I actually just hold down the Shift key.
Pretty sure you're only allowed 10 Points of Advantages, same as Disadvantages.

Nah, Advantages can, by default, go up to fifteen, at least going by the book. Heck, there's at least one Advantage that costs twelve points on its own, Prodigy. Some GMs will let you go a bit higher, too, but beyond fifteen you probably want to talk to the GM first.

Yes!
I finally understand everything there is to know about axes!

Matsu Itaru was a young man when the Emperor Shoju I ascended to the imperial throne, in fact being married in the same year. His marriage was not without hardships but largely he was content with it. Itaru's wife, Sayaka, came from the Akodo family yet refused to be subordinate to Itaru who was rather baffled by his smaller yet larger than life wife. She was ordered to the wall and Itaru remained to keep the household in order. For three years Sayaka returned for some time before being returned to the wall. Then one day a messenger arrived, informing Itaru that Sayaka had been waylaid and killed by bandits. As she had been injured the bandits had eventually overcome her, not even her armour or sword had been left. Itaru was outraged that such a crime had been allowed to happen within the Empire, and that the Emperor seemed fit to allow such crimes to spread. Was not the Emperor's duty to the people of Rokugan? What good was it diminishing its forces against a fight they could not win and had been contained? He had understood the importance of fighting back the Shadowlands and had been prepared to give the new Emperor a chance, but such forgiveness had been burned away from him with the parchment with the message bearing his wife's death to him.

What clan does your character belong to?
Itaru is a Lion, the strongest clan of the Empire and its self-appointed protectors since the first Emperor

What family does your character belong to?
As his last name says, Itaru belongs to the Matsu who fear neither death nor battle and throw themselves entirely into what they must do.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?
He is a Bushi.

How would others describe your character's appearance?
Large and strong, but with a presence to him and self-assurance. Yet all this outgoing facade is betrayed by his sad eyes, which seem to smile ever less each day.

What is your character's primary motivation?
Itaru wants to protect the people of the Empire, which in the end may mean deposing the Emperor. If the Scorpion are prepared to take the throne through treachery, then perhaps it must be reclaimed by force.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
His teacher, who taught him how to fight and how to think.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?
Itaru is best served by his compassion, he sees the Lion as the protectors of the Empire, and the Empire is made up of its people. Thus he cares greatly for the plight of the people, even those he should not see or acknowledge due to his station.

His weakness is that he believes he has little to live for now. He does not see much in the future, living day to day as it comes and still mourning the loss of his wife.

What is your character's opinion of her clan?
The Lion are the warriors of the Empire, and its protectors. They have been weakened and diminished by what has transpired, but a Lion will lick its wounds and come back strong another day.

Is your character married?
Yes, but she died and Itaru is now alone.

Does your character have any prejudices?
Itaru does not have a very good view of the Scorpion Clan, so far as to view them as traitors and a blight on the Empire just like Maho. If one has gathered all the worst that the Empire has to offer in a single Clan, why did you not then deal with them?

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?
To Rokugan's safety, within and without.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?
Itaru loves children and had looked greatly to raising one. Now that he cannot, he finds a bittersweet solace in the joy of other children of the Empire. In contrast, Itaru hates those that put themselves before others for it is they who allowed the Empire to begin to descend into increased internal chaos.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
Itaru overdoes things and sometimes, being over generous or over cheerful to cover a simmering depression beneath. When he thinks he is alone he will hold a simple pendant given to him by his wife, and reminisce on better times.

What about your character's emotions?
Itaru tries to be optimistic, outgoing and jovial to cover up a growing depression underneath.

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?
A fiery outburst of chastisement, followed by a somewhat more calm deliberation on the exact failing committed and how they should better follow Bushido next time.

How would your character's parents describe her?
He has the strength of a Lion, but the heart of a cub.

What is your character's highest ambition?
To reforge the safety of the citizens of the Empire and to decimate the growing rise in outlaws and crime.

How religious is your character?
The Kami and Fortunes have their places and it is proper to respect them for it. Beyond this Itaru is not particularly more devout than any other Rokugani might be on average, the touch of Fortune on his life is mostly distant and light.

How will your character die?
Either a martyr, or an enemy of the Empire and thoughts of being reunited with his wife at last.

All right, we've got enough apps now to fill up, so I'm going to re-shift the deadline. Anyone still wanting to get their character submitted, please try to have it in by this evening (I'm in Eastern time) if possible, if you'd like to be considered in this round of signups. Otherwise, I'll be making my decision sometime after I get home from work and posting the threads.

After much deliberation, I have selected the characters for each group. I'd like to thank everyone who applied, even those who were not selected have offered me some interesting ideas and possibilities; you'll all be more than welcome to resubmit or offer a new character should there come a time when I need to fill in a slot for whatever reason.

For the Dissenters:

Roland Jones - Moshi Haruka
Dagon - Moto Daitomu
Winson_Paine - Togashi Win
ProfessorCirno - Ikoma Asano
CAPSLOCKGIRL - Tekre
HiKaizer - Matsu Itaru

The thread for the Dissenters can be found here:

The Scorpion Emperor - Honor

And for the Loyalists:

Epicurius - Otomo Hayuma
neongrey - Soshi Masami
unzealous - Matsu Mayumi
Mikan - Utaku Kaori
Ettin- Utaku Natsumi
TychoBrahesNose - Kaiu Ginzo

The thread for the Loyalists can be found here:
The Scorpion Emperor - Duty

Again, thanks to everyone who applied! Also, special thanks go to Roland Jones, who was tireless in his efforts to help other people with their characters and promoting the thread, even though he's new to the system himself.

