Boat in daylight might not be a good getaway anyway, easy to watch and see where we put in."

Trying to spell all this out just makes it seem crazier, but it does have a certain appeal. Fortune favors the bold, they say, and the Crucible probably worries more about thieves than a frontal assault. Still, the idea of crashing the warehouse in broad daylight seems to invite additional trouble. Another idea comes to mind.

"Second option, maybe. Can we spike the coal somehow? Mix something into it or soak it so that it will either blow the boilers or quit burning? If they're using this for their 'jacks and we spike the lot, it'd take them all out and we'd be sitting pretty." She looks to the Alchemist and Mechaniks for their reaction - she knows you can't just toss anything into a furnace, but has no idea how hard it might be to intentionally ruin the fuel.

She leans back, mulling over the options and trying not to let the idea of signed charter cloud her judgement. "We go in now, even if this goes well, there'll be a ton of witnesses. It goes bad and we could find a mob on our backs. Doesn't mean it's not the way to do it, I just want everyone clear on their gamble. What do you think?"

Ashcans
Jan 2, 2006

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

With a rough consensus, Annalise nods in agreement. The idea of striking immediately had a certain appeal, but it was very risky. Besides, their backers had given them information on a time to strike, and might not appreciate too much free-wheeling.

"Alright. Slagg and I will make this delivery as-is, find out what we can, maybe we'll get some more information and a different view on the warehouse. Would be good if we could leverage the coal somehow, but doesn't seem like we have that chance. Maybe we can at least work out what we'll be seeing in there, 'jack-wise." She slings her obvious weapons onto the table. "I'll leave these with you guys - not like a coal delivery needs more protection than Slagg."

She stands up, settling her coat and checking her less-obvious holdout pistol is in place. Just in case. "Assuming that Jeff and Julian can get the boat in order, we'll plan to use that as our getaway - make sure it's big enough for all of us and the trunk, if not we'll need to plan who's in and who is using an alternate way out, like that scaffold trick. Jed, Collin, looks like you have some time to prepare anything you think might be handy. Like Julian says, we'll need to think on our feet in there, so anything might come in handy."

Annalise pauses for a moment, aware that she is on the verge of giving orders to the others without any real authority, and hoping that no one takes offense to that. She trusts them all to make the right moves, or wouldn't be prepared to sign a charter with them. "Let's meet back at the inn once we've run our errands - we can collect any gear we need, make any last-minute adjustments to the plan."

Ashcans
Jan 2, 2006

Let's do the space-time warp again!

The plan is to drop off the coal, apologize for any lateness on the basis of Slagg being a new (slow) worker, and try to get into back end of the warehouse. We don't know how deliveries normally go, but if they just leave it at the door we can offer to shift/load it for them to make up for the delay - ideally we would like to see what it's going to, and get a count of whatever 'jacks they might have running tonight.

I am not sure that we can spike the coal - it seems like Jed would need more time to cook something up for it, and I don't know what is quick-and-dirty that could work. We could slop some water on it, but that would be really obvious. Could we hide some ammo in the coal? I don't know that a handful of slugs going off would actually wreck a furnace/boiler, but it's probably our only shot. If we can swing by a store, I'll buy some slugs and do that

Ashcans

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Right, I forgot that the ammunition in IK doesn't work the same way as gunpowder. I think that stuffing some bags into the coal is going to be pretty obvious (and chancy to work). The delivery is probably already late, so I vote we stall another half hour and let Jed try to get the Rusting Agent - that seems like it has the best chance of working, assuming that it survives being thrown into the furnace.

Ashcans
Jan 2, 2006

Let's do the space-time warp again!

I think that's the plan, don't think we have anything better. I imagine they're going to be grouchy about the delay, so my plan is to say that Slagg is a new worker who is a little slow, and he ended up getting turned around and Annalise had to find him and guide him onto the delivery - with apologies, and we'll offer some extra help unloading/etc to make up for it (which might get us more time/a different view inside).

At this point I assume we're waiting for Gr3y to set the scene, let me know if we need more info to go ahead.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

The guards don't seem too bothered about their tardiness, which is something of a relief - she wasn't sure they could have bluffed their way through too many questions. Apparently the coal shuttle is not the most punctual of deliveries at the best of times. She tips her hat to Thrakass, acknowledging his instructions "Sure thing boss, we'll take care of it."

Annalise eyes the Bulldog as they move past it and through the open door, trying to absorb as much information without obviously gawking. Even if it's set up for simple labor, those hands and hook would be lethal. If they're lucky, it's configured to listen to Thrakas alone and there might not be someone on the night shift who can direct it as easily.

Once inside, Annalise ducks ahead of Slagg and the cart, glancing around the racks and trying to spot anything of interest. For the benefit of anyone who might be listening - or watching them out of notice - she makes a point checking the clearance on the cart and giving Slagg directions as them move toward their target "Easy there, watch the left - no, other left! Everything in here's worth more'n us, so take it careful."

