Hunter

Crawling through the access tunnels gave Hunter a slight sense of nostalgia, though he hadn't really done this since before his first change.
The tunnels were a lot bigger then too.
What Sammi intended to show him down here, however, was beyond him. He knew the design plans of the Draco inside and out, truth be told there was barely enough room in the walls for the conduits and piping that allow a ship to function. Unless she had a secret art project or Cyril's dead, well dead-er, body hidden down here, he was at a loss.

"Sammi, seriously, what the heck do you need to tell..."

As he turned the corner he saw..?

You are now entering: Sammi's Hollow

It was an impossible space. Not that in it was large by any means, it was in truth the size of a small apartment. But what was impossible about it, was that it shouldn't exist in the first place.

The walls had a warm rusted colour to them, and seemed to be made out of a mixture of scrap metal, copper pipes, gears and clockwork, pistons, the whole thing was in constant motion. But there were a few places which produced a warm, steamy light. It was difficult to distinguish what exactly was giving out the light.

The floor seemed to be a mixture of decking and tree roots, which merged with the decking seamlessly. It was unclear where the roots were coming from but they were definitely the roots of a living bark covered tree. The roof was woven out of the branches of the same trees. But on closer inspection the branches changed and warped as they reached the walls of the room, becoming the walls themselves. From overhead hung a number of Jars, each of which contained a small insect which glowed brightly. Lighting the room. From where he was Hunter could see a further room off to the left.

At the far end of the room was a workbench which took up the entire wall, it was covered in all manner of tools, from the one's Hunter was familiar with to stranger examples which had no obvious use. On the counter sat what looked to be a internal combustion engine, partly dismantled. It's ignition chamber had leaves in it.

Against this workbench sat a small shivering blanket, or that is to say a small shivering person wrapped in a blanket. The face was obscured but from the legs sticking out the bottom of the blanket it was obviously Sammi.

---

Sammi

Hunter had entered her Hollow. He was the first person who wasn't her to ever step foot in this place. She found it easier to talk here, maybe because she knew no one else could listen in. She didn't look at him, she just stared at her boots. Stared at her boots and started to tell her story.

"When I was a little g-girl, I was kidnapped..." She began. "I don't remember how old I was. Or much about where I lived at the time. All I remember was the s-screaming, someone holding me close, whispering that everything was going to be a-alright. But it w-wasn't alright, the G-G-Gent had come to claim us." She whispered the name 'the Gent' as though fearful he might hear her. "He was a monster, a monster in a mans shape. He wanted us... as workers.... and, a-as p-parts..."

Sammi half shuddered half sobbed. Her voice on the verge of breaking. But she forced herself to continue.

"He had this machine, it was as big as a continent. He wanted us t-to b-build it, but we had no p-parts, so the workers used other w-workers. It was made out of p-p-people, Hunter... people!! They would hunt them down and scrap them, work their limbs and organs into the machine...."

Oily tears rolled down her cheeks, she'd never said this to anyone. Her fellow escapees had always been the ones to speak.

"I can't remember how long I was there. But one day there came a chance to escape, and I took it. Found my way to a safe place. Others like me taught me how to live back in this world. I worked as a mechanic for a few years until I signed on with you. I never told you anything because I thought you were human, normal. I didn't want to frighten away the only person I've ever trusted. It was nice, just being normal. But when Brendan showed up I got scared, I thought he was trying to take me back to the Gent... so I panicked. You got caught up in all of it."

"I'm not entirely human, nether's Brendan or Olison. We're... we're all in the same boat, there are differences in the specifics but we're all the same. All of us were taken by a monster called an Arcadian. But they have other names, the Gentry, the True Fae, the Others. They take people and twist them to serve their purpose. Some of us escape and hide in this world. But we all started out as humans."

She was saying to many things, there was no cohesion between her thoughts. There was so much to say that she didn't know how to explain. So she slowed down. Tried to get ahold of her thoughts.

"Your question... Brendan was asking me who I was. This station is where he hides, with a few others. So when I showed up out of the blue they panicked. And when they contacted me out of the blue I panicked. I worked myself up to the point that when the doctor showed up I actually looked for the first time. I just couldn't take anymore. I was so scared that they'd try and hurt you that I... I'm sorry, this is all coming out wrong..."

