Man, I hope they're right this time. Fun at least has two charting singles, but Gotye's sitting at just the one. If I were his producer I'd be frantically trying to release another one soon before he starts running the risk of being a one-hit-wonder.

I don't really think Gotye will have another hit, mostly because I don't think he was ever aiming for one in the first place. If anything, he sounded really pissed dealing with Top 40 radio stations and the lovely "remixes" they made so his song would sound like everything else on the radio.

JT is blabbering about every song (11 songs) on the album being 7-8 minutes long.

poo poo Justin 3 and a half minutes is the true length to any pop song what the hell is this?

I actually kind of like that Justin goes balls-out with the self-indulgent track lengths; it makes him stand out from other pop artists. Besides, most of his long tracks either don't feel that long or are just two regular songs stuck together.

I think that some tracks go on a little longer than they have to, but as a whole I'm really loving this new JT album. It feels like "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" in terms of how ambitious, dense, and insane it is.

It's doing about as well as one could ever expect considering it's an impenetrable mess of headache-inducing EDM noise mashed together with high-camp cabaret celebrating a pop singer's love for drugs, fame, and the endless depths of her own pretentious narcissism. I mean, apparently the Little Monsters will still love it (because ARTPOP), but does anyone really expect the general public to when her popularity with them was founded entirely on hype? If it's "art," maybe she should wear her lack of commercial chart performance as a badge of honor.

Meanwhile, let us all play tiny violins for how badly "Unconditionally" is doing on the charts while Katy Perry cries into her mattress filled with money. At least the video was pretty.

Maybe it's because I listen to plenty of abrasive music, but I don't really get the criticism that Artpop is inaccessible ear-splitting noise with an unlikeably shallow, narcissistic bent to it. Artpop has the same EDM sound and subject matter as pretty much everything else on the radio, only done in a slightly more interesting manner. I feel like all of the backlash from Artpop is just coming from people who hate the idea of a pop musician taking their own work more seriously than their listeners are.

Eh, I'd agree with this. Didn't care for most of BTW, and I'm surprised that Artpop is getting this much hate when it's a much more interesting and consistent album.

JT album is a solid 7/10 to me. It's 3-4 tracks too long but for the most part it's a smooth fun r&b album. It's not his strongest work but I don't get the vitriolic hatred surrounding this album at all, it's too inoffensive and earnest and goofy for me to imagine having a strong negative reaction to this

HorseRenoir
Dec 25, 2011

20/20 is one of my favorite pop albums ever but I'm fine with JT making a light comfy dad-pop album for his family, he's already put in work and made some classic albums. He's old and has a wife and kid and has nothing to prove to anyone at this point in his career. I'm mostly just glad that he's embracing the fact that he's a dorky uncool dad now and he's not trying too hard to make an album that sounds hip and trendy like Taylor Swift did (aside from Supplies, which is the weakest song on the album)

Anyways, MGMT is dropping the best pop album of the year next Friday and I'm probably going to be listening to that for months on end.

Most of the top 40 these days is hip hop, top 40 radio just won't play it because most of it is too "street" for racist companies like iHeartRadio that think white peoples' heads will explode if they hear a rap verse on a Maroon 5 song.

I'm glad that iHeartRadio/ClearChannel is dying, even though I'm sure all the stations they own will probably get bought out by someone shittier or shut down permanently. Maybe they could have avoided this if they played the music that was actually popular and not their outdated ideas of what music they think "should" be popular.
