I'm gonna pretend that those jokes in the CRJ video about how someone should sign her and that she's gonna be making coffee soon are meant to tell her publicist how terrible they are at their job.

Because her publicist is terrible at their job. An album as good as Emotion should have been bigger.

Everything else you said is fine but death of the author is a perfectly acceptable style of art criticism especially when its a work of multiple creators. I think you're mistaking that for the "cry for help" idea.

But it is offensively bad, yeah.

It would be death of the author if he was ignoring authorial intent, but he's not. Instead he's speculating about Jepsen's intent, quite frankly in a way that is insulting to her intelligence

I usually am not into pop, although my wife got me into Lady Gaga, and now we've seen her live twice and I think the world of her talent.

But holy crap, after so many people being so enthusiastic about Carly Rae Jepsen's E.MO.TION, I gave it a chance and now I'm a little obsessed with it. It's great driving music with its '80s retro sound and synthpop beats, which is perfect because I've really gotten into the Chromatics and the other acts on the Italians Do It Better label this year, most of whom have similar '80s retro synthpop vibes (think of the Drive soundtrack).

I think "L.A. Hallucinations" has to be my favorite song from the album for that killer beat behind the chorus, but there are so many great ones. It's rare to hear any pop album that isn't just a few songs obviously meant to be hit singles, surrounded by filler. And the sad thing is, even though I do listen to pop radio sometimes (I feel like I should at least experience all music before judging and/or dismissing it), I NEVER hear CRJ on the radio aside from "Call Me Maybe" (which does nothing for me). That album should have catapulted her into the pop A-list, but I think she is still dismissed as a one-hit wonder, isn't she? Or is she?

I was also surprised to learn she was the female singer/rapper on that recent Target commercial with the cover of "It Takes Two." For some reason, I always find it sexy when girl singers do that talk-sing-rap thing, so I wondered who it was when the short commercials started with the "Now look what you made me do, you and me, baby, it takes two" line. And it was her! Never would have guessed.

Not a fan. And I know her new song, which is why I was surprised that line was featured so prominently in the other song from the Target ad a few months earlier. Maybe she saw the ad and was inspired.

Carly Rae Jepsen did a live interview / three song acoustic performance last night for a New Yorker Festival event. So far she's written about 80 songs for her next album. 80. And she's still not done writing.

Also, look at that emerald green velour jumpsuit she wore. Look at it:

Finally, Cut to the Feeling sounds amazing, even acoustically: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2IsMwmImiU

LDR is way too big for it these days, but I think I'd like to see her in some 1960s-Greenwich Village-style club.

And just going straight through Ultraviolence.
