September 27, 1999.

The Lex Luger funeral followed by the debut of The Total Package, Sting beating the poo poo out of Hogan backstage all 1st hour. Kidman/Psychosis Hair vs. Mask, more implosion of the Revolution (Saturn/Benoit/Douglas/Malenko), Rick Steiner getting TV at all. Benoit selling all match for The Cat before a quick bit of offense and a pin. Goldberg crushing Sid's car. Heenan not giving any kind of gently caress (and being hilarious) while clearly pissing off Tony. Berlyn and Karagas botching all over. DDP/Sting/Luger vs. Bret/Flair main event.

It was really something.

Also the same night as "This is Your Life, Rock" was breaking like every wrestling ratings record ever, or something, on RAW.
In fact, the Lex Luger funeral ran head-to-head with it. That probably helped a good bit in contributing to the record.

EDIT:

This is the card that RAW had in opposition that night and...uh...
http://prowrestling.wikia.com/wiki/September_27,_1999_Monday_Night_RAW_results

The Big Show defeated Chris Jericho (w/ Curtis Hughes) by DQ (2:03)
D-Lo Brown (c) defeated Steve Blackman by DQ in a WWF European Championship (1:46)
Kane & X-Pac defeated The New Age Outlaws (Mr. rear end & The Road Dogg) (c) by DQ in a WWF Tag Team Championship Match (2:23)
Mae Young & The Fabulous Moolah defeated Ivory in a Two On One Handicap Evening Gown Match (2:53)
Chyna & Debra defeated Jeff Jarrett & Tom Prichard (1:11)
The Rock defeated Triple H (c) by DQ in a WWF Championship Match (7:15)

:stonk:
For such historic significance, that may have been the worst night in the history of our sport.

So now we segue from WCW being extremely dull and non-sensical bad (Kevin Nash era) to entertaining car-wreck bad (Russo era), to a fusion of two into "Holy poo poo we're losing 60 million dollars a year and all of our draws and even our midcarders and we have no idea what to do anymore" appallingly bad.

Good lord, I forgot that this is also around the time where pretty much everyone in TERRY BOLLEA'S extended family starts getting screen time.
I'm sure if Ed Leslie was still around he would have also been getting a push.

What's even worse is that I can't even hate on it that much because Hogan has been putting on the best matches of the last couple of shows somehow, and manages to have energetic promos and an actual consistent storyline besides the whole New Blood vs. Millionaires clusterfuck.

Which is what should have happened.

That would have been like 1999 WWF signing Mutoh, and then putting him into a program against Al Snow and having Snow win the blowoff.

Of course the Goldberg return and match with Tank Abbott that they've built up for 6 months would be given away for free, but as a mid-card match as well???

Did it even end up popping a decent rating?

Never mind, I looked it up--ratings are actually down for this Nitro (2.8).
But I'd be curious to look at the quarter hours.

Honestly, from this point on, Nitro is pretty dead set in the ratings around 3.0 until the very end.
There does seem to be a slight bump to around 3.5 in the fall of 2000 for a few weeks, but that passes quickly.

For some reason I thought the Viagra on a Pole match was on PPV.

Leave it to Russo to give away all the big angles on free TV!

Like Booker pinning Goldberg in a meaningless gently caress finish match in the last 10 seconds of Nitro!

Even though I already KNOW this isn't even the worst WCW PPV in 2000, on paper it still seems atrocious.

You forgot that the referee who counted the pinfall in the 4-Way of the Tag Title match was actually a member of a stable that featured one of the teams in the match...but weren't in deciding the pinfall.
Meaning he counted the pinfall in favor of his stable-mates' opponents and cost them the title.
This was not a swerve nor turn, but played straight.

Bruno tribute would be nice, but don't cancel Peak WCW 2000 the PPV--we've been building to this all year long.

I refuse to believe this is even the worst WCW PPV of 2000.

It definitely is.

In a 3 month span, Vince Russo and WCW put on New Blood Rising, Fall Brawl 2000, and Halloween Havoc 2000.

Fall Brawl 2000 would be a shoe-in for Worst Show of the Year in a normal year, but it's the best of the 3 by far.

Consider that Fall Brawl had the following:

--Kwee Wee, a talented worker but nonetheless doing a gimmick 100% based off of "Mango" from Saturday Night Live challenges for a Championship in the opening match.

--A First Blood Tag Team Chain Match between the Harrisi and Kronik which needed a ref bump for the Harrisusses to win

--Jim Duggan, making a comeback from cancer, turning heel on the United States by joining Team Canada for no adequately explained reason.

--A 7 versus 7 Tag Team Elimination (which was never explained beforehand on just how many people were it) match featuring Paul Orndorff literally almost dying in the ring in his first match 5 years after retiring with severe spinal issues. The PPV had to be stopped for 10 minutes just to make sure he wasn't permanently paralyzed.
This all led up to a finish to the match (next night on Nitro) as planned...with Nitro Girl Tygress pinning Mike Sanders, Chuck Palumbo, Shawn Stasiak, AND Mark Jindrak in the same match

--A loving MIXED GENDER SCAFFOLD TAG MATCH featuring Torrie Wilson and Shane Douglas (who attempted to get heel heat by burying Paul Orndorff in the previous match who was getting carted off in the ambulance amongst fears that he was permanently quadriplegic)

--A match in which Mike Awesome, in between 3 gimmicks at once in his 2nd month of the company as the "Career Killing, Fat Chick Thrilling, That 70's Guy" went over Jeff Jarrett who only laid down after multiple weapon shots, finishers and run-ins from NO LESS THAN 13 PEOPLE, I poo poo YOU NOT including Sting, Gary Coleman, and the entire starting lineup of the Buffalo Bills

--A completely dull and heatless match in the main event where Booker T finally regained his title from Kevin Nash in a Cage Match that had no spots involving the cage (Booker bladed from an exposed turnbuckle) and a finish that didn't even involve it as well.

And all this still wasn't quite as bad as New Blood Rising, which itself is better than this show.

The Steiner/Goldberg match is probably the MOTY for WCW 2000 and might be the sole reason Fall Brawl isn't the worst.

Kinda upset I was pulled into working tonight as I will miss this, as I thought we would be in the period of dying WCW's "decent but meaningless" wrestling phase, but I looked up a review of the show and it sounds just as bad as the last few weeks.

Meltzer must've have been extremely happy that Russo was gone in order to give these matches the ratings he did, because by all accounts this show sounds just as bad as every other 2000 PPV.

This wasn't the first "Goldberg gets fired" angle.

It was just the one that stuck.
After being pinned from Buff Bagwell's finisher.
In a tag match, where Goldberg was partnered with a midget trainer.
And interference from a planted fan, whose motivation and identity were never explained or even mentioned more than 3 minutes after the match.

I thought on the original PPV broadcast Sid's leg breaking was aired in full? Not only that, but they repeated it over and over to stall for time while they could figure out how to end the match?

So...Sid ended his career being forced to do a top rope that he didn't want to, and THE CAMERAS MISSED IT.

I can't possibly think of a more WCW way to retire.

At this point it's mostly the cruiserweights that are working their asses off and trying to make each other look like a million bucks in order to audition for Fusient, and later McMahon.

Everyone else has checked out completely or is too broken down and/or crappy to care.

Was it taped before the buyout from VKM?

Also we all know the "real" last WCW broadcast was Booker versus Buff....
