SHENLONG BOOKS OPERATIONS POLICY

To the public, Shenlong Books is a simple library in the Xuhui District, with a "traditional" look and a wide selection of fiction and historical works. With any luck, this is all it will ever be.

Beneath the library is Shanghai 04 Office. Originally it was built in case of a Xanthic bombing, but we've converted and upgraded it into a base of operations for Team [REDACTED]. Exits exist elsewhere in the District for vehicles and powered armour, but Shenlong Books is the main ground entrance. With that in mind, procedures must be followed to ensure that Shenlong Books remains secret.

• All employees must be Office of Occult Intelligence recruits or External Assets in need of a cover job. Anyone else looking for a job should either be turned away or (if qualified) sent with a letter of recommendation to the Shanghai Library.
• All communication with Team [REDACTED] goes through the Library Director.
• Keep the occult works to a minimum - common and legal tomes early. Occult works banned to the public stay downstairs. Do not shelve them upstairs.
• Discourage too many visitors. Try to list at least half of our popular books as missing or checked out on our net directory, regardless of their actual status. This will not seem unusual for a library to most people.
• Keep our digital library outdated and unintuitive. If anyone asks, we focus on paper books to uphold "tradition" and achieve "verisimilitude".
• If you are working in Shenlong Books, park your car outside. Do not use the secret entrances, even if they are closer to your apartment.
• Do not bring powered armour into the library.

Protocol is liable to change depending on the status of [REDACTED]. The Library Director will keep you informed of any changes.

Location: Shenlong Books, Shanghai

Aspects: Completely Ordinary Contemporary Library; Business In Front, Agency In The Back

The sun is setting when you assemble in Shenlong Books. Night shifts are common these days - nobody has the decency to commit their magical crimes during the day any more - but at least you get your own digs. In the back of this contemporary library, tucked away in a staff-only corridor, is an elevator, and behind a secret panel there is the button that will take you to your cutting-edge sub-basement base.

Once you're there, if you're lucky, you'll get to look at pictures of dead bodies. If not, someone's committing worse crimes.

You don't actually have to be there until 6:30, so maybe now's the time to get a coffee, meet with the others and prepare yourselves.

. . .

Sup guys! Please post your character sheets here for quick reference later. Just the stats, I can read the OOC thread for the fluff. Rolls can be done in #redhandofdoom if you have witnesses OR by rolling Fudge dice in Orokos if you don't want to IRC it up (use the campaign name Privilege Threshold).

It's up to you exactly why you're here! Introduce yourselves, etc.

Zhang San
FP: 3

Zhang San makes tea. That's about the only thing he's happy about being back in Shanghai for- good green tea is so much easier to obtain. He sips it while he contemplates, for the 5th time that day, finding out who assigned him back here and shooting them in the kneecaps repeatedly.

He's the first one there, as always- habits die hard, and assassins who show up late to the party end up in the morgue. He sets up his cup at a table facing the door and reads the latest news on his AR goggles, looking, as usual, like the world's biggest nerd.

Zhang San (Formerly Yu Zhong)
High Concept: ACTION HACKER

Compel: Owing people favors, staying too long on an assignment, taking his foes seriously.

Aspect: Sympathy for the Angels
Invoke: Preserve innocence, protect the innocent, do the hard thing so someone else doesn't have to.
Compel: Do the hard thing because there's no one else, get pulled back into other people's problems, refuse reward for selfless actions out of guilt.

Santiago - FP: 1

Santiago entered the room not too long after, unceremoniously dumping the things he'd been carrying in his arms before falling into one of the chairs and making himself comfortable. "Jeeze, sometimes I wish I had an extra pair of hands, I've got too much stuff to carry." He said, once again lamenting the lack of pockets in the power armor piloting suit as he straightened up a laptop, pressed a button to reactivate his wrist mounted computer, took a sip of his cocoa cup, and flipped the trashy novel he'd been reading back open. He'd been steadily reading his way through the bookstore's contents since he'd arrived. Most of it was kind of old, but it was an alright way to kill time anyway. It was one of the current job's nicest perks.

"Evening Zhang," He said genially as he quickly skimmed through several of the chat channels open in the laptop, before pulling up the wrist computer's holographic keyboard to write a snappy reply for the internet argument he'd just recently become involved in. "News got anything interesting tonight or are we just sitting down to play poker for a while?"

