lit. every professional translator ive seen is saying it was a dumb translation choice but that going after the translator as a 'nazi pedophile chud' is wildly misguided. literally evangelion itself has fanservice of 14 year old girls and an entire cast named after imperial japanese warships. his misgivings over hard bans on stuff seem fairly well placed, considering the law he was talking about was so broadly written that if enforced by the letter something like eva would have definitely fallen under it.

The context of the law is probably more complex than people are implying but at the same guy the translator did say the words "There is no such thing as manga and anime child pornography" which doesn't make him come across very well. One thing I'm really digging so far (halfway through) is how intentionally incoherent the worldbuilding is. Sometimes its this post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting where half the world was wiped out less then a generation ago then the next scene it's just regular late 90's Japan. There's no logical reason for the pilots of mankind's only hope to go to regular school on weekdays or for a major in an organization that outranks the UN to live in an unfurnished apartment with no on premise washer/dryer. But the contrast of the fantastical and mundane helps make all the themes and poo poo about relationships work.

But in the context of EoE, I have always taken the strangling scene as to what was going through Shinji's mind during the kiss; he was the one crying out for her to show him some genuine affection, only for her to reject him by running to the bathroom to wash out her mouth ("pathetic"). Who was in the wrong? How is a wet blanket like Shinji meant to pick up on any of Asuka's tsundere signals? Strangers passing in the night.

So, having been entirely exposed and known, Shinji hits his absolute nadir and commits what's probably the most shocking, violent act in End of Evangelion: strangling Asuka. One can argue that Asuka does the seek love from anyone and everyone bit herself, but I don't think that's accurate. There's two people she demonstrates an interest in: Kaji and Shinji. Remember how Asuka gets set up on a date, I think in that very same episode, and stands the guy up? I think a few episodes before she stomps on all the love letters she gets. Milkfred E. Another thing that sprung up in my mind is why the hell did Gendo meet Fuyutsuki the first time? Just to get out of jail? Why Fuyutsuki especifically? Did Gendo already know about Yui and her connection with Seele? Can't find a clear answer in the wiki.

I think that's because Yui knew Fuyutski and held him in high regard. So, she either advised Gendo to call him, or Gendo took it upon himself to do so. I think Gendo meeting Fuyutski and the hike where Yui says she's been dating him happen pretty close to each other in the year 1999. Up to the audience, I suppose.

No washer/dryer because that's how it is in most of the world. It's unfurnished because Misato is an alcoholic slob that spends 90% of her time at work because she's fueled entirely by vengeance and beer. The reason it doesn't have anything fancy is because Nerv spends all the money on the critical stuff. I think Ritsuko even calls out that Misato is living in a lovely apartment by choice instead of one of the fancier ones on site. The school thing I think is a double whammy of keeping up morale by pretending stuff can be normal and that for everyone but the top of Nerv and SEELE in theory the kids are gonna win and one day it will be over and they can live normal lives so education is important.