So I've been thinking (a dangerous pastime) that I'm not covering all the bases on the Scorpion Emperor setting here. There's room for more stories than what I have going on, and I think I could fit another group in. I'm not opening a new thread for recruiting for it, just bumping this one, which may sabotage it before it lives, but whatever, I'm throwing it in here anyway as an interest check.

This group would be run under the title The Scorpion Emperor - Compassion, to go alongside the Duty and Honor threads already there. The characters would need to be one of the following:

-Ronin, either Clan Ronin or True Ronin
-Monk
-Nezumi

The premise of this group's campaign would be the disaffected, those outside the law who don't care about who sits the Emerald Throne as much as they do about protecting the weak from those who would cause them harm. You'd be playing protectors of a small village somewhere in the Empire but not in any particular Clan's territory, living with the heimin and eta and working to help them deal with the problems of their daily lives, protecting them from bandits, wandering ogres, or just famine. This isn't about running off to join Toturi's Army, it's about being the only thing standing between this village and total lawlessness and chaos. Think Seven Samurai. Think Yojimbo. Think Zatoichi.

Things I will be looking for in potential applications for this one:

There were some really good applications for the first two groups that I had to pass over not because they were bad characters, but because I wasn't specific in what I was looking for. I felt bad about it. So...
To make it clearer what I'm going to base selections on, in no particular order:

-Does your character have a background? I don't need to see the 20 Questions answered long-form, but you should know the answers to them if pressed.
-Can your character do something besides fight? Have your bases covered for both social and physical encounters, and make your character someone with a hobby outside of the specifics their job calls for. Pick a musical instrument, or an art, or even just be a poet. I will pick well rounded characters over specialists, every time, for l5r.
-Does your character offer something interesting and positive to the group dynamic? Admittedly, without knowing who the other characters are going to be this one can be a bit challenging, but as a rule of thumb if a character seems to me like they're going to be too much at odds with the other applications, well...
-Does your character pile on the disadvantages too thick? I'm not incredibly worried about seeing people pick incredibly trivial disadvantages just to get points, but if the character's going to be hamstrung by the number or type of disadvantages they have, they'll probably be passed over.

Anyone currently playing in Honor or Duty, please do not apply for Compassion as well.

Anyone who is interested but hasn't a lot of familiarity with the game: please feel more than welcome to apply, and if you need help creating a character, hit me up in the evenings (EST) on #badwrongfun, as Ridley. Roland Jones will almost certainly be willing to help too, because he's been awesome about it so far, but I can't volunteer him.

Anyone who applied previously to Honor or Duty but wasn't selected: please by all means submit a character for this, I will give some preference provided all of the above criteria are met to those who were left out last round.

I'll make a decision on whether there's enough interest and if so which characters will be in sometime on February 10th. February 18th.

Just chiming in, I am up for helping anyone who needs it; I don't know a lot of the more advanced stuff, but I can at least help people through character creation and whatnot.

Also, looking through the main book again, people may want to check out the Book of Water (advanced mechanics section), there's a lot of useful stuff back there. It's where the ronin and non-clan monk rules are, but people in the current games may want to see it too, since it also has kata (for bushi) and kiho (for monks and shugenja), plus other things.

Kakita Yoshiaki was the shame of the Crane clan. A mediocre swordsman and a drunkard, he was regularly humiliated and beaten by duelists from other schools, gaining the epithet of “Scabbard holder” for the fact that he was never able to draw a sword in Iaijutsu duels. Dishonored and shamed, he left his Clan after losing a duel against an opponent 10 years younger than him, moving to a small village as he started a new life as a woodworker and fathering a young boy with a peasant woman.

His boy was named Shingen, and even though Yoshiaki left the life of dueling, a small amount of regret still lived on him, regret that led him to start training his son on the way of the sword from youth, instilling in him an obsession in becoming the Emerald Champion. This ambition however, was never fulfilled, as young Shingen soon had to travel through Rokugan as a wanderer after the death of his parents during an outbreak of plague. During the following decades he seeked to survive and improve on his swordsmanship, protecting villages from bandits and selling wooden charms and trinkets with the skills taught by his parents. Now at the advanced age of fifty-five, Shingen wonders to himself if he will die without the chance of redeeming his father’s name and achieving the top of swordsmanship...

What clan does your character belong to? and What family does your character belong to?
None. The son of a disgraced Crane and a peasant, he is not bound to any Clans and families per se.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?

Shingen follows the path of the sword, a Bushi first and foremost.

How would others describe your character's appearance?

A strong and stout man, whose physical prowess has not been dulled by time. Only his rugged face and gray-white hair betrays Shingen’s true age. His body, however, carries many scars from previous combats.

What is your character's primary motivation? and What is your character's highest ambition?

Once Shingen dreamed of becoming the Emerald Champion or a master Duelist capable of impressing even the greatest Iaijutsu masters from the Crane clan... But now he wonders if it’s not better to abandon this dream and settle himself with a family.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?

His deceased father, who tried to make him the Samurai that he could never be.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?

Shingen’s greatest strength is the experience acquired in his lifetime, after winning (and even losing) many battles and living many incidents during his fifty-five years of life. His weakness, is his tendency to infuriate himself with even the smallest slights against his person or his honor.

What does your character think of Bushido?

He tries his best to follow it as a guidance to life, as it was taught to him from youth, but sometimes his own resentment at being a Ronin is on the way of Shingen’s full commitment to the path.

Is your character married?

No, which is a great source of regret for him, as that part of his life was greatly neglected.

Does your character have any prejudices?

Shingen inherited some his father’s grudge against the Cranes, believing them to be arrogant and haughty.

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?

To his own devices mostly, as he wants nothing to do with the Scorpion Emperor.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?