Compel: To go out of his way to get revenge and distrust members of the Green Fury; To take extreme measures to ensure threats to his own safety are taken care of.

Yomikiri: Play Around, But Play For Keeps

Compel: To not treat things as seriously as they should; To escalate a situation to prove his superiority.

Skills
+5: Guns, Chaos Stagehand
+4: Athletics, Deceit
+3: Systems, Rapport
+2: Physique, Will
+1: Empathy, Scholarship

Chaos Stagehand: Uses Investigation as a base. Can act as a complement to other skills when dealing with pattern analysis borne of studying an extensive amount of data, and employ the Command trapping of Presence where appropriate.

Stunts:
Perfect Aim (Guns): When making an attack, take a -2 penalty to defenses and Alertness until the start of your next turn to gain a +1 to the attack roll.
Outrageous Untruths (Deceit): Use Deceit to apply the Overcome/Create Advantage trappings of Provoke, so long as falsehood is heavily involved in your claims.

Powers:
Item of Power: White Light Dragon Armor [-3]
-Supernatural Speed [-4]
-Wings [-1]
-One-Time Discount [+2]

Item of Power: Judgement Spark [-2] (A massive concealed energy weapon, intended for use in desperate situations to take down heavily armored enemies. Its effects are indicated below.)
--Target Acquired. Dispensing Judgement: Make a Guns attack. If it succeeds, add four shifts to the effect.
--D-Engine Depleted: Judgement Spark can normally only be used once per scene. Additional uses require the expenditure of a Fate Point.
--Hard Light: Your Guns attack roll is also treated as a roll to Create an Advantage. The extra shifts from Judgement Spark and the attack's weapon rating are not added when determining whether the action Succeeds with Style.

The Grand Equation [-0] (Cassandra's Tears reskin: Features the following trapping instead. Chaos Prediction: You have an uncanny ability to notice details others have missed and put them together to form a coherent picture of the future, borne of natural intuition sharpened by years of training to recognize patterns. When you make a prediction, which requires a minimum amount of information with which to make a logical connection, you place an aspect on the “world” related to the prediction that remains until it comes true or is otherwise resolved. However, your intuitive leap leaves some factors unaccounted for, giving the GM one free tag or compel against you to use before the prediction is resolved. You can perform more accurate predictions by spending a Fate Point to invoke your related Aspect: if you do so, the GM does not get the free tag or compel.)

Gear:
White Light Dragon Armor, Armor: 3.
White Light Weapon Systems (White Heat), Weapon: 3.
Judgement Spark, Weapon: 4.

He always meant to be on time, setting out with plenty of time from his usual reigime but then he always got distracted... today it was a fine old lady who needed help with her groceries... and of course how could he not help a citizen of this fair city, that was his duty, his calling... his reason for being! "Good Evening gentlemen! How are you two on this fine evening, has the city been treating you well" he asked boisterously as he came in, walking behind Santiago and giving him a friendly slap on the back "I see you are continuing to expand your breadth of knowledge through the oldest Artform!" He headed over to brew himself some tea, his own personal supply rather than the stuff they were given, of course anyone was free to sample the glorious flavor at anytime they wished "What goes on at the world at large Mr San?" he inquired over his shoulder.

High Concept: A Will and Body of steel, A Gentleman beyond reproach!

Trouble: A Modern day Atlas

Background: A Line Lasting Generations
Invoke: My Family once encountered something similar...., Ah the Wilforson estate may be able to help I will give them a call, This line will not end here not now!
Compel: Curse you Baron Rupert why must you haunt my family!, Weight of ages

Yomikiri: Pure Hearted Englishman
Invoke: Heartfelt Pleas and Inspiring people, Knowing how to act in social situations
Compel: Cannot turn away a request for aid, Must avoid improper act or Deed, Old favors and promises coming back to bite him

Volume Three: I have no time for fear
Invoke: You call that a wound?, No matter what madness I see I shall press on
Compel: Leave no man behind, Trying to save those who cannot be saved

OVA 1 (Santiago) : Benevolent Benfactor
Invoke: Convincing people to Help, Finding Resources when for other people
Compel: Addiction to Charity, Can't be Selfish

OVA 2: Expensive Limousine

5 Phsyique
4 Fist, A GENTLEMAN’S DEMEANOR! (probably going to replace Rapport)
3 Will, Athletics
2 Alertness, Empathy, Presence
1 Resources, Provke, Deceit, Performance, Contacts

Stunts:

Collegiate Lineman (OW:156): In combat, you gain a +1 to Physique-based rolls where your size would prove an advantage.

