Man, Ultimate General goes bad so fast. :(

I'm normally used to beating up the AI in Empire: Total War so when they fainted and then counter attacked I got a real shock.

I don't know if this is like a really dumb question or something, but I won as the Confederates at the start of Day 2 with a minor victory.

Losses were even, but at the end the Union had like 2x the amount of troops. So what did I actually achieve here?

You aren't giving a lot of details about what the position of troops were. Did you manage to force the union army off Cemetery Ridge? Strategical position and morale were more important in the ACW that sheer number of troops/casualties.

I just don't know the names of all the places, I'm sorry. But yes I had control of all the hills south of the town, but it makes sense why I "won" even though they had twice the men.

Alchenar posted:

You forced the Union to withdraw from the battlefield by occupying all the locations providing dominance over it. Beyond that you achieved nothing because the Union army withdrew in good order and you don't have the supplies to fight another battle so like the best-possible Confederate outcome nothing actually changes.

Okay cool! So it's like those old WW2 games where if you won as the German's they'd say "hurrah you won, but the allies are still going to win well done anyway!"

I think i'll do what people in the thread suggested and watch Gettysberg.

I want to say that it depends heavily on your opening moves and how effective they are.

If I remember correctly, there was an LP of WITE from the Russian side where all the guy did was pull his forces back and had massive lines defending in depth, so much so that the Germans couldn't do anything past '42-ish and the war was over in '43.

Here it is, on the lparchives. Done by uPen, the war was over by late November 1943.

That was also an AI thing right? uPen managed to encircle a bunch of guys or whatever it was and the the AI just flipped out and ran for Berlin and didn't put up a fight for the rest of the game.

uPen posted:

This AI is baffling/annoying me, it's acting like it's still got 800 miles of Steppe to give up when I'm 150 miles from Berlin. It didn't retreat everywhere this time and only gave up some of Moravia but it should be fighting tooth and nail for every inch no matter where that inch is. Maybe the German army is a lot weaker than I think it is? They've got a lot of tanks and the panzer-grenadiers are hell on wheels but most of the infantry divisions I'm seeing are in really poo poo shape and aren't fit for frontline duty. Oh well, if I continue my current rate of advance I won't have to play any more mud turns! I also think the Luftwaffe is falling apart, interdictions of my ground forces are becoming more and more rare and I'm able to bomb at will without any organized response.

Re Game design: Ultimate General is an example of a game that was designed in completely the opposite way and it's really strong in a whole different bunch of areas as a result.

I'm enjoying it. It's a different feel for sure, and I think it was somewhat panned when it came out, but I also think that's mostly because of the new air-planning-mini-game-aspect. I just set it to AI control based on what focus I want (bomb strategic, bomb air bases, interdict fighters, etc.). I enjoy the new amphibious assault mechanics, and overall it feels like basically just what I wanted.

There are some hilarious AARs including one where the allied player forgets to set their air directives and the Germans repel the D-Day landings.

algebra testes
Mar 5, 2011

Lipstick Apathy
You need SH4 + the Uboat addon.

Then you can either play with one mod, whose name I forget, that gives you realistic convoys. So realistic you won't find any, or Real Fleet Boat which among other things adds a great damage model.

Real Fleet Boat is the one I use. :)

algebra testes
Mar 5, 2011

Lipstick Apathy
RFB is the one I would think you want because it changes the damage model from hit point based, to actually modelling flooding and compartments and stuff like that. Which pretty much means if you sink 3 shots into the side of a ship it'll list slowly over for a while, take on water and then "sink". Where as in vanilla (and TMO i think, but I'm not sure) you'll hit it three times and it'll go "boom you sunk it" and do a canned routine or whatever." But you can still sink ships quicky, but if you do it's a result of them taking on lots of water quickly and not it running out of HP.

algebra testes

The other thing I've seen is the Germans can only win, literally only win, if you're playing a Human and they forget to send aircover for the D-Day landings. And then the end is "Russians got to Berlin, but I guess Germany surrenders and keeps all of France?"

For a beginner however, the game should be easier to get conceptually? (Beat up Germans in italy, beat them up all the way to berlin after d-day) and less of a nightmare than the Eastern front with a million counters.

Although, lmao, I didn't realise you had to start planning your Italian invasion like, the turn after you invade sicily in order to land in time. Whoops, I just sat my Amphib HQs on the sicilian coast for like 2 months. :v:
