Man of the Woods is out. I'm 6 tracks in and it sounds loving nothing like Bon Iver or the woods. Americana with 808s indeed lmao

I'd actually say the bad ones far outweigh the excellent ones, at least after my first listen. And yeah, it is too long in addition to having a lovely ratio of good songs:bad songs.

JT album is a solid 7/10 to me. It's 3-4 tracks too long but for the most part it's a smooth fun r&b album. It's not his strongest work but I don't get the vitriolic hatred surrounding this album at all, it's too inoffensive and earnest and goofy for me to imagine having a strong negative reaction to this

I'm just real disappointed because 20/20 Experience (1 of 2, not 2 because that album is more lovely b-sides from part 1 than its own thing) is legit one of my favorite albums ever and one I still listen to regularly years after its release. I think it's one of those rare start to finish perfect albums. It was full of weird experimental poo poo that I wouldn't have expected from loving Justin Timberlake. This one has some good moments, but nothing like that album did. And I wasn't expecting them to be the exact same album or anything, but this one's mostly by the numbers and it feels like a step down from 20/20 pt. 1 :(

Instead of being an album I listen to all the way through for years like that one was, this is probably gonna drop off my radar entirely real soon.

I'm giving it another listen now and it's not hitting me any harder than it did the first time.

Oh no
Don’t care for Man of the Woods, personally. Probably two or three songs I can see playing again, which I guess isn’t too bad for an album, but most of the rest of it gave me the vibe that it was very Starbucks, or more to the point a lot was basically country hiding behind a thin bland r&b wrapper. Which I get, but I’ll pass.

I also get the weirdly strong feeling that clips from Montana will be in a car commercial within a few years.

20/20 is one of my favorite pop albums ever but I'm fine with JT making a light comfy dad-pop album for his family, he's already put in work and made some classic albums. He's old and has a wife and kid and has nothing to prove to anyone at this point in his career. I'm mostly just glad that he's embracing the fact that he's a dorky uncool dad now and he's not trying too hard to make an album that sounds hip and trendy like Taylor Swift did (aside from Supplies, which is the weakest song on the album)

Anyways, MGMT is dropping the best pop album of the year next Friday and I'm probably going to be listening to that for months on end.

Morning Light is Justin Timberlake becoming a lame dad in a 4 minute song. There's no music video for it yet, but you can just picture the khaki shorts and sunglasses he'd be wearing in it.

That last paragraph, drat.

quote:

Timberlake is performing at his second Super Bowl halftime show as a solo artist this weekend. He’s returning to the stage as an old family friend, one unblemished by the “wardrobe malfunction” that kneecapped Janet Jackson 14 years ago. The incident is a microcosm of Timberlake’s career: At no point has his ascendance been interrupted by anything like negative consequences. He played a pivotal role in one of this century’s defining TV controversies and was happily invited back to the scene of the crime little more than a decade later. He rush-recorded and released a massive two-part album to fulfill contractual obligations and was welcomed back into the music industry with arms wide open. He wore a full denim suit and cowboy hat on the red carpet; he played a crucial role in The Love Guru. None of it mattered. When you skate through your life unscathed, you accumulate hubris. And it takes a lot of hubris to make an album like Man of the Woods.

The EP's out today. I absolutely love their new style. I adored their bubblegum pop style but you can only have so much of that before it goes stale. Their transition to some kinda shoegaze-y garage pop band is delightful and very welcome (and slightly disturbing, and that's not at all a bad thing).