FISTS OF STEEL: Fists are W:2

Step Into the Blow (YS:152): When you use Fists to defend against a close-quarters attack and fail that defense, you may sacrifice your next action to counterattack immediately (with Fists) at +1.

Best Foot Forward (YS:155): People just like you, especially when you're deliberately trying to make a good first impression (page YS:138). You gain a +1 on your roll to make a good first impression, and failing that roll cannot give you a negative temporary aspect or make the situation worse.

Tough Stuff (YS:152): The stuff of blunt trauma - fists, sticks, and stones - pose little trouble for you. Against such things, you have a natural Armor:1 (which stacks with other forms of protection). This does not apply to things like blades, bullets, and burns, but it makes you a beast in a burly brawl.

Teflon Persona (YS:154): It's difficult to make you look bad in social conflicts. Provided that the people present are aware of who you are, you gain Armor:1 against any social attacks.

At this point is when Aidan stepped in. Naturally, the punk was late, and naturally he couldn't care less. Aidan didn't really drive all that often before now, and the traffic didn't help matters. Doesn't matter if the traffic was an old lady jaywalking across the street, still pissed him off. Thankfully said old lady was not harmed in any way, shape, or form, and Aidan managed to get to the library without killing anybody else.

Now he was here, and now he was looking up at the two who were with him that one time in Berlin. Seeing Santiago made a vein in Aidan's forehead bulge. Seeing San just reminded him of the awkward as hell conversations with various eldritch relatives he never wants to see again. Of course there was also that one guy who he helped with that thing, but that's besides the point. Aidan decided to break out the flask a little bit earlier than usual this evening. Nothing like cheap whiskey to forcefully drown embarrassing memories.

After the first round of punching his mind with alcohol, Aidan drags a chair over by a wall and sits down in it. "Frikkin' kid with the frikkin' questions, god drat eight-legged parasite, stupid jaywalking dumbasses, fuckin'..." Aidan mutters, his low voice almost making it unintelligible.

Now he's here, at Shenlong Books, to look at pictures of dead people in the secret basement. More likely, though, the team's just been assigned to one of the more serious, occult problems in this godforsaken city, and instead of finishing up his day looking at pictures of dead people in an office he's going to start his night looking at actual dead people at a crime scene.

He nods wearily at the group when he sees them. "Evening. You got some more of that tea?"

Stunts:
Counselor(shrink): You have some formal education
in professional counseling or psychotherapy.
Your skill can be used to justify another character’s
recovery from moderate or severe social
or mental consequences, provided you have the
time and opportunity to provide them with the
full extent of your services as a counselor

Resilient Self-Image(will): Your sense of self is
strong, enabling you to endure more psychological
punishment than most. You may take two
additional mild mental consequences

Read the Surface(empathy): You can get a sense of
someone quickly when trying to “read” them
. Your first attempt to read someone
takes less than a minute of interaction, instead
of the usual ten. Any subsequent efforts with the
same person do not enjoy this benefit.

Best Foot Forward(Rapport): People just like you, especially
when you’re deliberately trying to make
a good first impression. You gain a +1
on your roll to make a good first impression,
and failing that roll cannot give you a negative
temporary aspect or make the situation worse.

Capable Researcher: Some say you were
born in a library. Any scholarly research you
do is completed two time increments
faster than usual—due in large part to the fact
that you’ve probably read something about it
before.

Aidan looks at Marcus with a puzzled expression. "...I'm sorry have we not met before?" Aidan responds about the 'gentleman' comment. Then Marcus mentions something about pride in your work and Aidan couldn't help but be an rear end and laugh at that. "Pft HAHAHA, Haha, that's adorable. No."

Then Kim finally decided to show up, and the scent of baked goods rises from the two boxes that were on the table. Aidan sniffed the air, looking over the boxes as though he were analyzing a bomb. There were some good things about being human, and these strange, fat drenched, greasy baked goods were a bit of a guilty pleasure. After opening the boxes a couple times to gaze upon the glorious contents, Aidan finally made his decision. "...dibs on a bear-claw."

When you finally assemble and make it to the elevator with your doughnuts, your assistant is waiting!