Shingen mostly enjoys carving small wooden statues and practicing his swordsmanship every day. While not a raging alcoholic like his father, he enjoys a bottle of Sake once in a while. His least favorite things are the perceived feeling of stagnation that he is right now, and any insults to him and his family.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?

He often keeps his hands on his Katana or No-dachi’s scabbard when nervous, as if ready to unsheath them at any moment.

What about your character's emotions?

An open and cheerful man, he usually expresses what he feels in a quite open way, be the emotions positive or negative.

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?

As one unaccustomed to actually deal with subordinates, Shingen would most likely scold him heavily, possibly screaming the man’s faults for hours!

How would your character's parents describe her?

A stubborn but good boy, destined to surpass his father!

How religious is your character?

No Gods have shown themselves before him. Why would he believe in their existance?

How will your character die?

Either by a duel gone wrong or by his heart failing, whichever comes first!

Well that took a while to do!

20 Questions:

What clan does your character belong to? and What family does your character belong to?
Yasuhira was born to a poor Shiba family, and inherited his Phoenix parents’ patience and eye for detail.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?
Yasuhira trained in one of the smaller Shiba Bushi dojos to become a yojimbo.

So why is your character a ronin?
Because of his eyes, Yasuhira was thought cursed and shunned by even his own family. To get rid of him, he was assigned as the yojimbo of the disgraced minor lord Isawa Youka. Yasuhira’s career was dead before it began. Lord Isawa fell ill soon after. Before Isawa passed away, Yasuhira begged him for permission to follow his lord in death. Isawa was furious that his young yojimbo would throw his life away for the sake of a tainted old man, denied him the right to junshi and told him to find something actually worth dying for. Isawa passed away, and no-one stepped forward to accept Yasuhira into their service.

How would others describe your character's appearance?
A warrior in his late twenties, Yasuhira is slightly shorter than average and carries himself with a relaxed confidence. He dresses as well as a wandering swordsman can, making sure to keep his kimono clean and in repair.

A less polite observer might not mention any of this, but instead focus on Yasuhira’s disconcerting eyes: His left eye is a light brown, but his right is striking blue.

What is your character's primary motivation?
To find something or someone he can dedicate his life to.

What is your character's highest ambition?
To one day found a dojo.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
His one-time betrothed. Even though their betrothal was arranged and they knew only briefly, they managed to form a deep friendship that has lasted years.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?
Yasuhira’s strength is his deep connection to the Void. His way is that of action without thought.

Of course, his way of living in the moment often ends up backfiring: He often ends up led astray or overcommitting as he doesn’t stop to consider his steps properly.

What does your character think of Bushido?
For Yasuhira, Bushido is less of a guiding principle and more of a philosophical exercise. He rarely thinks “honor demands I do this” or “does this person have courage”. He simply tries to stay true to his heart when it is time to act, and only later allows himself to question if he indeed did the right thing.

Is your character married?
His arranged betrothal fell through when his lord passed away and Yasuhira was forced on the path of the ronin.

Does your character have any prejudices?
It may be unfair, but it annoys him how certain samurai brag about how righteous, honourable and pure they are. As a result, he habitually writes most Cranes and Lions off as insufferable.

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?
Were his old sensei to ever call upon him, Yasuhiro would answer immediately. Their relationship was never friendly or warm, but Yasuhiro was always determined to learn and his sensei respected that drive.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?
Yasuhira loves the cold, crispy winters of the Phoenix lands.

He hates the spicy Scorpion food. It’s not that he’s afraid of being poisoned or anything silly like that, it just disagrees with his bowels.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
Yasuhira is an unsatiable snacker. Put a plate of pickles in front of him and he’ll empty it without even noticing.

What about your character's emotions?
He does his best to keep a lid on them, since the human heart is a fickle thing, and easily strays from the right path. It’s never quite easy, especially when facing another’s suffering.

Sometimes Yasuhira wonders if he should simply retire to a monastery somewhere and spend his years peacefully, studying the Tao. So far, every time he’s set out again, looking for a greater purpose at the end of the road.

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?
He’d reprimand the poor fool immediately with a few choice words and follow it up later with an appropriate punishment. Practice makes perfect, they say, so enough practice should ensure it never happens again, right?

How would your character's parents describe him?
A cursed child, if they would acknowledge him at all. The relationship between Yasuhira and his parents is chillingly formal at best. His father will never admit it, but he is secretly glad that Yasuhira ended up a ronin: He is afraid his son will bring doom on wherever he eventually settles.

How religious is your character?
He prefers meditating on the Tao of Shinsei to worshipping the Fortunes, but his Phoenix education has rubbed in too deep for him to turn his back on a temple.

How will your character die?
Fighting against an impossible foe.

Siivola I hate to pick nits, but your loyalty question cuts off mid sentence. Also, not that I object to the idea, but due to the alt timeline the Scorpion have never spent time in the burning sands, so their food's not influenced there and spicy yet.

Isn't it amazing all the little details that an alt timeline shifts? Amazing and very, very quibbly.

(Seriously you don't have to change that detail.)

Siivola
Dec 23, 2012

You know, I did actually notice the bit about Scorpion food being influenced by their time in the Burning Sands. I was just hoping you wouldn't notice. I guess I could just make it Mantis cuisine.

Thanks for the heads-up on the missing answer, I think I wandered off halfway through answering and forgot to actually finish what I was writing.

I'm perfectly fine with the idea of Scorpion food being spicy just to make the other clans more uncomfortable, but the Unicorn cuisine is canonically spicy and unpleasant for the others already, especially because they're known to eat red meat, if you're worried about finding an option that's in there.

