i'm gonna share this here even though it's not strictly pop music because

1. Old Town Road brought the idea of trap-country to the masses and this is the next step in that evolution
2. God Bless the Broken Road is basically a pop-country standard at this point

Donald Glover/Childish Gambino's new album is back up streaming at https://donaldgloverpresents.com/, and available to purchase from the usual suspects. Just downloaded mine with some Amazon promotional credit. The song "Time" is a duet with Ariana Grande, and it's the standout so far.

Just Google futurenostalgia.mp3.exe and download the first thing you find. What's the worst that could happen.

On the plus side, she's decided to push up the release date to Friday so you won't have to wait as long.

Break My Heart is definitely the stand out to me, but I am a total sucker for the White Town sample on Love Again.

I'm not super keen on the last couple, not that they're bad but it's a bit they rob it of momentum a bit right at the end. Overall though, every song individually is good and it's a great album.

"Tell that to Zod's snapped neck!"

Future Nostalgia gives me very strong The Fame-era Lady Gaga vibes, but it's way better than that album because it's not a debut and instead a cohesive album by an artist who knows what she is. (it is not better than The Fame Monster though, because that's where Gaga figured out where she was going and those songs are way way darker than The Fame)

edit: also i appreciate the message of Boys Will Be Boys but it feels very out of place on this album.

They seem like outtakes from a totally different album. Possibly a Meghan Trainor album.

yeah you could chop those last two off without much complaining. Good in Bed feels like a fun B-side and Boys Will Be Boys feels like a serious single released after some big event happens

honestly The Man might actually be the best "talkin' about feminism pop song" that's come around in a while. I really don't like If I Were a Boy, Boys Will Be Boys is fine, I think the biggest competition would be Kesha's Woman, but that's more of a girl power thing than a song about institutional sexism.

To be honest, if you just put [Bonus Track] in the title of Good in Bed and Boys Will Be Boys, I'd totally let it go. I know I can just cut the album off at 9 tracks anyway but it would be cool to feel that was the intention and they didn't need to be treated as a core part of the album.

I think even if it's not a single event the past few years (and also all the other years before them) give ample space for basically anyone who feels the desire to make a "talkin' about feminism pop song", I can't promise I'll listen to them all but I wouldn't say this isn't an appropriate time for very serious songs about how many terrible men continue to get away with terrible things.

That said, you're wrong about which one is the best because it's Rich, White, Straight Men so Kesha's got that in the bag in perpetuity.

"Tell that to Zod's snapped neck!"

look, I'm aware that "I feel bad for Taylor Swift" is just an incredibly silly statement generally, but as far as celebrities go, she's having a pretty bad year between finding out her mom has a brain tumor while getting treatment for her breast cancer and then having to cancel her entire tour because of this epidemic.

which is why out of all of the performances on the Heroes And Brands Televised Spectacular, the one that really got to me was Taylor singing Soon You'll Get Better, which was a song written about her mom getting cancer treatment and not being able to handle it at all, which is an incredibly relatable thing and Soon You'll Get Better is easily one of her best songs.

I mean I know you're right long term but grief and loss are things you can't use money to insulate yourself from, and given that Taylor's been really private the last few years she could very easily have gone through all of this without really saying much to anyone, so opening up in this way is unique and honest and interesting.
