I asked EPW about this somewhere or other, I think in the macro thread, and she and others said it wasn't a big deal because derails are cut short as soon as she gets to them and the offenders get probated, so it really wouldn't change much. So not a bad idea, just unnecessary.

Bad idea. Gifs are not like regular, non-moving, low-filesize images. Enforcing a rule that encourages posting more of them in the thread would be very bad. Posts without images in them are a good buffer to keep the thread from overloading and crashing browsers.

It's the same reason we are limited to no more than 5 gifs per post.

Not only that, but in the past (in the macro thread if I remember correctly), people would through in the same tired pictures again and again in order to participate in derails. So, not only were there derails, but the derails had really bad content within them.