That bit I don't mind if we leave though. It's like how we have some Utaku even though canonically at the time they were still the Otaku.

Which is a dumb name so I just said oh okay we'll pretend like they never were the Otaku.

Same deal.

So it's deadline night and I have two apps for Ronin. I'm going to leave things open, just in case, but it's a pretty good bet that unless we're looking at a bunch of last minute submissions there's just not enough interest for the Ronin-game at this time...

I'm extending the deadline for ronin apps to February 18th, having now made a link to the Ronin recruit within the OP and stuff to make it clearer.

20 Questions:

What clan does your character belong to? and What family does your character belong to?
Tomoe was born to the Shinjo, but from the day she could mount a horse it was clear that she belonged with the Utaku. These days, though, she belongs to nobody.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?
A bushi, through and through, even now.

So why is your character a ronin?
Tomoe loved the purity of battle. When she and her battle-sisters rode out, it was the thundering of the gods and their enemies quailed.

But all things come to an end. The last thing Tomoe remembers seeing was a desperate ronin, likely a former Lion, slashing at her eyes even as he crumpled around her spear. She has never seen again.

A woman who cannot see, cannot ride. An Utaku who cannot ride, cannot fight. No one cast Shinjo Tomoe out but herself- her shame and despair at never being able to ride again were enough. Her family would have been happy to support her... but what samurai could abide such an existence? So Tomoe walked off into the night to die, and to her continued surprise found herself still living.

How would others describe your character's appearance?
Tomoe would be strikingly beautiful, if not for the terrible mark that mars her face from side to see, leaving nothing but scarred flesh where her eyes once were, though she keeps it covered as much as possible with a simple band of white cloth. She wears simple clothing and uses a stick to guide her steps.

What is your character's primary motivation?
To protect others from despair and suffering, for she knows what that feels like.

What is your character's highest ambition?
To find a way to ride again.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
She has no one, now- the only things that she trusts are her blade and her heart.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?
Tomoe’s strength is her dedication and determination. Her weakness is her inability to adapt to circumstances- she would rather fight the tide than swim with it.

What does your character think of Bushido?
Tomoe still believes in Bushido, through and through- though perhaps her continued predicament has taught her some of the lessons of Compassion and Sincerity more strongly than she perhaps believed before.

Is your character married?
Yes. She gave that up when she left. She does not think of it any more.

Does your character have any prejudices?
The cruelty of the high toward the low is now far more evident to one who is at the bottom. To her embarrassment, Tomoe finds herself automatically detesting many of the samurai she meets- at least those who forget the virtue of Compassion.

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?
Her sisters in battle remain, in Tomoe's mind, her closest friends, though she cannot bear to face them again. If they called, she would come.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?
Tomoe loves being around horses, which is convenient, as she often ends up quartered in stables these days.

She hates having to listen to people being mistreated while being unable to do anything about it.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
Tomoe has never really accepted the whole blindness thing, and will attempt to stare down and point at things as normal- often inaccurately.

What about your character's emotions?
Not having eyes has some advantages- it's hard to see Tomoe's emotions. She tries to keep a lid on them, regardless, so as not to invite trouble.

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?
With a calm but firm lecture and no second chances.

How would your character's parents describe him?
A daughter lost to battle in her own way, even if she did not die on the field. They speak of her as if she was dead. Their pride in her is clear, as well as their despair.

How religious is your character?
Tomoe went through a religious phase, but when the kami did not restore her sight she turned her back on them too. These days, staying alive takes up her time.

How will your character die?
Standing up for the downtrodden in the face of whatever odds may come.

Once per turn, you can Tribute 1 WATER monster you control (except this card) to Special Summon 1 WATER monster from your hand. The monster Special Summoned by this effect is destroyed if "Raging Eria" is removed from your side of the field.
Second attempt. Going for a lawkeeper/vigilante type.

20 Questions:

What clan does your character belong to? and What family does your character belong to?
None, particularly. She was raised in that odd grey area between ronin and peasant lawkeepers.
She's an orphan, and "Maruishi" was't actually her parents' name. Once, she was asked her name, and when pressed after just saying "Fumiko" gave "Maruishi."
She's a member of Tawagoto's Army.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?
A bushi.

So why is your character a ronin?
She was orphaned, and raised as a lawkeeper. She's still doing it. A member of Tawagoto's Army helped her out of a problematic spot as a child, standing up for another kid against a small group of thugs, and raised her in the group.
Her natural sense of honor and justice flourished there, and she set out a few years ago to gain some more breadth of experience.

How would others describe your character's appearance?
A little scruffy. Kind of short. Calm.
Generally cheery, but gets serious quickly when dealing with the law.
Plain traveler's clothes, a sword and a jitte at her hip. Hair bundled up.

What is your character's primary motivation?
Hunt down and punish lawbreakers. Protect the people.

What is your character's highest ambition?
To be an actually properly recognized magistrate, someone who could take errant samurai to task.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
Kenta, her mentor. He raised her, for the most part, and taught her everything she knows.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?
She is incredibly tenacious. Pursuing criminals drives her to great heights, and gives her a deep well of confidence and drive.
However, she tends to get in over her head. She's a little overconfident, and has difficulty biting her tongue and ignoring immediate injustice in the pursuit of a higher, long-term goal.
Personally, she views her martial skills as important, respectable, but still in need of improvement. She can always improve.

What does your character think of Bushido?
Proper samurai have some messed up priorities, but the tenets of Bushido are vital to her life.

Is your character married?
No.

Does your character have any prejudices?
Not particularly. She tends to have a dim view of "reformed" criminals.
That said, she does understand what drives people to crime, and is willing to forgive actions done in desperation. Just not excessive and sadistic banditry as a way of life, or crimes done for personal gain above mere survival.
She also has a dim view of samurai. Too many don't care for the common people.