Hopefully we'll pass under the radar as people just doing our menial job - let's not delay too much on the way to the coal bin, as Jed and Julian probably got a good look at the racks in their inspection. Is there anything else around the bin to give an indication of what the coal is for or where it ends up?

Ashcans
Jan 2, 2006

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Getting to the bin safely, they should be out of the sight of the door and the guards' immediate attention. From Julian they know there are at least two other people who will be in the building, but hopefully Stonks and Mary don't spend their time simply wandering the warehouse floor - all that alchemisting requires careful attention to tubes and beakers and so forth, right? Still, better to play it safe - Annalise settles into her role as a minder for a few minutes while Slagg gets to shoveling. "Alright, get it loaded - carefully! - don't want spilt coal everywhere."

While pretending to monitor Slagg, she scans the are they can see for any sign of other workers on the floor or supervisors roaming about. Assuming that they seem to be in the clear for a minute, she'll stray away from the bin and Slagg's work, first to look up and see if there is anything up where the coal hoists to, and then to see if she can spot any other 'jacks stored around. It couldn't be easy to hide a couple of Lancers, even if a big warehouse.

Does the hopper just lift the coal out of the way, or is there some sort of machinery/steamworks up above that it's feeding into? Or a conveyor or something that moves it elsewhere? Annalise is also trying to spot any other 'jacks, but she'll be cautious about moving too far from their work area and try to keep an eye out for anyone headed their way

She glances over to check on Slagg's steady progress and make a guess on how much time they can draw this out before it seems strange. As long as the troll is moving at a regular pace no one will probably pay much mind for a while; that's a big hopper and quite a load. With no other machinery in sight, it seems like the coal is intended to power the Bulldog and the dozing Docker in the rear. That's two jacks more than she'd like, and good to know that one is lurking in the rear.

The number of workers circulating makes her nervous about haring off, but there's hardly a point in their subterfuge unless she's going to make the best of it. What's the worst that could happen? Unless she tries to take something, if she's caught she might get thrown out with a couple bruises and have a complaint sent to her 'employer'. That would be a fair trade for the right information. She looks back to Slagg, lowering her voice "Keep an eye for anyone who looks like they're in charge - I'm going to look around."

It seems like the warehouse has enough 'jacks to do any hauling they might need - certainly for the trunk. If they have any lurking for security, it seems like they'd keep them together for easy maintenance and control - unless Stonks employees a half-dozen skilled marshals. With that in mind, she moves toward the nearest pile of crates that could conceivably hide a pair of 'jacks. Her luck never seemed to come up on with dice or cards - maybe it will hold out now.

We know a little bit more, but I figure it's time to go for broke. Annalise will try to snoop around and see if she can spot any other 'jacks or anything else of interest. She's bound to be stopped or questioned eventually, but we'll see what she can find out first. However, she'll avoid heading for the trunk in case that draws attention to their real interest.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Unalerted to the approaching worker, Annalise turns quickly to face the question. Fortunately being caught out isn't a total surprise, and she knows the best way to not be questioned overmuch is to act that you aren't doing anything wrong in the first place. She starts by flashing the woman a quick smile, although many people don't find that too terribly comforting.

"Maybe you can, ma'am. I'm with the delivery crew." She waves over at Slagg, who is still at work. "Boss told us to make sure there weren't any spare carts left around - said he thought the last delivery left one by accident. We weren't the last team through, so I wasn't sure where it might have been left. Know anything about it? I figured it wouldn't be left by the hopper, you wanting to keep that area clear and all." She motions to the lift system, then squints off down one of the warehouse aisles. Ten to one she's about to get told off for poking around instead of just asking Thrakas, but as long as they look incompetent and not suspicious it'll be alright.

Busted. Let's hope Mary has a low opition of coalmen and their capabilities

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Of course, the Bulldog had moved that empty cart out front while they were standing there, which is going to make them look pretty dense. Annalise tries for her best puzzled look. "At the main door? Hmm. Thanks for checking on it, ma'am."

While Mary is investigating the cart is probably the last chance they'll have to gain any more insight. She's a fair distance from the door, and hopefully Mary will have at least a brief exchange with Thrakas to clear up the cart issue. Hopefully that's enough time. As soon as Mary has turned a corner, Annalise will duck over to check that last spot she noticed before she was caught. She doesn't want to compound any trouble, so she'll make it as quick as she can and then get back to where she was supposed to be waiting.

If Annalise can't make it back to the spot, she'll try to at least make it look like she was headed back over toward Slagg - presuming the layout allows that to make any sort of sense. Not sure if Slagg can squeeze in any useful stuff during this time, sorry you're stuck loading!

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Looks like times up for this search. Annalise heads back to where Mary had left her, hoping that she can get there without her further snooping being noticed or suspected. She'll adopt an appropriately concerned look, which is only partly faked - there is always a chance things can go ugly, although the fact that Slagg is around and might take poorly to her being roughed up probably helps.

When the pair gets close enough, she'll try to head off anything with her own opening. "So is it up front, then? I'm real sorry for any trouble, me and him -" she nods toward Slagg "- are fresh on the job and only instructions we got was to put our banks into it. Boss is big on self-training."

Those big crates with the Cygnus on them certainly give her pause. Certainly it's no surprise that the Crucible would be dealing directly with the authorities, supplying all sorts of things for the war effort, but who knows what's in them. On the other hand, if it's 'jacks that are tucked away there they hardly seem ready to start and fight on short notice, and it would be hard for anyone to do so in the middle of a fight. So maybe the two labor 'jacks are the big hitters to look our for.

I feel like I'm basically monopolizing the narrative for the last couple days - sorry guys! Once this wraps we can get back to the group effort, I didn't intend to be a scene hog.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

She's suddenly glad she decided to leave most of her weapons with the others - her holdout and knife are out of sight, and hopefully the guard won't decide he needs to start hacking at an unarmed delivery grunt, even one acting as odd as she has. It's a relief when the imposing bulk of Slagg looms, both for the backup and cue to leave. "All done, sure, and we'll get that cart on the way out. Sorry for the mix-up."

She looks up to Slagg and claps him on the back. "Next time I'll shovel and you take charge, seems like I'll miss my own boots next." Hoping the guard is less on edge with them safely under watch and on their way out, she'll head toward the front door, helping to guide the cart through the warehouse without causing any more problems. She mutters under her breath, loud enough for an attentive guard to catch. "First day and already fouling up the job, the boss will put me on pit duty for a week if he keeps me on."

Assuming we get out of here clean, it's time to reconvene with the others and get any final details of the plan nailed down. I figure that we can either take the fee and dump the carts somewhere - Slagg earned that cash! - or Slagg can take the carts back and probably lose the fee. Not sure if we have any use for the carts in the heist that would make one worth keeping?

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Whoops, looks like we hive-minded over to the recruitment thread to hash out our plans! It looks like we are planning on picking up the boat earlier, and coming in to the dock at the planned shift change - Annalise and Julian will stay near the boat and hold the dock, while the others smash in through the back door. If there are jacks running we'll try to keep them tied up while Slagg smashes and Jed booms and hopefully get the chest back out to the boat. Julian and Annalise will provide ranged support and backup as needed, I think. If the whole thing goes to hell and we can't get back to the boat, we'll plan to haul the chest down the dead-drop alley that Collin found.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Going to try and run a summary based on what we have posted, hopefully this isn't horribly wrong:

The group is getting the boat and sailing to the dock behind the warehouse as a group. At that point we split into two teams:

Wall Breach/Smash and Grab:
- Slagg
- Jed
- Collin
- Jeff

Fire Team/Boat Guards:
- Annalise
- Julian

Smash and Grab is, I think, going through the back wall/door closest to the dock, so that we can haul the trunk back out that way to the boat so that we can make our escape. Fire Team keeps the exit clear and watches for any other interference/support while shooting stuff. I don't think anyone is going up the windows, it'll split up the party too much if things go south.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

As the others prepare to break in, she tugs her mask into place - small help it might be, she's probably one of the more identifiable of the group should she be spotted. Slagg's blast is startlingly loud in the cold night air, and she can't help but flinch at the roar of shattering masonry. That's one way to knock - hopefully people won't be overly eager to explore why the Alchemist's warehouse is exploding, and they have some time to move.

She slides a quarrel into her crossbow, raising the butt to her shoulder to stand ready to fire as she scans the docks for any trouble.

Annalise will stay by the boat for now. She'll keep an eye for any interference headed along the docks toward them, while waiting to see how smoothly things go for the inside team

She nods to Julian's request and then, realizing that he won't see that while scanning the river, adds in a hushed voice. "Nothing so far. Maybe they're keeping their heads down." Hell, if she was guarding a store of dangerous chemicals and something went off, she wouldn't be running to find out what. They might be waiting to see how much of the building comes down, and not even realize that it's a break in.

At least, that's what she tells herself as the silence stretches out uncomfortably. Maybe it's possible that everything is just going perfectly. She glances over to the baot, making sure that the pilot is sitting tight and hasn't decided that he wants to bail out on this whole venture. Not being part of their gang, he'd be the weak point.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

She grits her teeth as the time ticks by with no sign of any change. drat, drat, drat. Either there should be some sounds of the wrecking crew running into trouble, or they should be on their way out by now. She tries to imagine what might be holding them up that isn't gunfire. Trouble with the lock? Maybe the Alchemists secure cage was something they needed more time to work through.

Her attention flickers to the ship hand, taking her attention off the dock for a few moments. She's not comfortable hiring out, but it's not like they owned a boat or the people to crew it. "Our friends are just getting something from inside - some property we misplaced, you understand. Looks like there's no objection, right? You just stay ready to move out when they come back out here." Even with the situation keeping her on edge, she tries to stay cordial. No need to alienate these men.

Now hurry up and get out here with that trunk. Her attention swings back to he gaping hole in the warehouse, and then along the docks. God, even if everything is going like clockwork there should have been some reaction from someone around here by now, even if just to make sure that the place wasn't burning to the ground with everything around it. She strains to catch the sound of, well, anything in the night.

I'll make a Detection check as well, for whatever it's worth. It'll be 2D6+4(PER)+2(SKILL)

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Catching a whiff of the scent on the breeze, her growing anxiety spikes abruptly. The Dragon's Tongue always smells terrible, but it's usually the smell of too many people doing their living on or in it, not the smell of blood or death. Even if something terrible has happened to the guards - explaining why there is no reaction yet - it's not like that would cause this reek. She looks over to Julian. "Do you smell that? Like a bad corpse. Something's not right here, way off. I think we should check the others, regroup..." Maybe get out of here, before the bottom really falls out of this. But she doesn't say that aloud, stopped by the thought of their charter. They've got to get that trunk.

Keeping her crossbow ready, she moves toward the gaping hole in the warehouse, with the sudden fear that something terrible and silent has happened to the rest of the group. "Hsst! What's going on in there?"

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

She flashes a look to Julian, not keen on voicing his unspoken fears herself, not in the middle of the night with things going to pieces around them. "Not recent dead. Like it's had a chance to fester. Nothing like that earlier today." Even without a clear answer from the team inside, she can tell that they are alive and that things aren't looking any better inside the warehouse than out. Deciding that she the cramped confines of the warehouse aren't a place to be shooting, she backs out to the docks again. "Looks like our target is moved - out the front. Looks like they're going through - should we go around?" She glances back to the boat - with the way things are going she's not confident about leaving them untended, but it seems like a worse idea to split up the group any more than they have. Especially sending one poor bastard around the outside on their own, that's just asking for it.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

She peers into the darkness of the warehouse, wishing that she had brought a good light source. Although there's no good way to carry a lamp and a crossbow at the same time anyway. She doubts that Julian has a lamp handy either, as he'd have the same issue. She hesitates on entering the warehouse, not keen to stumble into a dark, crowded space where they'll be harder pressed to use their ranged advantage. "Let's skirt around the outside - we can check the window if it sounds like they've got a brawl inside, and otherwise I want to see what's happened to those front guards"

She'll move along the outside of the warehouse, heading up the side with the hoist and balcony on their way to the front.

I don't see any gain in putting the ranged support in a dark, enclosed space - if we're needed we can get up to the window to lay down some fire. In the meantime we can head around the outside of the building to get to the front and see if there's any evidence of what's going on up there

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

She's wary of a decoy, and so looks around the surrounding area cautiously before opting for a closer look at the hoist. Before she does, she glances to Julian and whispers "Something up there - stay sharp." She'll move toward the hoist and try to get a better look at whatever is dangling off it. Hopefully there is enough light from the stars and surrounding city to make out what's up there - she'll try to climb up if needed.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Annalise Ardenne

Well now, this has got to be some sort of trap. Why on earth would anyone hang a coat from the hoist? She takes a moment to carefully look over the hoist and the surrounding area, then across at the window of the warehouse - checking to see if that had been pried open or broken to gain entry. Assuming nothing looks too suspicious, she'll sling her crossbow, and use her Axe to try and unhook the coat from the hoist - she's not keen on grabbing it with her hand.

I'd like to make a Perception check to spot anything strange about the coat or how it's set on the hoist - in case it's trapped or filled with facehuggers or something. If everything looks clear she'll bring it down for a closer look. Seems like we're just full of dead ends.

She sets her axe to the side, still in reach, so that she can use both hands to turn over the garment and examine it more closely. In the dim light it takes her a moment to recognize it as belonging to one of her comrades - Jeff. She frowns in confusion and then mutters a curse, grabbing her axe and heading down from the hoist with all possible speed.

"Something's very wrong here" She mutters as she descends. She can't think of any possible way for Jeff's coat to end up on the hoist, even if things managed to go really badly for them inside without any sign of it to her and Julian. He was wearing it, wasn't he? She has a moment of doubt trying to recall, but it's not like that would explain it well either. This whole thing seems like a mess, and she's more and more inclined to cut and run from the whole venture.

Annalise (and I assume Julian) are going to head back around to where Slagg breached the wall to get into the warehouse and get the rest of the team. From there she's planning to head back to the boat and bail on this entire mess, getting them as far from the warehouse as reasonable.
