Ah, I can't wait to get back home and try out my new Metro pen. My sister got me a bottle of Fuyugaki and I picked up a couple of preppy platinums from Kinokuniya when I was in LA yesterday. I want to try them out sooooo bad.

like this one:

You can remove the plastic bits at the end of the bulb. It is nice for cleaning cartridge style pens. The solution is pretty mild and loosens ink pretty well. You can still get this kit for ~$30 at DickBlick or Amazon.
You could also get a bulb-style nasal aspirator from Amazon or CVS and literally spend far less than half of that.

I've actually had this problem too and have been wondering whether my Metropolitan was a lemon. It's fussier about inks than I would have liked -- I tested it out twice with Terre de Feu, but it skips here and there. Even Noodler's Black takes a few scratches to start up (which was not the case with the Safari), but once it does it writes like a charm. It's still a great deal of a pen, of course...but this thread has me looking at the 580 now. This poo poo is a goddamn rabbit hole.

That said, I'm currently on the hunt for purple/violet/indigo inks that aren't fussy. So far I've liked testing out La Reine Mauve, but it's too high maintenance for regular use, unfortunately. Anyone have suggestions of inks to try? Legibility is a must, and it'd be nice if it worked on cheap paper as well as higher quality paper, but other than that anything goes.
Noodler's North African Violet is loving violet and I mean loving violet.

Beautiful, strong color, but it stains like a motherfucker.

Obligatory Toast, how is that Ahab you're using? I decided Noodler's Turquoise Eel is my favourite ink ever now and I've been curious about the Ahab for a while. I thought as long as I was gonna put an order in to the Goulets I'd take an opportunity to maybe get a new pen too :getin:

Edit: Also, recommending Aurora Black as the perfect black. It's a completely neutral black which is nice and is extremely black which makes a change compared to most black inks.

It's nice, but the nib and feed can both be finicky as poo poo. There are threads online that show how you can basically mod it with a dremel tool. Getting the steel nib from GP basically turned something that was a novelty into something I will probably use a lot more.

I just got back from Goulet warehouse. Got my Goulet #6 Fine nib and a bunch of samples that I'm excited to try. The Goulet nibs are really great. The Fine actually has a slightly wider line than I was expecting (about the same as an unflexed Noodler's Flex line is), but I'll admit that I don't have a whole lot of experience with different nib sizes.

If you're in or around the Richmond/Ashland area at all, I'd really recommend doing a pick-up at the Goulet warehouse next time you order from them. Everyone is super nice and more than ready to answer any questions you might have. And I got a tootsie pop from them :3:
One day I'll do this.

But right now, I do not feel like traveling an hour on i-95 south for any reason.

I just swapped out the flex nib in my Ahab for a Goulet non-flex, and even with a minimum of fiddling it's already a vast improvement over the flex nib, which I found to be balky and recalcitrant. Of course it probably also didn't help that I bent the tines on the flex nib after an unsuccessful attempt at tinkering,

Yeah, the noodlers flex Ahab leaves a lot to be desired, but it has a maaaaaasive ink capacity compared to a lot of other pens. It does take a little fiddling with the Goulet nibs, but once you've got it set in the feed right, it writes nice and wet. I've had good luck with cutting into the feed a little deeper, too, since the ones that one straight out of the box with the ahabs seem a little shallow, even for the flex nib. Fwiw, cutting the feed a little wider also seems to help the flex nibs work a little better, but they're still pretty unwieldy most of the time.

I like the suggestion about getting sample sizes. Also just read that you can convert the Preppys into eyedrop pens and do without the cartridges?! :v: That sounds scary but adventurous.

Does everyone typically buy inks from online? (I noticed that Goulet Pen is referenced a lot.) Or are there brick-and-mortar shops with comparable prices in places like NYC that sell 'em?

Preppies are great for eye-dropper conversions because they're cheap as gently caress and hold a loooooot of ink. You can practice on blending ink colors easily using them, and if it fucks up the nib - who gives a gently caress? You spent like 3 bucks on it. The only thing that can super suck is that the barrel is cheap plastic and can crack easily. But, you can buy a pack of them, some gasket o-rings for like, a buck at your local hardware store, some silicone grease, and you will be sitting pretty.

Goulet is p. amazing, but I'm biased because they're technically local to me so my shipping time is super quick, and they always send you a tootsie pop. They'll also write a little thank you note on the invoice with a sample ink and they'll tell you what it is, so it gives you a good idea what some colors look like without having to buy. They also sell fountain-pen friendly notebooks and have a blog that reviews a lot of stuff.

How much do you all actually write?

I try and write a few pages of thoughts out every week. Sometimes I get really into it and wind up spending an evening filling half a notebook with blather. Apica's 6A10 notebooks are my favorite for daily writing. The paper is silky smooth and ink dries almost immediately. They aren't cheap but I haven't found many other notebooks where writing in it feels so much like gliding over ice.

I'm working on a novel and I write all of my summaries and notes by hand.

So question does anybody here own a karas pen? I got one from Goulet yesterday and it's a great pen... except the converter is an absolute piece of poo poo. If it doesn't fit JUST loving SO into the nib housing it will hemorrhage ink. My lamy has a similar style converter but doesn't act like a piece of trash, so I'm wondering if this is a common problem? I'm gonna contact Goulet about it anyways, but I'm wondering if a new converter will solve the problem outright.