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?
Kenta. The Army. The people.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?
Playing go, although she's not particularly good at it.
Fire. Fire terrifies her. She hates this, and tries desperately to keep it hidden.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
Not exactly. She tends to get antsy during long talks, having an urge to get up and move around, even if she's the one talking.

What about your character's emotions?
She keeps a tight handle on her emotions, especially rage. She fears her own potential for excess and cruelty.
Although she's driven to pursue criminals, ultimately it's for the people. She loves times when she can relax and be social, without fear of bandits or thieves.

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?
Calmly but firmly for most transgressions, but anything like accepting a bribe or using brutality or excessive force, or any sort of crime, would probably make her fly off the handle.

How would your character's parents describe him?
Well they're dead. Kenta thinks she's doing a fine job, though.

How religious is your character?
Ultimately, she is deeply suspicious of "the Fortunes" and the like. She prays, but in her heart feels this is more like giving tribute/protection money to a cruel and vindictive warlord or boss.

How will your character die?
In a dark alley, stabbed in the back.

Nezumi Racial Abilities:
Bite: A Nezumi can inflict normal unarmed damage with its bite, and can chew through wood and soft stone at the rate of 1’ per hour.

Burrowing: Nezumi can burrow through soft earth at one tenth their normal movement speed.
If they wish to leave a stable tunnel behind, they may only burrow one foot per hour.

Disease Resistance: All Nezumi are immune to most normal diseases and infections. If the GM judges a disease sufficiently virulent to infect a Nezumi,
the character still gets a +3k0 bonus to any rolls made to resist its effects.

Nezumi Agility: All Nezumi gain +2k0 on any Athletics rolls that involve climbing or jumping, and on any Sleight of Hand rolls made to escape bonds.

Nezumi Scent: A heightened sense of scent grants Nezumi +1k1 on any Hunting Skill rolls where scent may be a factor.

Pheromones: Nezumi can leave pheromone trails that indicate gender, tribe, and the direction in which they are traveling.
These are imperceptible to humans, but can be detected by other Nezumi up to twenty feet away. Pheromone trails linger up to one month,
unless washed away earlier.
Some animals, notably horses and dogs, become extremely aggressive when they encounter Nezumi pheromones.

Swift: All Nezumi have Swift 2.

Taint Immunity: All Nezumi are completely immune to the Shadowlands Taint and, consequently, cannot cast maho spells.
20 Questions:

What clan does your character belong to? What family does your character belong to?
Inuniku does not have a tribe, he ran-ran away to protect them from Tomorrow.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?
Inuniku is Ithith. He finds treasures and information and enemies and then he puts them in his sack.

So why is your character a ronin?
Tomorrow is always a step behind Inuniku, ever since many many Yesterdays ago. Inuniku went to be Named, and the Rememberer looked-looked at Inuniku and Tomorrow caught him and Inuniku ran-ran until he was here.

How would others describe your character's appearance?
Inuniku met a samurai once. He said Inuniku was a blackened, skulking little wretch with red greedy eyes and wandering paws. He got angry and chased Inuniku when he-he returned the compliment.

What is your character's primary motivation?
Survive. Hunt treasures. Eat good food forever.

What is your character's highest ambition?
Kill Tomorrow forever-ever. Tomorrow hates Inuniku. Inuniku thinks Tomorrow fears Inuniku's True Name and killed the Rememberer to save itself.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
Bald-Head-Fists-of-Fire was a No-Hair-Pink-Skin. He found Inuniku. Fed Inuniku. Chased away Tomorrow. Gave Inuniku a name. He said he was from Order-of-Nameless-Gift tribe. He said this is a thing called Destiny. Bald-Head-Fists-of-Fire went to sleep Yesterday and was caught by Tomorrow, but Inuniku still feels like he is watching.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?
Inuniku is brave-brave and clever-clever. But his Name is hiding. How can Inuniku outrun Tomorrow without his Name?

What does your character think of Bushido?
Bu'ch-do is good-good! Many samurai killing themselves everywhere, leaving treasures behind.

Is your character married?
What is married? Does it taste good?

Does your character have any prejudices?
No-Hair-Pink-Skins would be smart if they weren't so stupid. Always slice-slicing Nezumi or each other instead of Tomorrow.

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?
Grasping Paws tribe. Inuniku is a great defender of Grasping Paws, he protects them by staying away from them.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?
Inuniku loves food! Inuniku loves rice and noodles and eggs and deer and small rocks and pheasants and horses and peacocks and bark and rabbits and pigs and chickens and dogs and fish and...[so on for five minutes]

Inuniku hates goblins and being yelled at and Tomorrow and not having food.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
Bald-Head-Fists-of-Fire had a long beard that he stroked when he was think-thinking. Inuniku doesn't have a beard but he likes to pretend he does.

What about your character's emotions?
Is hungry an emotion? How about sleepy-sleepy?

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?
Inuniku would hit him with his stick. Inuniku learned all the most important things from sticks.

How would your character's parents describe him?
They wouldn't. Inuniku is cursed and Inuniku is Forgotten. But Inuniku remembers that he was a good pup that did not endanger the tribe. He found many shiney-shinies and the tribe expected great things from Inuniku.

How religious is your character?
Bald-Head-Fists-of-Fire tried to teach Inuniku a thing called Tao. Inuniku said it didn't sound good to eat. Bald-Head-Fists-of-Fire said Tao feeds the spirit, not the body. Inuniku doesn't think much of Tao.

How will your character die?
Someday Tomorrow will catch Inuniku and Inuniku will be gone. Maybe he will leave a Name behind?

