Good chapter of Home at the Horizon today I really do love Ryoma’s balance of observant and caring and proudly introverted and insensitive He didn’t even really show up the chapter except for one scene, but it was a good scene

The Forbidden Feast: This was a bit weird, but I liked it a lot because it had lovely people getting what's coming to them and also the concept of what appears to be a pretty normal rear end looking human girl being a horror movie monster is pretty fun, and something I think might only work in a comic

Time to talk about another series, and this one ended almost a year ago: Tokyo Underworld At 97 chapter, it's uhh.... not good, not bad, but also not bland. At the same time, I cannot recommend or recommend against reading it. It is the most nothing of nothingburgers I have read in the last two years which may be a point against it given its hook. The story starts off with a class of students getting sent to the titular place, which is essentially just hell, and the entire story is about the class trying to escape it. There are themes around family, guilt, and forgiveness but the meaning behind its themes and narrative are ultimately shallow. The characters are also a mix between archetypal and realistic. The worldbuilding was present but never inspired much curiosity. In my opinion, the manga got to 97 chapters through its hook, cliffhangers, and twists -- made it so that the readers just read the next chapter just to see what was left off from the previous chapter. Sometimes the twists were heavily telegraphed, but then there would be a twist within the twist. At the end day, however, making an "engaging" storyline does not help if the story itself is not great. At least the manga itself is role model in how a mediocre manga can sustain itself through cliffhangers -- it need not necessarily be great art, lewd fanservice, spectacular fights, etc.

It does make me wonder how the Sphere gets new raw materials if they clearly don't recycle, and throw stuff away at the slightest damage. I think givers could exist on the sphere, entirely because why the gently caress would they seemingly design an entire society to perfectly NOT become givers if it wasn't something that could happen?

In a way it's kind of a classic "you wanna make art, huh? well gently caress you I am going to get all Dark Side-y on you and that's the only way your art will be any good" kinda deal Which also creates a path for Akane to crush that crusty old bastard; becoming queen of Rakugo but also not being a lovely bitter old fucker

It also comes back to that uber formal dinner after Akane's win vs Shiguma's MUCH more informal walk-about town after Maikeru's promotion where he just walks around Shibuya and EVERYONE knows him and is super cool and warm.

Sakamoto: fat Sakamoto blowing the guys contraption apart by blowing into the barrel of his weapon is peak lol Akanebanashi: Some amazing panel work in this chapter. Consistently the best poo poo in JUMP!!! I can't wait to see Issho get double punched by these two Shinobi Undercover: I think I am finally starting to see this as a legit good manga that is not going to get axed. I realize its been around for more than a year but its great. I love the teacher whining to the handler about Aoi. It really balances the character comedy with the action stuff nicely and I love how stupid everyone is. Harukaze Mound: Still don't know if im getting about to be cancelled vibes from this or if its following normal sports trajectory, but as a baseball manga I like it. Hero Girl & Demon Lord Call it Quits: Its good. I want this to stick around. Someone Hertz: Still my new favorite out of all of them. Akanebanashi: While Issho is a monstrous rear end in a top hat now, he didn't seem to be in the Shiguma flashback. Makes me wonder if he had a "my pain is my art" moment when Akane's master was given the Shiguma name instead of him, twisting his perception to "I make great art and have known great pain, thus to teach the making of great art I must give my students great pain."

Kagurabachi being below something as profoundly mediocre as Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi is a surprise
I dropped kagurabachi a dozen chapters ago because while the series was capable of going extremely hard (grenade teleport...) very little of it was not a retread and I was never excited to read it. once the invasion arc started getting bogged down in the affairs of kamunabi c-listers I felt the trash starting to congeal and bailed

Tosk posted:Kagurabachi being below something as profoundly mediocre as Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi is a surprise What? That’s indeed insane. While I get what panko is saying, Kagurabachi looks significantly better and reaches significantly better hype moments. Though Kiyoshi at least can be pretty funny.
Quick reminder that there is a correlation between ToC and rankings but that we never actually get to see the rankings. At least on MangaPlus, Kagurabachi is way above Kiyoshi (which is still a fine, funny manga that honestly I wanna see continue, even if it's not doing anything spectacularly). That said, Oda mentioning he liked Kiyoshi probably boosted it a lot.

kagurabachi is probably safe because sj is so desperate for long running manga right now. there are even a bunch that look like they are starting to wrap up.

Kagurabachi is also getting an anime so it is really safe. Anyone else read Life Man on MangaPlus? It is kind of a weird lowkey story about a "superhero" where it is unclear (as of now) whether he actually has any powers or if he's just a guy with social anxiety and a costume.
Kiyoshi is drawn by a former Oda assistant and I think is the new Black Clover as far as being a "Largely competent, insanely boilerplate battle shonen" in weekly jump.

I'm interested in seeing where it goes. I think the latest chapter where he's thinking back to how easily he snapped that kid's finger makes me lean towards him having some kind of power (at the very least he's just very strong) while also making me think that this isn't going to be just some gag manga that's just about him being a superhero with a very mundane life

I wonder if Kagurabachi being memed right around the time it got published fooled editorial into thinking that the people wanted to read more of it? Because I tried it for several chapters, and the main character was as dull as dishwater. The MC lacked the drive and crazy intensity you'd expect from someone trying to avenge their dead dad.

idk kagurabachi kicks rear end and has some of the best fight coreography and paneling in the biz right now. Chihiro is a lot of fun bc hes trying to be a different type of protaganist than he is

The western world memed Kagurabachi to hell and back and it's also one of the highest rated manga on MangaPlus in terms of hits. I dunno if there were memes in Japan.

Make the Exorcist Fall in Love![]() Pope Johannes tentatively handing his seat over to someone who belonged to an opposing Faction as he will likely die really speaks volumes about how this story has presented the Church. I hope he doesn't get killed but if he does I think Cardinal Heisenburg will be a great leader in a post-demon lord war world.
