I really like the 'magical language' showing up on this page. (It was mentioned at the end of the book, but I forget what the name was.) Unsounded's "magic-as-reality-programming" is really growing on me.

Yeah, I highly doubt it'll be gone.

Instead of Formspring, someone's going to either use the currently existing Wiki, or create a new one and everything's probably going to be archived eventually. I wouldn't be surprised if someone's got a script to go through Formspring and put everything into a text file, to be sorted later.

"Twist?" If there's going to be a twist, it's that the family survives and only Duane bites it in the end. Honestly, politics in Alderode seems a dangerous business and here's this blonde schmuck with a loving family getting promoted into a life of ecclesiastical espionage.

I'm just dreading the inevitable dropping of the other shoe here.

Equally possible: he will set him on fire, blow up his house, cover him in dog poop, and depants him, but not hit him.

Duane and his entire family will be murdered and he will be brought back as a zombie when he spends the whole meeting holding his fist an inch from the president's face while repeating "I'm not hitting you!" over and over.

That or he'll use magics to make the president hit himself.

Huh. Now that you mention it Quigley's words might seem to be prophetic.

On the other hand, I think Quigley would probably have heard about it if some bumfuck trash murdered the President. I mean Alderode does not seem to be big on transparency but that's probably something that would have made the rounds.

No way. Duane's had too many visions of his little girl during stressful times for me to believe she's alive.

And another: http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch03/ch03_36.html

And he gets really upset when little girls are threatened or hurt (like Sette, or the girl left behind on the altar by the Red Berry Boys). Granted, that's a reasonable response, but it's also foreshadowing.

The other banner is one on racial purity. It means what you think it means (though they'd also accept you just bringing the people in I bet).

Though, yeah, last page I was thinking, wow, these guys are actually pretty bad. This one, it's looking like all the bad things they've said are true, rather than patriotically demonizing them. drat.

Bounties for Native American scalps were a disturbingly common thing in colonial/early United States history. Almost certainly other places/times too.

Still :gonk: as gently caress.

<edit> Hell, in a world where children have their guts scooped out and their body cavities used to smuggle enchanted silver, scalping is downright pedestrian.

Yeah, I did see the other poster, I just figured... you know, it HAS to mean something else. There's no way Duane would defend this place otherwise! Quigley said he was brainwashed and it's been hinted since at least chapter 2 that Alderode were the bad guys, but jesus christ.

Thing is, in the past it seemed like the people talking bad about Alderode were doing something similar; while we knew the caste system was real other than that and one or two other things we didn't have reason to believe that it was as bad as, well, as what we just saw. It would also explain the way Cresce is getting involved in everything in the countries around it and whatnot.

No, they like, actually eat a literal person. Since their gods are twins, when twins are born one is typically offered up, raised as a priest, then ritually slaughtered and eaten by high ranking church members at such and such an age.

These are some of the reasons I've started to suspect that Mikaila is dead, but the rest of Duane's family survives. All his guilt seems to be centered on her. So he can't really return to his family not only because he's gross as heck but also because Makaila is dead, probably because of something he did. If this is true, it might also partly explain his ongoing patriotism. It's his family he's missing, not just Alderode.

Duane himself says he's been dead for about 6 years or so, so they're still alive. His caste are basically normal humans with normal lifespans as well.

I believe he says he's been 'like this' for 6 years. He could have been referring to being dead or being in control of his undead form rather than being a ravenous undead beast. When Sette directly asked him a dozen or so pages later if he's been dead for 6 years, he ignored her.

That's my recollection. I just read through Unsounded today that's what I remember, but I can't be bothered to go back and check.

Edit: I just remembered it was after they found the murdered girl and tracked it down.

http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch03/ch03_46.html

That's where 6 years is first mentioned. He thought he'd learnt to control his hunger after 6 years, so it could be referring to when he became undead or when he learnt to control his hunger after being undead for a greater amount of time.

http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch03/ch03_51.html

That's where he's directly asked the question of how long he's been dead and dodges it.