20 Questions:

What clan does your character belong to? and What family does your character belong to?
Marumaru is of no clan. Her parents were ronin, and her sensei was a Kenku. She earned her name - Marumaru - because when her sensei, Arai, first found her, she refused to speak to him for nearly a month. He started calling her Marumaru because he was tired of just calling her "girl" and the name stuck.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?
A bushi, definitely.

So why is your character a ronin?
When the coup began, Urara's father and mother journeyed to Dragon lands. Her mother was distantly related to the Mirumoto and rumor said that Togashi was looking for able warriors. This rumor was unfounded, but it hardly mattered. On an isolated mountain path the family was ambushed by bandits. Her mother and father were killed in the ensuing fight.

Fortunately for the young girl, this particular forest path as a favorite place for Arai, a kenku swordsman. Hearing the fighting, he went to see what was going on. Arai had no love for bandits, and strongly discouraged them from hiding on his mountain. He found a strange scene - a small girl, no more than eight, holding off a half dozen bandits with a sword as big as she was. One of the bandits was clutching a wounded hand as the others laughed at him, but their archer was also stringing his bow.

The bandits saw Arai just as he struck his first blow. He cut them down easily. But then the archer raised to fire at Arai while the kenku's back was tuned. Arai had been waiting for this, but he was shocked when the girl chose this moment to rush forward yelling and cut the shocked archer down. Arai was surprised and impressed by her courage, not to mention the fact that she'd managed to do it without getting herself killed. At that moment he decided to make her his student, and took her back to his hut high on the mountain and spent the next decade teaching her the art of the sword.

About a year ago, he declared Marumaru ready to seek her destiny and kicked her out of the nest. Since then she's traveled looking for a chance to prove herself as a samurai and a bushi, while trying to figure out normal society based on old memories and kenku explanations.

How would others describe your character's appearance?
Marumaru is tall and strong. She obviously spends most of her time outside, as evidenced by her tanned skin and sun-lightened hair. She might be pretty in a rough sort of way, but she doesn't spend a lot of time on her appearance. Her gear is well cared for, but worn and mostly second-hand, some of it clearly antique, random bits Arai collected over the years. Only her swords are of first quality.

What is your character's primary motivation?
What Marumaru remembers most about her parents were their stories of heroic and noble samurai. She wants to become what she idealizes to honor their memories.

What is your character's highest ambition?
To prove herself to be a worthy and heroic samurai.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
Her sensei, Arai. He's not just her teacher, he's essentially a parent. Or least a weird uncle.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?
Marumaru's greatest strength is her elan, her courage and the eagerness she displays in every challenge she takes on. If she sees something that needs doing - especially something that could be considered heroic - she'll throw all her effort into it.

Her greatest weakness is her lack of experience. Arai trained her well, but she's too young to have much practical experience herself, and trying to make sense of Rokugani society from a kenku's history lessons is tricky business. Marumaru can be much too hard on herself when she fails, often perceiving errors where no one else sees them, or dwelling on mistakes overlong.

What does your character think of Bushido?
Marumaru sees bushido as the guiding principles of her life - how else can one be a samurai, let alone a heroic one, without following bushido?

Is your character married?
No. Growing up in a stone hut halfway up a hidden mountain with a crow-man provides few opportunities for courtship.

Does your character have any prejudices?
Marumaru despises bandits, which can be problematic when traveling among ronin.

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?
Arai.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?
Marumaru loves sweets, but hates admitting this or letting others find out. She also loves challenges - the tougher the odds, the more focused and intense she becomes.

Marumaru hates having to go out in the rain. She also hates anyone who displays cowardice or refuses to stand up for themselves, to the extent they are able.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
When confused by something - a common occurrence since she rejoined the human world - Marumaru will rub her forehead with the heel of her left hand (she learned quickly not to do it with her sword hand for many reasons).

What about your character's emotions?
Marumaru is fairly open with her emotions. She's very straightforward and has a bit of a temper. In general, she's best described as intense and very focused.

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?
By giving them a speech to inspire them to do better.

How would your character's parents describe him?
Her parents would have called her as a happy but sometimes troublesome child, always getting herself into things. They indulged her shamelessly. Arai would call her a dutiful and brave student, though stubborn as a rock.

How religious is your character?
Her exposure to kenku beliefs and lack of instruction in her childhood means she finds religious devotion slightly odd, and has relatively little patience with displays of piety, especially when there's work to be done. It is not so much that she disbelieves as she does not really see why it matters.

How will your character die?
In battle, in a defiant last stand against some powerful foe and overwhelming odds.

Qiu

Qiu is an old man, but that does not make him weak. His life has been spent in service to the Brotherhood of Shinsei, seeking out greatness and encouraging it. He does not see much difference between ronin and true samurai, as a result - what matters is what is done with it. Rokugan needs heroes. Indeed, Qiu doesn't really mind if the heroes are not samurai at all.

Since the rise of the Scorpion Emperor, in fact, Qiu has turned his attentions to the common people. Above all else, they need heroes. After all, in a time of war and chaos, a storm of change comes. And storms can destroy that which lacks the strength to stand and the flexibility to bend.

For the past ten years, Qiu has dedicated much of his time to raising a young girl he calls Jiao. He found her in a burning estate, and he honestly does not know if she was born noble or servant. He has been teaching her martial arts in either case, trying to guide her according to the Tao of Shinsei. It has not been easy, especially since Qiu has never been able to restrain himself from giving what he has to others - he carries only enough to feed himself and Jiao, and nothing more. Mostly Jiao.

