Hope this Murk fellow doesn't stick around. I know Unsounded can get pretty dark at times and deals with unsavory topics but come on*. What is it about freeform RPers (and White Wolfers, for that matter) that compels them to Get Edgy With It? *

Pyradox posted:He strikes me as more of a Johnny Depp as Sweeny Todd than anything else. When a creator puts his or her heart and soul out there for everyone to see, this might include some tastes that don't quite mesh with everyone else's sensibilities. That's more than fine, it's fair. Ms. Cope is writing for herself first and foremost, and if we enjoy the ride all the better. If we get kind of weirded out by some of the attractions along the way, though, that's also fine and fair and entirely within our prerogatives as readers. It's not like we're demanding she change her work to cater to us, we're just not-so-quietly hoping her favorite fetish rapist OP goes away soon so we can go back to morally grey adventure storytime. She's probably have fun with this at any rate. He's her favorite casual villain, and she also gets to watch her not-fangirl readers squirm. "Is Murkoph going to exit stage left? NOPE. How about now? HAHAH. " If he does stick around, though, that might make for slightly little uncomfortable reading here on out.

I'm just dreading the inevitable dropping of the other shoe here.

The real reason Duane doesn't want to go to Cresce: He's a bad kisser and this embarrasses him terribly.

In Cresce, greed is a crime, the idea of which I find rather unsettling. I do wonder if they're anywhere near as bad as Alderode, though, because Alderode is bad. Quigley probably thought they were the lesser of two evils (or at least convenient allies) at one point, before deciding he was better off doing business elsewhere. Nevermind that this landed him in some sickeningly deplorable company that he's only recently cut himself from.

This slow-motion shoe-dropping sequence is like the bullet time of preparing to be very, very sad. If Duane's entire family gets killed then Alderode can gently caress right off.

That, and she's been having a great day aside from the woops forgot to remind dad not to punch some man now he's cross thing. I mean Yeah, maybe I'm a natural pessimist, but she's getting so much characterization in such a short time that I can't help but assume it's to make her death as tragic as possible. Which is not a bad thing, and if you have to introduce a character whose tragic death is a major motivator for one of your main characters, you sure as heck better make sure the reader feels it. Also it's not confirmed whether that vision of Mikaila was just a hallucination or not. Expecting the worst, though hoping for the best.

Black comedy is never not appropriate for Unsounded, even when it's inappropriate. And Ashley Cope is nothing if not a lovely art engine fueled by dark humours. While I mentioned before that some of her sensibilities tended to skew similarly to the "dark and edgy" RPer crowd, we've seen that unlike most of that sort--who would vainly pursue an ideal of "maturity" in the most juvenile and overblown ways possible--Ms. Cope's work combines humor, levity, and a sense of dramatic contrast that shows that she knows how to put her sensibilities to best use. I could call Unsounded a "mature" comic, but that would be doing it a disservice. This is the work of someone who's actually matured to the point where maturity isn't an affectation that must be forced but rather an aspect of the self that is simply understood so as not to interfere with a vivid imagination capable of wit, subtlety, charisma, and startling violence. Ashley Cope is probably an interesting person to hang out with, yes.

Or mercantilism. Or physiocracy. Or bothers to explore economics at all. But to be honest most of our modern economic understanding is a relatively recent development so fantasy using systems outwardly similar to capitalism is understandable, even if their business world lacks the philosophical understandings that underpin generally capitalist economies. Cresce's switch to a moneyless, non-credit socialism seems to address perceived symptoms more than any real problems. Meet the new wealth, same as the old wealth. Except with an extra veneer of shaming and a distinct value-vagueness. And you can shame greed all you like, doesn't mean the Queen isn't going to shut your town down for a lack of productivity value. And since there's no money, there's no measure of indication that the town can produce value independent of any mines or such. And even if there's no money, there's still a distinct aristocracy that's divorced from the concerns and values of the common people. Greed manifests itself in more than just a lust for coin, and Cresce demonstrates this in a lot of ways. Neither Cresce nor Alderode are very nice places to be.

Seems like Elan took what Stockyard told him and leapt to the wrong conclusions. Fair enough, with the hiatus it can be a little hard to keep track. Also how some characters deliberately choose to be obtuse at times.

Most of us who aren't Down With the Murk are still reading and have managed to restrain our distaste to a couple of off-hand jokes as seen above. As you can see, everyone really is giving Cope the benefit of the doubt.