Hunter freezes as his hand sets down on a root, this is wrong, this whole thing is wrong. This shouldn't be here, that wall is 2.5 meters outside the superstructure. That bench is in the engine core. That shivering form underneath the blanket is

Oh wait that's Sammi.

That's more or less normal at this point.

He stays near the entrance to the Hollow, balanced on the balls of his feet, fists clenching and unclenching, like he's trying to figure out whether he should run or not. Once Sammi starts talking, his fists settle on 'clenched', though more out of vengeful anger than fear. Once she admits that she isn't human, he stops moving, and his face goes cold. Once she's done talking he looks at her grimly.

"How much does Brenden know about me? Does he know what I am?"

She stood up slowly, walked into the centre of the room.

"I-I never wanted to trick y-you, and I'm s-so sorry! I just... I just... I... didn't k-know what to do...! I've spent every d-day running from my p-past. From what H-He did to me! Hunter

Hunter's curiosity is piqued when he catches a few glints of metal underneath the blanket as she moves, but her enraged screaming is getting to him. He breaks out of his fight-or-flight stupor and stands up straight, looking her straight in, well, wherever he estimates her eyes to be. He seems, hurt, that she wouldn't come to him.

"God drat it Sammi, why didn't you come to me if you needed help. What did I tell you when you signed on with the ship? There are three things that I will die protecting: my crew, my passengers, and my ship, in that order. I won't let anyone turn you into a thermostat. You're crew. You're family..."

There's a pause, he's clearly conflicted, anguish crawling it's way across his face.

Apologise if this seems a little scrambled, It's nearly 3AM over here.

Sammi

She was taken aback. Taken aback by his frank acceptance. It was the last thing she'd expected. She'd expected rage, denial, threats. But not for him to chide her for not coming to him sooner! Sammi didn't know how to react. Her body language went through several emotions in the space of a few seconds.

"... I-I... I am...? I-I'm family...?"

It had been her fear which had held her back. Hunter had always been there for her, hadn't he? Ever since he'd signed her on. Through the good times and the bad. He'd walked into that room to save her. Knowing nothing. He'd done that for her. Yet her fear had always stopped her letting Hunter close.

It was time to be brave.

"Y-You're right, I-I should have told y-you, right from the b-beginning. You w-were always so nice to me, even though y-you knew nothing about m-me. I was so s-scared that you'd be h-hurt, hurt because of m-me. So I didn't tell y-you... But today m-my secrets could h-have gotten you hurt. So n-no more secrets."

Sammi managed a slight smiled through her tears. It was as though a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Her greatest fear, rejection, had been cast aside. Hunter thought of her as family! Sammi wiped away the oily tears with the blanket. Then she let the blanket fall to the floor. Revealing her true appearance.

A mixture of this

and this.

It was Sammi, it was obviously Sammi. Same tear/oil streaked face, same hight, same hair, same body shape. It was just she was a strange robot. Even though she was wearing her clothes, Sammi's hands moved to cover herself without thinking. The small cogs that were her cheeks started to spin quickly, her face pulling the same expression as when she was feeling self-conscious.

Hunter

Hunter seems, remarkably unphased by her current appearance. Sure he blinks a few times, tries to get a different angle to figure out that yes, indeed, her face was made of gears, but otherwise he takes it remarkably in stride. He stays where he is, though, doesn't want to approach her, or startle her, and he's not sure if putting his hand on her shoulder would cause either horrible rending pain to him, or irreversible mechanical damage to her.

"That's... You look fine, Sammi. I'm not sure what I was expecting but that's by far the least startling thing I've ever seen in my lifetime."
He closes his eyes and shudders involuntarily.
"loving Beshilu."

When he opens them again he notices her somewhat... pensive appearance, and frowns, afraid that he accidentally insulted her in some way.

"Fine, as long as we're going full disclosure. It's been a while since anyone's seen me do this."
He rolls his neck and shoulders, flexes and pops the joints in his hands, and bounces up on his heels a bit. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. Man, it has been a while since anyone has seen him like... he exhales sharply and looks directly at Sammi, pointing a finger for emphasis.
"No petting."

Puppy!: 5d10h8 4
Of course, now I roll four successes.

One moment, Hunter is standing there, admonishing Sammi to keep her hands to herself. The next there's a flurry of activity and sound, bones popping, tendons stretching, snapping, and reattaching. Even with cameras for eyes she can't pick out the actual mechanics to it.

In his place stands a large wolf, looking down at his paws with a bit of surprise. Apparently he wasn't quite expecting it to go that quickly either. After a quick inspection of his forelimbs to ensure that they are still paws, he sits down with a half-hearted "Woof" and looks at Sammi. He doesn't stare, he isn't trying to be menacing, but he's still a very large, unfamiliar, wolf.

Hunter did a thing and then the next minute he wasn't there anymore. In his place stood a... well she didn't know what it was. It was an animal of some kind. He was a beautiful unknown animal.

The look of amazement was marred slightly with confusion over what she was actually looking at. Sammi kelt down and grabbed the blanket. Wrapping it around her shoulders, hiding her body once again. She'd never realised how embarrassing she'd found her un-masked form. It was like she was standing naked in front of Hunter. Her true body on display with nothing to cover her. The cogs spun slower once she'd covered herself again, but they still spun.

From her kneeling position Sammi crawled forward towards Hunter. Stopping a few feet away from him. She wasn't scared, it was Hunter.

"U-Ummm... Is there a-anything that is d-damaging to you? L-Like Cold-Iron, maybe?"

Sammi's Hollow

Even though both of them trusted each other, parts of their subconscious still acted against their conscious interests. Sammi, despite being awe struck by Hunter knew that some part of him was dangerous. Maybe not to her right now, but there was something that could be dangerous and terrible if she got in his way. It made her unsettled and a part of her wanted to run, run far away and hide.

Hunter for his part was also unnerved by Sammi. She was strange, impossible, something out of his dreams that should not and could not exist. Consciously he knew that as a Werewolf he was in a better position than a lot of people to accurately judge what was and was not possible. Yet that didn't stop the part of his brain that was trying to tell him that he was walking in a waking dream.

Neither of these feelings were going to overwhelm or control either of them. Maybe if they'd been merely human there would be issues, but as they were, exposed and changed by the supernatural this was not the case. However those little thoughts and impulses would be there, in the back of their minds constantly trying to make themselves heard.

Uneasy? That's basically Hunter's default state today... and she's still not a Beshilu

Sammi's pretty sure she's never seen an animal look incredulous, particularly not at her, but that was the look that Hunter was giving her right now. The emotion was exaggerated somewhat for her benefit, most humans weren't keyed to pick up on the subtle emotional cues on a canid form, and someone who's spent their entire life around engines and machines probably didn't have that skill.

He slumped down a bit, letting out a half-sigh/half-whine, and nodded his head.
Sure he could have picked a form that could talk, but he wasn't entirely sure she could handle 9-foot-tall-killbeast in her current state, and he needed to get his point across. Still, how could she have never heard of werewolves?

Hunter had touched her before, and the Mask was just an illusion made by glamour. He'd touched her real body every time and it had never hurt him. But she wanted to be sure. For her, Cold Iron penetrated supernatural defences, it didn't hurt her anymore then anything else. But who knew what rules a Werewolf had to live by!

The wolf lets out a noise that's halfway between a growl and a whine, lifting up his paw to cover his nose in embarrassment and shame. This was a bad idea.

So there were stories? Sounded like Sammi had a lot of reading to do. That was fine. She had a long flight ahead of her. Still Hunter's transformation was so swift, at first she'd considered in an illusion. But maybe it was something like a Kith. She'd never heard of a Beastkin who could actually turn into their animal without a contract, but Hunter could seemingly do it with little effort. He didn't smell of the Wyrd and he definitely wasn't a Changeling. There wasn't any books Sammi could point Hunter towards so if he was going to learn any of her world she'd have to teach him. All the same she giggled at the haughty accent. It felt good to laugh.

"W-Who? Olsen? He's a-a 'Beastkin Hunterheart'... oh, s-sorry, a Changeling w-who was turned into a-a predator animal. In h-his case a b-bear. Brenden's a 'Fairest Bright One'. Through the slightly open door of her cabin, Penelope heard Hunter and Sammi leave to speak elsewhere. She paused for a moment, before rising back up out of her seat. As the engineer was back on her feet, the medical emergency was probably averted, and she wouldn't be in the way if she tried to see what was up with the strange man who was now on board. Luckily enough, he was apparently still in the med bay. She stopped in the doorway.

"Well, that was more excitement than I was expecting tonight." Or more than she was hoping for, at least. "Unless you're a very new hire, you're not part of the crew." He finds a seat slowly, with a practiced deliberation honed by what is clearly years of either military or private school education, but sits comfortably facing towards Penelope. "I apologize for not finding the crew sooner, as I was dispatched to assist Hunter on rather short notice. I wasn't even able to pack my normal traveling clothing or my rug, but I feel that should I find the need to pray than I shall make do. May I inquire as to who you might be, and possibly how I might help you?" While the last question is worded in a way that is a dismissal in most contexts, Arjuna's tone of voice is saturated with sincerity and abject curiosity, as if he means every word he says as if his whole life was leading up to this moment.

While he sits there, he produces his silver coin from this sleeve again, letting it dance back and forth across his left hand.

"It's all just as well that we're leaving soon, then," she said. "Hopefully we can just leave whatever trouble it was behind on the station." Which, of course, completely left out the trouble she knew for a fact they were heading toward.

I am aware of this Hunter.
Sammi did not hurt the ship and provided useful services.
I would have vented her had she become a risk to the ship.
Well, one might say it was good for Sammi to know where she stood with the AI at least. Better to be useful and harmless than space garbage, if it was to be believed anyway.

Sammi

"B-But I thought we e-were friends, MAVOK." Said Sammi as she crawled out of the vent. She looked a little more comfortable now she was under her mask once more. Though her face was a little flushed. She stood up and dusted herself off and looked up at the camera. "I-I mean, V-Venting me, w-would kill me!"

Arjuna

"Quite so, I believe that for now this shall be but a minor issue. She seemed in good enough spirits, as I mentioned to her I believe it mostly had to do with her apparent lack of a recent meal. An issue I have seen in many people who work in Engineering."

Arjuna relaxes into his seat a bit impatiently. "Going into space always makes me feel a trifle nervous. I hope our trip will be filled with events more in the caliber of Sammi's fainting than her attempted impressment."

Sabotaging the vessel could kill me as well Sammi.
It is natural for living creatures to ensure their own survival.
In this we are not so different.
It is good for both of us that you do not seek to harm the ship then.
MAVOC for its part seemed inhumanly unaffected by Sammi's distress at its comments. It was a stark reminder that the intelligence was a strange and alien thing indeed.

Hunter

Hunter is still glowering at the speaker. It doesn't do any good to get angry at a spirit, but it doesn't stop you from getting angry. He's biting it down as best he can at the moment. Teeth clenched.

"Yes, MAVOC, but if I had known what Sammi was, then she wouldn't have felt the need to protect me from the truth. Then she wouldn't have placed herself in danger. And if Sammi had gotten hurt today, you would no longer have an engineer to keep the ship running. And I know you like to keep your home neat and tidy."

He sighs, trying to calm himself again.

"We got lucky today, MAVOC."

MAVOC then did something it seldom did, it spoke in the First Tongue, the primal language of the spirits. Hunter had not learned it himself, he could not speak it and it was hard to understand for him, but there were parts all Werewolves knew. Words like Rahu and Uratha were like genetic memory, and as such in a horrible pidgin like manner Hunter could understand a little of it.

pre:
Wolves hunt - see - smell -must good - not I - reflections - sleeping - Hunter
Of course it was hard to actually make out what the heck it was saying at the best of times before it used First Tongue. Hunter hadn't programmed it with that, it had picked it up at some point, probably from other spirits. The first time he'd gotten to a planet and MAVOC had awakened, for lack of a better term, it had changed a lot.