20 Questions:

What clan does your character belong to? and What family does your character belong to?
None. Qiu has never had a clan - he was born of a farming family and joined the Brotherhood of Shinsei at an early age, to avoid inheritance disputes. He considers himself to be Jiao's father, but he has no family name and nor does she.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?
A monk.

So why is your character a ronin?
People need heroes. Heroes need training and guidance. Above all, the common people need heroes to protect them, and these heroes must be guided righteously. Qiu, as a member of the Order of Heroes, is dedicated to being that guide. He serves among the ronin because they need the most help and guidance, and are the closest to the common people.

How would others describe your character's appearance?
Old, but hard. Qiu has many wrinkles, but his body is still strong and wiry. He has aged like leather, really.

What is your character's primary motivation?
To guide the next generation of heroes and prepare them to protect the people of Rokugan.

What is your character's highest ambition?
To ensure that Rokugan has the heroes it needs.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
His adopted daughter, Jiao. She is Qiu's closest confidante and his greatest joy. He hides nothing from her.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?
Qiu's greatest strength is his boundless idealism. He does not give up, no matter how many of his chosen heroes fail, and he will never give up on one of his heroes. He will do anything he can to help and guide them, and to prepare them for their arduous tasks. Without that determination and idealism, he would long since have retired to a monastery.

His greatest weakness, however, is his compassion. He has too much of it. Qiu is the kind of man who would give a beggar his last piece of food, even when he himself was hungry. He cannot help but listen to any troubles, and it can make him gullible at times.

What does your character think of Bushido?
Bushido is a good guideline, but it must sometimes be bent in order to live a virtuous life by the teachings of Shinsei. Flexibility is key - a stiff adherence will only break you.

Is your character married?
No. A wife would not really be able to put up with the constant wandering, and it's hard enough to feed two people.

Does your character have any prejudices?
Qiu is inclined to distrust those who hold high rank. It is not that they cannot be heroes - they absolutely can. However, the Tao of Shinsei is what guides him, and he knows that power does not flow down from the top. The common nature of that belief among samurai means that he often finds daimyos and other leaders to be arrogant.

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?
Jiao.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?
Qiu enjoys quiet music, cool breezes and birds. He is very fond of birds in general, and other small animals. He also adores Jiao, and as best he can given his ascetic lifestyle tries to dote on her.

Qiu hates arrogance most of all - it makes his job much harder when people won't listen to his advice. Beyond that, he strongly dislikes swamps and storms, because they make his life uncomfortable.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
Qiu often unconsciously moves his hands through ritual mudras while thinking, to focus his concentration. He tends to touch objects and even people as he passes by, as if to reassure himself that the world is still there.

What about your character's emotions?
Qiu tends to conceal his anger as best he can. He is open about quieter, less enthusiastic emotions, and he can be very stern with his heroes, but he does not like to shout or raise his voice, and so he tries to keep his emotions controlled. They are easy to read, they just don't get very loud.

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?
A sharp strike on the wrist, a lecture on the nature of virtue and some sort of instructive task or training.

How would your character's parents describe him?
His parents would likely, when they were alive, have described Qiu as the quiet son, who spent too much time thinking and not working. They were not unhappy to see him go to the Brotherhood, really - it meant less to feed, and his contemplative nature kept him from getting a lot of farmwork done.

How religious is your character?
Qiu is a devout follower of the Tao of Shinsei. He knows the Fortunes exist and that the gods influence the world, and he is more than happy to try to help them.

How will your character die?
Ensuring that heroism continues and that people remain safe and happy. Possibly it will be of old age, leaving his 'daughter' to take on the burden.

20 Questions:

What clan did your character belong to? and What family did your character belong to?
None. Chinmoku was never a samurai. However his family were farmers living in Lion lands, and worked for their Lion overlords as would be expected. However, due to increasing turmoil they could not spare the food to feed the new child. So from an early age he was left on the steps of the nearest monastery.

Is your character a bushi, courtier or shugenja?
A monk.

So why is your character a ronin?
Enlightenment will set you free. But the path to such a thing is shrouded in many dangers, including false paths that will lead you astray. Chinmoku is perhaps a true example of this. He is a member of the Shinmaki Order, a small sect of the Shintao that study the controversial Diamond Sutra, which holds interesting implications about Shinsei and the Seven Thunders. He is found amongst ronin because the truth is found in the least likely of places, and by experiencing the world from this level, perhaps it will become apparent.

How would others describe your character's appearance?
A strange-looking monk whose age is hard to determine, Chinkmoku is tall, with sinewy musculature leaving him rather thin. He dresses as you may expect any monk to do, his outfit is coarse and plain, well-worn and perfect for travelling, a conical straw hat is worn. The oddness becomes swiftly apparent as his skin has been painted or dusted heavily.

However he seems to radiate an almost palpable aura of calm and centeredness. The fact it seems to remain no matter whose company he is in and no matter the setting causes some to become disquieted. His strange appearance merely adds to this.

What is your character's primary motivation?
To see the world, experience it and its people and see how they live their lives and follow their own mantras. From this he hopes to gain perspective on his path.

What is your character's highest ambition?
To achieve true enlightenment. Even Chinmoku truly doesn't know what this might mean in the end.

Who is the person your character trusts most in the world?
The abbot in the monastery in which he was raised. Although beyond such things as having parental figures, substitute or real, Chinmoku feels eternally grateful for being allowed to experience this, not to mention by default the abbot should be the most enlightened in the monastery, and therefore the best.

What is your character's greatest strength and weakness?
Chinkmoku's strength is his connection to all things via the Void. The steps he has taken on the path to enlightenment have gifted him much.