Zhong Fanghua

Fanghua's job is to be here a lot so you don't have to. To the public she's the Library Director. To you she's one of the OOI's mostly interchangeable administrative assistants, assigned here to handle all the boring stuff and order the interns and such around. The other employees whisper rumours that she's had nanomedical treatments to disguise her real identity, or that she's part robot. She finds none of them amusing. You are pretty sure she runs on coffee and pills.

"Good evening, sirs, ma'am. If you don't mind, we've got a problem..."

Friday February 10 2119, 6:31PM CST
Location: [REDACTED]

Aspects: Welcome To My Underground Lair; O.O.I. Offices; Beyond Cutting Edge Technology

Fanghua leads you out of the elevator and down the hall into the main office. As you enter the window-screens flicker into life and a cloud of holo- and AR windows float in, just in case you weren't already overloaded with information.

Your assistant dismisses the ones that aren't relevant and summons a dossier on one of the windows. You find yourselves looking at a man in his 50s with a surprisingly young face, greying hair, weary eyes and clothes so old-fashioned they should get pension.

"This is Lin Tang-yu. Originally from New Guilin, registered sorcerer, consulted for a few corporations like Unity Inc... We suspected he had triad connections but he was clean every time we checked."

Fanghua moves on and calls up a gallery of maps, photos and footage on the next two windows. Some of it has been skimmed from social networking sites. "At 17:57 Mr Lin fell off a Deng Xiaoping arcology rooftop to his death. He landed in the road here. A police patrol craft passed by the area and spotted a ritual circle on the tower roof here..."

"Both sites were secured by 18:05. So far we've determined that a magical ritual took place but was interrupted around the time of death."

Finally she calls up footage from nearby cameras and people's phones, arranged in a line based on their height. A figure in some very old-fashioned clothes who looks a lot like he's diving plummets down the line as you watch.

"Also, Mr Lin was falling at approximately 20 metres per second per second."

You can assume you guys have your own rooms here with pretty much anything you want that can fit in an underground base, by the way.

Absentmindedly taking bites of the bear-claw in his hand, Aidan stares at the massive amounts of footage of another human being stupid. At the mention of putting the video on loop, Aidan immediately calls a remote to his hand. Hopefully no one was looking at the strange space between the bend as the table and his palm bend to meet. Aidan then lets space snap back into its normal place, and goes about clicking the remote.

At this, the screen with the highest viewpoint rewinds back to a certain point. It then begins to loop for a bit, showing the grisly death over and over again. Then another click sounds and for some reason it rewinds. Then it plays forward again, then it rewinds, then forward, back and forth and back and forth. It's like watching the world's most grimdark game of pong ever between the floor and the top of the screen. Suddenly the speakers turn on to play-god dammit Aidan.

Needless to say, Aidan is grinning like an idiot.

Mr Lin

The falling footage loops! There are a few blind spots in the trip and different cameras have different angles, but Mr Lin spends most of the trip moving straight downward, head-first, with his arms by his sides. After a while he starts slowly moving his arms up and begins flailing them around like he's trying to cast a spell or learn how to fly or something. By the end he's just flailing - he throws his arms over his head hoping to protect it or at least shield his eyes just as he reaches the street. Mr Lin does not look happy with his descent.

Aidan plays some music. Fanghua looks like she's going to need more pills.

Maynard sips his tea and takes a closer look at the images. The weariness is gone, replaced by focus.

"If he worked with Unity, he may have gotten too close to a criminal operation of theirs and they took him out to keep their secrets - or they could've had a contractor take him out. Do we have his recent correspondance yet? What about recent purchases or financial info? How did he seem the last time the OOI checked up on him? Basically, did he act like he thought he was in danger?"

Then the music cuts in. "God damnit Aidan, turn it off."

He takes another sip to hide the slight grin that's forming on his lips. Well, in a job like this, you take the humour you can get... but now isn't the time. They can save the jokes for after the case.

Can someone give me a height and time on the point where he first starts moving his arms? It might be a hint on the range of control or power of what we're dealing with."

While the others talk, Maynard sets down the cup and puts his hands the holo-screen, then starts shifting the images and drawing up new windows. Pretty soon he's got a timeline set up.

code:
Dead: Lin Tang-yu, registered sorcerer

Prior to incident: Lin was a contractor, worked with Unity Inc., Triad connections suspected but unproven.
Possibly drew ritual circle on a Deng Xiaoping rooftop.
-Who drew circle/attempted ritual and why? If Lin, was it planned, on impulse or due to emergency?
-Was the circle prepared beforehand?
*Review Lin's recent economic+social activities, job interactions, OOI surveillance.