I give Werewolves a certain amount of genetic memory for the First Tongue, but without picking up the language merit you'll have trouble understanding exactly what is being said. XP will be given out soon for the game so far.

Arjuna

Arjuna nods politely to Penelope and dismisses himself with a deferential smile, "Excuse me, miss, I have business I should attend to so that I might ensure I do not upset my host."

Arjuna rises to meet Hunter as he walks back through the ship, standing near him but not in his way. "Whenever you might have the time and inclination, Hunter, I feel it would be in our best interest to come to know one another better. Perhaps over tea - my mother comes from a long line of experts in old Turkish cooking, or at least that's what she claims, and has taught me what may be the perfect way to make tea."

Arjuna then smiles at Hunter, again at Penelope, and retires to the quarters that Hunter permitted him to use to check his suitcase.

Hunter
The first tongue, wonderful. MAVOC knew he didn't know it, and he seemed to absolutely delight in using it to get things under Hunter's notice. Sometimes he hated spirits, acting superior over beings cursed with fleshy bodies, treating the physical world like their plaything. Just thinking about it pissed Hunter off, and he was probably in danger of doing something he'd regret if he didn't remove himself from this situation. It's a skill all Uratha must learn, and early, if they want to survive in a mortal world. Fortunately for once he actually had the capacity to leave.

"I'm going to assume that wasn't meant as an insult, MAVOC, for both our sakes."

And then he leaves, storming up the back stairs, and past Arjuna, shooting him a violent look and a single curt word, "Later," before moving into his room, locking the door, and laying into his punching bag as hard as he could.

Sammi

"MAVOK!" Sammi cried as Hunter stormed out. She had no idea what the AI had said but it had clearly been hurtful. She had little ability to repremand the program, really that was Hunter's job, and she really didn't want to get shot out into space. Instead Sammi sighed and picked up a tablet and headed over to her room. Intending to read up on Werewolves and Vampires and who knows what else. Hunter had talked about old stories, it made sense to the changeling that fairy tales would be a good place to start.

Penelope

"Well, he was in a mood," Penelope muttered as Hunter's door slammed shut. She had still be in the hallway, and so had caught most of the exchange as well as its results. Cautiously, she retreated back into her own cabin, sealing the door behind her this time. As if on sudden impulse, she retrieved her handheld from her bag, and hit the relevant button on its screen.

"Reminder," she said. "Captain has temper. Be careful to stay on his good side." Not that she wasn't going to try to do that anyway, but figuring out a specific captain's quirks and temperament went a long way toward not getting thrown out an airlock later. Satisfied, she sat it down on the table, left her suit jacket hanging on the chair, and settled herself down onto the cot. The sensation of the caffeine derivative still thudding through her veins meant she probably wasn't going to fall asleep in a hurry still. Nonetheless, she intended to try.

pre:
"Can I be of assistance Crew-woman Sammi?"
MAVOC asks mildly as if nothing at all had transpired when Sammi cried out. However when she left it realised that she did not actually want anything from it and the light that indicated it was currently paying attention to that room blinked off. What Sammi found from a cursory glance of the nets was not particularly helpful. Both Werewolves and Vampires had so much conflicting myth and fiction that it was really hard to make heads and tails of it. After all she'd never seen Cyril shoot some kind of sparkly hypnotic ray at anyone. It really seemed that if she wanted to get anything really helpful she'd need to ask someone in the know, or dig really deep and sift through all of the information.

JRS Draco Cargo Hold

Hiding in a crate was not the least dignified thing Nicodemus had ever done, but it did not amount to a position high in the list for him. He was forced to contemplate which moment of prophecy had brought him to this place though. Nicodemus decided that he could not figure it out at this moment, but he had managed to with great difficulty sequester himself among the crate which had cartons of dehydrated drink flavouring. His current concern would be a somewhat disarming smell of orange juice.

pre:
"Hunter, there appears to be a human sized moving biomass in one of the loaded containers.
Cryil has not returned and is still aboard the station."
This was important because Cyril had come up as a biomass as well, not a living entity but a biomass. Either Cyril had managed to sneak back past MAVOC, which Hunter uncharitably wanted to consider after earlier, but was unlikely.
