Eventually you'll learn to pick them out of the background. That's mostly cash fodder anyway, I don't think there are any important items just lying around without a text prompt or a prominent chest.

The main exception is that sometimes bosses drop good gear when you kill them, although in those cases you already know exactly where to look.

Something worth noting: you basically should never buy gear in this game. Money is somewhat scarce, save it for skills/spells and certain consumables. Armor and weapons and most basic potions are found in abundance. The exception might be right at the start of the game. Buy better poo poo then if you want to give yourself an edge but very quickly you'll be getting magic equipment from bosses or quests and the basic stuff drops aplenty from random dudes.

Thanks, I've noticed that a lot of stuff is pretty pricey but I don't remember buying any weapons or armor so far.

Speaking of costs, is there any sort of bartering or reputation system in this game, or some way to bring all of these merchants down from the "Expensive" price bracket?

Nope, but do get Negotiator trait for all 4 of your characters as soon as you can get it. It's only an 8% boost in total gold gain, but that extra bit really helps.

Does anybody else find ward of thoughts utterly worthless? It's supremely irritating to cast it specifically when i know i'm going to be fighting something with charm attacks only to have my two fighters charmed in the first round anyway. In fact it's making me not want to finish the game, considering the sudden proliferation of enemies with mind effects like gazers and cryo drakes. It sucks because i'm steamrolling everything else, but the only ability in the entire game that is supposed to be a defense against thought attacks doesn't seem to work at all.

Edit: haha, also, enemies with mass heal can suck my balls. It doesn't make them any more likely to win a fight but holy gently caress does it make fights take longer.

I feel the same way. Since it was my only ward I used it anyway but once I got ward of Steel I used that and then finally settled on ward of elements later on. The charm spell is like this too, in my opinion. Even at level 3 the spell always failed to work.

As for countering charm get unshackle mind and mass heal for your priest or equivalent. You will literally go from barely surviving encounters to steamrolling over them. Mass curing is good too, but you can power through most debuffs by using mass heal.

I have all that poo poo, i'm in the final quests of the game. The problem with unshackle mind is that it is single target so if both fighters get charmed one of them will one shot my priest regardless of which one i cure.

My priest has some of the best armor of the game, so even when my fighters are charmed, its like 5 or 6 hits before the priest is dead. Luckily it's only the mage that can't use good armor, but there are ways around that.

There's a few quests that you will need some picks/tongs/etc so save some of them in your junk bag. Hoard anything of value that you wont use and sell it to vendors when you can.

Awesome that you're doing that! I'll refrain from chiming in on the votes since I know how it goes but I'll say this -- one of my favorite things about the faction system in the Geneforge games, the thing I haven't seen any other RPG get so right, is the way your choices always seem to have consequence, but you're rarely locked into a certain path until very late. There's always room for you to change your mind as you see what you've wrought with your decisions. I hope you can find a way to reflect that in your audience participation without making it feel like their earlier choices were meaningless; I can imagine it coming off differently if you're not the one playing the game.

Is there a way to make map annotations in these games, or any other sort of custom annotation? I've gotten the Crown Token in Escape from the Pit and I've run into a few rooms in dungeons that I haven't been strong enough to clear yet, but want to come back to later. I'm just afraid that I'll forget where they are or what's in them so I'm hoping I can mark them somehow in game, but all I've seen so far is the journal's ability to record dialogue blurbs. Is there some less-obvious button or keystroke to push, or do I have to go old school and take notes on pen and paper?

E: What determines how much armor is "too much" for spellcasters? I want my cleric to be more of a frontline fighter/buff specialist (think D&D cleric) but I can't tell how much armor is going to prevent him from casting. I'm also thinking about giving him the Spellsword perk (or whatever it's called) next, does that also work for priest spells even though the description says mage spells?

It's based on your total to-hit penalty from all equipment: by default a -5% penalty is the most you can cast mage spells in, and each rank of Swordmage raises the limit by 5%. There's no limit for priest spells, so put as much armour on your priests as you like.

And that, as much as anything else, led to my drinking problem.
In Geneforge how much leadership/mechanics should I aim for to have access to everything?

Also, I still have the fyora I made in the tutorial and it's level 7 now. Since then I got my fyora shaping skill upgraded. Is it worth making a new one or does the higher skill factor into its leveling somehow?

Imo they shouldn't level independently at all. They get skillpoints but you have to spend essence or whatever it's called to use them anyway. You're better off pumping the skill and considering them disposable, that way new monsters have better skills without increasing in cost.

I'm a guardian and I didn't plan on having more than 1 or 2 creatures so it's not like I have anything else to spend essence on.

What exactly does that skill do anyway? The fyora skill you can only get from canisters (afaik). I know you need one point to make fyoras, but what about any further points?

If you have three points in any given creature, you get the option to make a variant which is often stronger (but not always). For example the Fyora variant is Cryoas which spit ice instead of fire, are better all around, and have a higher base level. Also every extra point towards that creation raises the starting creature level when you make a fresh one.

As far as I know, the highest leadership requirement in Geneforge 1 is 12; you can easily get by with a bit less if you don't mind getting in one or two fights or doing one or two quests that you could otherwise avoid. Mechanics is a bit more flexible since you can get away with low Mechanics if you're judicious about how you use living tools; but since you're a Guardian, you won't get much benefit out of the Unlock spell, so you'll want to raise Mechanics higher than other classes. Get a few points in it ASAP and again aim for maybe 12 points as your final target.

Healing, long-term buffs. IIRC, the mechanics in 1 favor making new creations over leveling up old ones. Treat them as disposable tools, like any good Shaper. :colbert:

EDIT: Wait were there any of the map-long buffs which chew up tons of Essence in Geneforge 1 or were they introduced in 2?

Oh, good. I'm already at 11 mechanics and still see levers that need 3 tools to open, which had me worried my skill might be too low. I have 20+ tools though so I should be fine.

Do you mean the blessing spells? I'm not using any of those.
And for healing I've been relying on items. It worked out so far but I don't know if there's going to be any upgraded healing items later in the game.

No, there are some spells which I think don't actually exist in 1 that just buff the target for until you leave the map you're on and cost a large chunk of Essence but no Energy.

Anyway, IIRC Guardians are weak at Magic, but notice that Healing is actually a Shaping category skill.

Dragonwagon posted:

In Geneforge 2 if you're a magic focused character they're just straight up stronger at midway through the game and beyond. It does take more action points to cast a spell than use an item, though.

I did it on hard recently, took me about 30 reloads to do without losing anyone. loving golems either: stun my tanks, or start knocking everyone around the room away from each other.

Specifically, I had to change my party order to make sure my priest went first so he could cure stun on someone when he wasn't healing or nuking with Firestorm.

Invuln potions are a must, along with speed scrolls that give battle frenzy.

Edit 2: Forgot to mention, I didn't even bother with Garhzad, I saved right before I triggered his script, battle frenzied, went into fight mode and then took two turns to rush past him.

Edit: I eventually plan to beat this game on Torment. Weep for me. :negative:
