Since we're talking about End of Evangelion I have always been fond of the theory that the movie was essentially Anno trolling the otaku fan base for being creepy entitled nerds who harassed him and the rest of the Gainax staff due to how the television show ended.

Here is the video explaining the theory in detail. Yeah the guy uses a puppet which is really loving stupid but his actual analysis on Eva for the most part is actually really good.
