Is that picture a Lost reference? I never watched that show but I knew people who did and they had art with a symbol like that.

A new "official" Touhou RPG by Good Smile and NextNinja has been announced for smartphones, Touhou Lost Word: https://touhoulostword.com/ Not much known so far. - Probably will be gacha-based judging by the in-game currency bonuses given away for pre-reg milestones (5 rarity levels, one spin is 5 of the cube things and 1500 coins) - Profiles for the non-human characters include danger level and friendliness to human levels - It will use arrangements from popular Touhou music circles like Cool & Create and Tokyo Active NEETs - They used the wrong kanji for "Hakurei"

Cannonball isn't out yet, no, but it's further along in development. Not announcing any game play details is par for the norm in FTP smartphone games, but yeah I would expect them to have at least something of substance revealed before trying to get people to pre-register.

I wouldn't expect any new actual lore from the game, just like the other smartphone game. They're both basically derivative works but they have ZUN's blessing to be sold like this. That's what I meant by the quotes around official.

For what it's worth, the only game in question I could find that came out states side from the developer NextNinja appears to be Grand Summoners, which was reasonably okay. That said, while it's not exactly unusual to launch with minimal details, a 15 second PV of two character art cut-ins feels anemic even for that. Canonball is also probably a gacha. Given the pre-register rewards, it'd be really weird if it wasn't. Which is a shame because gacha is evil.

On one hand, I'd say Japan seems to have a handle on making it as non-exploitative as possible (partly because there is actually legislation here that restricts it to a degree and no one wants to push the limits further) but on the other hand it does seem to go against what ZUN has established in the past 20 years. I get the sense that since he has a family to support, he's trying to spread the market for his own property without relinquishing control of the core (story/characters/setting). It's selling out to an extent but he feels like he has to in order to stay relevant, making as many compromises as possible but keeping it his own.

Given they arent official you can just not play them if you sont like gacha, you arent missing out on anything the same way you arent missing out on anything if you dont play touhou soccer 2 My only issue is that kids might find them and not realize theyre not official
