I migrated to Plex as well about a year ago but my shield 2015 rocked Kodi no problem til then. It can't be the only OS/app like a PC can, hitting HOME will bring you to a stock Android TV interface, but that's kind of ok if you plan to also use Netflix and other apps anyway.

This is me but Plex. I bought an OG Shield to run Kodi but also to be able to access Netflix and other apps and doing this on older HTPCs was a pain in the rear end. Once streaming sticks became more the norm, Kodi just wasn't cutting it. I think the last time I may have installed it to see what the Plex plug in was like but got tired of the same old interface.

I use a Shield on my TV with Kodi installed and have no issues; 4K, HDR, 5.1/7.1 through the stereo, etc. I tried Emby and Jellyfin but it's not not having to transcode, and I had a lot of issues with HDR and audio codecs before switching back to Kodi honestly.

I have the newest Shield and use Kodi for 4K/HDR stuff and it has no problems what so ever. Plex's interface is extremely annoying to me, and I haven't cared enough to try any of the other apps out there. The one negative about the Shield is that one updated or the other introduced ads to the interface, but you can setup an alternate launcher and get rid of the interface all together, which is well worth the time and effort. I hated the stupid scrolling bars from the default Android TV interface. If I could get this AirPlay app working I'd be set.

I'm still rocking a first-generation Intel NUC and it does the job, with Kodi (LibreElec) as a front-end and Jellyfin as a media server on my desktop PC. Having introduced Jellyfin about two months back, I find it works marginally better than using SMB file sharing. The main difference is all library wrangling is done in Jellyfin which is slightly better about scraping stuff without introducing incorrect matches. Plus, it's easier to correct any errors in the web UI on my desktop, than it is in the remote-control UI of Kodi. So getting rid of Kodi's library handling was a plus in my book. I'm ready to throw out the NUC as soon as I have to replace my old TV, because the NUC can't handle decoding 4K content (and for some reason the transcoding to 1080p doesn't seem to work as it should from Jellyfin). I might go for a Shield-based solution with just Jellyfin and no Kodi, when that happens. Or, if an Android based TV, I suppose it might be possible to run Jellyfin directly on it? My problem with everything non-kodi has been that I love the kodi client interface and haven't liked any of the others. They're all like Netflix, which I find pretty terrible. I know it's not as strong on the library management, and It's a shame kodi doesn't make centralised databases easier for most users but as a computer toucher I find it easy enough to set up. And perhaps I don't care about management as much as most since I delete most things once I've seen them. I notice jellyfin put out a new version of their android tv app a few months back and the last time I used it there were only a few annoyances, so I'll give that a go today.

My internet went out and won't be back till Saturday, Plex requires internet even if you have a local server. Thank God for Kodi.

I already have Jellyfin and use it occasionally for streaming stuff when away from home. IMO it doesn't come close to matching Kodi for the living room, at least not yet. Previously the Android TV app would randomly restart playback from the beginning at some internal while watching videos, and after the big update a few months back it started crashing in the background producing full-screen "oh no jellyfin has crashed" messages while watching other channels/apps, so I just uninstalled it. Kodi's video player core is very mature and high quality, and I'm going to keep using that either way. Not very impressed with Emby/Jellyfin library management either so for now I just keep in sync with Trakt. My Sony TV can run apps so I don't care about being able to run those, I just want some hardware to run Kodi 24/7. Tried running Kodi as an app on the TV but as refresh rate switching doesn't work it's not an option. I would like another NUC with LibreELEC since I know it just works without any bullshit, but from what I know there's still no support for HDR on x86 there. Does the SHIELD TV put you back at the dashboard after some time like the Fire TV does or can it just sit there running Kodi without interruption?

You can just set your local IP range on the server and then you can use Plex without internet at home, I use it regularly this way. I do miss how Kodi was rock solid at playing anything I wanted, but it stopped fulfilling all my requirements a while ago.

I have a friend who lives in the mountains with no mobile service and really lovely satellite internet. They have no pay tv options available. They boggled at my crazy Plex/NAS setup and asked if I had any ideas for something like that but way simpler. Well, my thought was a loaded hard drive plugged into some sort of Kodi box. But I haven't touched Kodi for years since switching to Plex. Is Kodi actually still the best no-internet play-poo poo-via-USB option? Without need for 4k or even internet, any really good value boxes that will be happy to play 1080p x264? A Shield would just be massive overkill I think, but I don't know what really would be best. Some specific generation jailbroken Amazon or Apple device? Maybe I will just tell them to get a really long HDMI cable and hook their PC up to their TV and get a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I dunno. Advice appreciated.

I was able to get a Acer ChromeBox CXI2-4GKM for forty bucks shipped. I think it will be perfect for their needs after I flash it and set it up. They don't need Android, I think LibreELEC should be great. Now to find a remote.

I recently discovered the combination of Kodi + IPTV + Debrid and it scratches the exact itch I have these days where I want to watch everything in one place but I don't necessarily want to maintain a giant library of content. I think I paid $15 for half a year of Real-Debrid.com service? Seems like a steal.

So I googled Real Debrid and from what I can tell, it’s just a wrapper around all those illegal streaming Kodi addons, where it helps you get the best possible quality for your  . Is that right?Presumably they’d also curate the sources so when a source inevitably gets taken down, you get a replacement automatically?

Yeah I'm not saying this is my permanent solution for media consumption but it works right now and is super convenient for the costs involved. If I still had a working sickbeard setup with a NAS I'd probably still do that but I don't have a place to store everything so I have to be selective and this seems to allow for that.

I'd probably swap to Kodi so I wouldn't have to worry about PGS subs on 4K HDR stuff but Kodi just has weird framepacing/framerate judder for me on some files and that doesn't happen with Plex and I'm still not sure why this is the case. Gonna blame some mix of not knowing how to setup kodi right, the shield tv, the x900f, or the random anime (and a few non anime) mkvs just being weirdly encoded.

I remember getting annoyed with Kodi updates breaking my library a couple of times and I just switched to Plex. It's a little annoying to deal with stuff that's not in a database (I have a couple of libraries of stuff that aren't official and not in the public databases; it pulls the closest match and I have to edit everything to fix it), but I don't use it much and I've never had a issue with the library breaking during an update. I do have a Windows PC hooked up to my TV and use a wireless keyboard/track pad, cause I'm a nerd who lives alone. I never bothered trying to get my remote to work with Plex. I used it with Kodi, but I don't miss it.

Just today I received a RiiMini i25 remote mouse for my NUC and it works fairly well. I haven't used an air mouse since 2004 or so but the technology seems to have come along. And you can just lock the cursor off screen if you don't need mouse support beyond clicking. It's got a full keyboard on the back which is nice for the odd times you need to search or enter data. It's even able to suspend the box from the remote so that's a bonus. Plugged it in and LibreELEC knew what to do with it without any problems.

Same. Jellyfin server and libreelec front end. Survived the latest upgrade just fine. I wiped the Kodi box but all I had to do was set the new install up with the Jellyfin add-on and put in the server address. Library all back including watched status.

I thought this thread was for flexing about how hard you're not using Kodi. Now nearly a year after asking for opinions ITT I finally ended up ordering a SHIELD TV Pro yesterday. At this point I really wanted to wait for the inevitable next model but a decent sale popped up. Fingers crossed it'll be the magic "just works" box that everyone claims, looking forward to getting that sweet HDR going since my NUC couldn't deliver there.
