Actually, the Japanese word for 'blue' is more accurately 'blue/green', not merely 'blue'. (It's just almost always translated as 'blue', unless doing so would be inaccurate.)

Yup. For East Asian languages & culture, a lot of peculiarities are a direct result of ancient Chinese culture and letters, not just the original lack of a separate word for green. (This includes the Japanese inability to handle L/R well.)