??:?? to 17:57: ritual initiated.
-What ritual?
-For what purpose?
*Arcane analysis.

17:57: ritual interrupted and Lin fell from roof under anomalous gravity (20ms^-2).
Eventually attempted and failed to magically(?) slow/stop descent and died on impact.
-Who/what interrupted it?
-Why did he fall? Forced, jumped or accidentally fell?
-Was he under a debilitating or threatening influence?
-What caused gravitational anomaly?
-Why didn't he attempt to stop descent sooner?
-When did the ritual stop relative to his death?
*Cross-check with gravity-altering magic and technology, specifications of building, physiological+arcane autopsy.

17:57 to 18:05: footage of Lin's descent appeared on social media platforms. Police craft spotted ritual circle.
-If Lin was attacked, did perpetrator flee here? Was an indirect means of attack used?
*Interview police, review security footage.

18:05: ritual site and site of death secured.
*Analysis of both locations.
"Is that everything? Anyway, if we can zoom in on that image with the ritual circle then we could shed some light on what exactly happened."

Using Lore and checking out the ritual circle: 4dF+5 3. Based on the images they have, he's trying to answer questions like these: What's it drawn in? Does Maynard recognise the language? What general change was the performer trying to effect, and on what target?

Edit: this is assuming we have a picture of the ritual circle from the police craft up on the screen somewhere. If we don't then I guess we better get to that rooftop.

Maynard

There are multiple pictures of the circle, thankfully! Maynard can see it was chalked onto the roof, and a lot of the symbols are in Tsath-Yo; the specific purpose is unknown. Rune recognition software doesn't match it to any known spells either, but it has an 84% match with Contact Those Who Dwell Beyond - a spell used to try and summon up an outsider to extract information. This is likely an advanced, more specific version.

There's a nearby device - a projector hooked up to a laptop left on a crate - that was probably used to help draw it accurately.

Zhong Fanghua

Fanghua pulls up more windows and calculations.

"The fall took approximately six seconds. Mr Lin started trying to move at 3.1 seconds. He was around a hundred metres from the rooftop by then. ...We know he was talking to the Wukong Corp about contract work but we don't know what came of it. He didn't leave any personal data at the scene so we're looking for his current residence in the Arcology."

She moves towards her desk so she can play mission control while Zhang San (and anyone going with him) head out.

Where you head next is up to you! You can make some rolls on the way if you have something in mind.

Aidan stopped grinning as everyone started telling him to cut it out, having had his brief childish amusement for the minute. With a click of the remote, the music stopped. Aidan had no use for the remote any more, having had his fun with it. Therefore, the fate of the remote was to be tossed back to the table.

With another bite of his bear-claw, Aidan headed to his office, waving his hand as he does so. "Yo," he managed to say through a mouthful of bear-claw, "I'm headin' out. Better than hangin' around like an idiot." A few moments and he's in his office. Aidan loaded and holstered his service pistol and magnum revolver. A crumpled pack of cigarettes and a refill of his flask from a cheap whiskey bottle under the table would make sure he got through the tedium of another crime scene. After all, he was all out of bear-claw.

With everything he needed to get through this, Aidan grabbed a leather jacket and walked out into the hall. Whether or not that jacket was his is unknown, though it certainly fits the punk image he has going for him. He put his hands behind his head and stretched. "Alright class, let's go on a field trip to see the Amazing Falling Splat."

Santiago - FP: 1

"Who needs to drive when you can walk to where you need to be?" Santiago asked, shrugging. "Or fly, if the situation demands that. And speaking of which, if you'll excuse me gents..." As the group arrived at the OOI hangars, he slipped away, riding an elevator to the top floor. Strolling toward the first bay, Tiago grinned. No matter how many times he did it, suiting up for a job never got old.

The White Light was inside, resting in the middle of the room. Approaching it, Santiago grabbed its wrist, squeezed its trigger, and tapped certain specific spots in the armor's frame. With a sound of rushing air, the armor split in half, several parts retracting to make room for its pilot. Once he was in position, he pressed a button on the inside of the powered armor's arm. It snapped close with a click.

"Wake up, baby. Gimme a system's check." Santiago spoke, as thin nanomaterial glasses covered his eyes, providing him perfect vision of the outside world.

"Dragon Armor prototype model 0001 activated. Verifying systems integrity." A melodic woman's voice said.

"Pilot integration systems online." Carefully, Santiago tried to move his hands, then legs. The armor responded perfectly, as usual.

"Communication systems online." The teenaged Warchild nodded. "Great. Keep going." The voice distortion system was already active. The external audio output created a warbling, gruffer sounding echo.

"Data output systems online." Numbers and words flashed in front of his vision. He didn't pay attention to them. He'd seen them a million times already.

"Ancillary D-Engine functions online." The internal power source flared up for a moment, before settling into an almost inaudible hum as the silencer kicked in.

"Neural link systems online." The sting of microneedles on his neck was practically unnoticeable, but its effects were not. Jumping from voice activation to interpreting the electric impulses going through Santiago's brain would speed up his reactions immensely and facilitate communication with the White Light...

"Weapon systems online." ...Like that. Santiago stared at the lascannon protruding from 'his' wrist proudly. "Way too much firepower for such a small package, yes sir. Just like I like it."

"Mobility systems online." The floor in front of the White Light split open, revealing magnetized rail tracks, as did the bay door they led to. Engaging the armor's thrusters, Santiago began moving forward on the rails, first slowly, but then faster and faster as they added to his increasing speed...

...And then the White Light was thrown out the bay, and the main thruster systems kicked in, sending it flying up into the skies. "White Light Armor online. All systems nominal."

"Hell yeah!" Santiago couldn't just keep it to an ear to ear grin. To let some of his elation out, he rolling in mid-air, uploading the coordinates of the crime scene. Moments later, he had a destination.

"Guys? This is Santiago, primed and ready. Heading for the scene now." He broadcasted to his fellow OOI operatives. "See you there. Don't keep me waiting too long. I don't have time to get old like you!" Santiago's laughter was drowned by the flare of the engine as he rocketed through the skies toward today's work.

Some more info:

• They're still digging into his correspondence! So far his email is the usual really dull freelance wizard stuff. Did you know freelance stuff can be boring? Well, it is. His call logs are a little more promising, because some of his regular calls are encrypted. They're working on it! The key would be nice.
• Recent purchases are all pretty bland for a wizard - basic ritual components, convenience store food, hookers - but his bank account has had more money coming and going than his purchases and job would justify, according to OOI computers.
• The OOI last checked on him a month ago after he applied for a license to learn arcanotherapy and he seemed more or less fine - he was a little stiff and nervous but not worried for his safety, so when he checked out the agent making the call just assumed he'd been playing a saucy videogame or something.

Location: 109th Street, Hongzhuang Subdistrict, Deng Xiaoping Memorial Arcology

Aspects: A Maze of Twisty Passages, All Alike; O.O.I. Crime Scene

A lot of DXMA is actually lower than most of Shanghai - nobody really wanted to look at a giant mess of skyscrapers in the skyline. The roads in are gentle and sloping and natural so you'd hardly notice if it weren't for the massive identical skyscrapers and the ten-story-high mess of neon signs that fills major commercial streets like 109th.

Right now this area has been blocked off with police tape (real and augmented reality) in a two-block radius just in case. Police cars have parked at the edges to make sure the crowd of pedestrians gawking, retweeting and taking sepia-toned snaps doesn't get any funny ideas, but closer to the scene it's all OOI powered armour security and forensics wizards. Clouds are gathering, so some drones are spreading a cover high over the scene in case it Rains.

Mr. Lin's body is lying in the middle of the road, in a pool of blood. Once he smashed into the ground he had the decency to land on his face, but it's still pretty ugly. On the bright side, the road held up pretty well. A few metres closer to the tower and he would have totalled someone's car though.

Well, here you are! Who wants to look at a dead body Time to roll dice and assess poo poo!

Since this is a murder mystery, I'm gonna be clear on how I do it.

Clues will never be hidden behind dice rolls. If you're in an area where you can get clues, and you have the right skills and say what you're doing, that is it. You don't actually need to roll to get a clue. However, if you do roll to investigate, or place advantages/scene aspects/whatever, I might give you a little extra, or an item, or some other cool thing that isn't needed to advance the plot.