However, this feeling of ultimate connection leaves him in the end detached from the 'ephemera' that he so readily dismisses, causing him to tend to have a simplistic view of mortal concerns. If left unattended he might end up losing himself in his meditations of the Shintao, and accomplish little.

What does your character think of Bushido?
Although Chinmoku understands that people need something to gather strength from, he feels that Bushido is ultimately one more burden on the road of life. Not that it should be ignored, pragmatism would stress of its current importance. It is just so much focus is put on the word, and not enough on the spirit of the code and he feels that this focus ultimately leads people astray from perceiving the world as it truly is.

Is your character married?
No. Monks are not allowed to marry, and those that were once married are no longer recognised as such. Chinmoku has pondered once or twice what the experience might be like. Ultimately he feels that it would merely add another chain that would weigh you down away from enlightenment. Enlightenment is not for everyone, the same can be said of marriage.

Does your character have any prejudices?
Not true prejudices. However he does feel pity for some. Monks of other orders, for instance, for they are obviously taking the wrong path and will ultimately end up frustrated. Still, he sees no wrong in studying their ideals, perhaps in case some aspect or shred of theology is a piece of what is true.

He feels pity for the samurai for they are wrapped up so heavily in chains and burdens of obligation and blood and clan and etiquette that they can never truly see what is there, merely what their mind tells them that there is.

To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?
Again, the abbot of the monastery that he was raised in, Tiruzen is who he the most loyal to.

What are your character's favorite and least favorite things?
He likes to be able to sit in peace and quiet and observe the world around him. This need not be in total seclusion.

He dislikes excessive social complexities. Although he can respect others desire for such things, ultimately he feels they are made to make everyone unhappy.

Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
He sometimes quietly hums to himself a disjointed and meaningless tune. But it is always the same tune.

What about your character's emotions?
Not one to ever admit to any feelings, Chinmoku does not tend to feel any extremes - having long ago centered himself away from concerns that might provoke such things. Largely he feels emotions on behalf of others, sorrow for those who are entrapped by societal mores, joy for those that feel a sliver of freedom in whatever situation they are in.

Ultimately he has a burning curiosity for existence itself, and so his emotions tend to follow based on how able he is to study and learn from such things.

How would your character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?
He would try to remind the subordinate of their purpose and what the aim of this purpose is and how what they did or did not do would be in relation to this. If they repeat, then he might use more forceful methods until they are able to understand the significance.

How would your character's parents describe him?
Having never seen him since he was a babe, his parents would not recognise him. Instead they see an imposing but reverant monk who seemed... open, and strangely polite and talkative.

How religious is your character?
A devout follower of the Tao of Shinsei, Chinmoku's following of such things are marked by his devotion to the Diamond Sutra. Consequently he has notions about the nature of Shinsei and the Thunders that some might find baffling.

How will your character die?
Having taken a step too quickly on the path to enlightenment, and being struck down by some danger that would block this path.

If possible, picking this time was even harder than the last round! I liked everyone's characters and it definitely, definitely was not easy to choose just six. I did, though.

Plutonis – Shingen
Siivola – Yasuhira
K Prime – Tomoe
Shardix - Inuniku
Comrade Gorbash – Marumaru
Mors Rattus – Qiu

I'll be opening a new thread in a few weeks to recruit for Courage, which will be in the same timeline. Zachol has withdrawn from Compassion, and is guaranteed a spot in any upcoming Scorpion Emperor game he chooses to join, as thanks for making this easier for me.

Compassion thread can be found here.

Oh, hey, monk players. Was looking on the AEG forums to see if they had answers to some questions of mine, and I found something relevant to you guys; apparently whether monks get 0 in Status or Glory is different on different pages of the book, but the correct one is Glory 0, Status 1, to fit with how they don't gain Glory easily. Noticed that some people had it down one way, some the other.

Errata thread I was reading is here; there are other interesting things in there. Still haven't found the question I'm looking for, but it's worth a read. Learning a lot of other things in there.

I only now realized that Maigo no Musha didn't actually come into being until the War of Spirits. I guess I should fix that disadvantage, no?

Okay, while I linked the errata thread, as there's a lot of relevant stuff in there, it's so spread out (and I felt like reading the topic again because I think I missed something) that I decided to compile whatever seemed relevant to the games (stuff pertaining to schools taken and general rules questions), with links to the appropriate posts. However, it ended up really, really long, so I'm asking here if I should post it or not first. It covers quite a few things, to say the least, some of which are really important, but on the other hand I single-spaced it and it still takes up two and a quarter pages in OpenOffice. Like I said, there's a lot of errata that'd apply to the characters in these games, and I just went with PC schools and general rules stuff.

One thing I should definitely point out immediately, though, as it is a major thing for one of our characters, is that apparently the rules for non-Brotherhood characters taking kiho, including Togashi monks, differs from page 261 and 266, and it's the former that's correct. This means that Win only gets to use his relevant Ring, not Ring+SR, when qualifying for kiho. The writers do mention that individual GMs should decide otherwise, though, so Winson, you should talk to Ridley ASAP.

Is there any LBS conversion errata?

MollyMetroid
Jan 20, 2004

Trout Clan Daimyo
Probably not, given the fact that there's not even a non-broken version of the LBS conversion on their site (which they have been informed of repeatedly by fans since it went up, I discovered in my own search for one that wasn't broken, so they're well aware of it.)

I mean basically a bunch of fans went, hey let's convert LBS to 4e, AEG went, oh hey that's cool we approve, and that's how that came to be, as far as I can tell.

Infrastructure will be about being peasants maintaining the imperial highway, and the travelers they encounter in their work. It will be airing on Thursday nights on Comedy Central next season. I'd tell you more, but we're still in contractual discussions about casting and scripting.
