I just found this topic, and I'm so happy that someone is doing a LP of this game. I watched a LP years ago by Total Biscuit that never finished due to technical reasons, so it'll be good to see how this game was supposed to end finally.

And I just caught up, reading the entire thread, and see this. Clearly I am the one who breaks Shining Force 3 LP's!

Just wanted to thank you for all your work on this LP that you've done. It's amazing how different Medion turned out to be from how I imagine he would have been way back when I was playing the first scenario myself on the Saturn. I'm glad you've shown us just how the game has been playing out. Thanks again!

Part 84: Oops, I missed the best item

Hey, guess who has a graphics card again? Time to get this show back on the road!

We must hurry if we hope to catch up with him!

I know, Bresby... It would be unfortunate if Prince Arrawnt were to find out about Lady Melinda.

If Prince Arrawnt captures Lady Melinda, he'll use her to threaten Prince Medion.

You escorting me... is causing trouble for your army...

Don't worry, Lady Melinda. Our effort should pay off shortly.

Hey, one of those sprites looks familiar.

I'm not fond of traveling on foot. Even when I want to hurry, my legs prevent me...

:hist101: We'd like to transport him with a pegasus knight, but because of Lord Brutus' breadth, flying is not an option.

 I was able to carry you before the Peace Conference, but you've become quite... heavy... There's no way I could carry you now.

Due to recent problems in the palace, I've been under a lot of stress and have been unable to keep my normal routine.

:hist101: I had no idea things would go so wrong with Lord Brutus' plan. First, we couldn't prevent the Julian army from reaching Aspinia, then we got word of Prince Arrawnt's death... I can't believe Prince Arrawnt's division was wiped out by the Synbios army. Are you sure about Governor Garvin's message?

 The Malorie army must have stayed out of it because of the hostage. If the Synbios army defeated Prince Arrawnt alone, they must be unbelievably strong.

It took too long for Garvin to activate the ancient tank. That gave the Synbios army a chance to strike back. If it had started earlier.

:hist101: What is the status of the ancient tank?

: The mobilization is complete, although I hear they are still working on the cannon. When it is functional, nothing will stop it!

The timeline here is a little wonky. We're now after scenario 1 has finished, but in the middle of scenario 2 chapter 6.

:hist101: Then the Baersol army's orders are to recapture Aspia while supporting Governor Garvin's tank?

General Edmund, you've been quiet... You hope to bring change to the Republic. Are you afraid to face the reality?

Oh right, it's that guy. If you remember from scenario 2, he hitched a ride with Produn back in Barrand, and has been under Brutus' command ever since.

We can't go back now. What do you think of the new world that you desperately wanted? You'll be able to witness its creation with your very own eyes. Now that I took a little nap, I feel a bit rested. Let's resume our march into Aspia!

:hist101: Lord Brutus! Strangers are approaching from the direction of Baersol... It's the Julian army!

drat! The ones who defeated the Produn army... It looks like the Julian army has come to disrupt us.

The Garvin army is moving earlier than expected! We must make haste, Lord Brutus!

What? Garvin is moving... Why didn't he wait for my arrival?

It couldn't be helped. The emperor and the Medion army arrived in Storich. Governor Garvin was forced to head to Aspia early!

:hist101: We can take care of things here. While we are buying you time, please join the Garvin army!

I'll battle the Julian army as well.

General Edmund, you... Why are you volunteering for battle?

Emperor Domaric is in Storich, right? If things go the emperor's way, the Republic will be annexed by the Empire. I won't allow that.

While Edmund's reasoning isn't perfect, remember that Julian's army is technically under the thumb of the empire.

I understand. I'll join the Garvin army and we'll conquer Aspia.

Huh, a battle with the Julian army... The Bulzome Sect will lend a hand as well. We'll make the Julian army pay for defeating our Destonia invasion battalion!

Now that the Synbios army has defeated Prince Arrawnt, they'll be Emperor Domaric's prime target. We must escort Lady Melinda quickly.

We'll be in Aspia shortly. Let's proceed, Julian!

This fight has a pretty small arena and not too many enemies.

Edmund is the most dangerous enemy on the field, but thankfully his AI is really bad and will frequently waste time casting Tornado instead of doing anything useful.

First order of business is to clean up these first three soldiers that aren't even worth experience anymore.

Produn finished up with Blaze. With Slow and Blaze as his magic, he is a more useful spellcaster than Edmund, but has far worse weapon selection. Produn is basically going to be restricted to swords for the entire game, because gently caress ranking up ranged variants.

Next we wipe up the pegasus knight and minotaur nearby to the east.

However, I'm also a man whom Imperial armies feared as a Republican general. I'm not afraid of any of you! If you plan to head to Aspia, you'll have to defeat me!

Once that's done, Edmund says some words and charges in. Of course, this does not trigger the rest of the AI, and Edmund is happy to run in all by himself like a dunce.

While that happens, we beat up everyone else left in the middle. I'm intentionally leaving Edmund alive for now.

Now that the map's clear of everything except the bosses, you know what time it is!

Bonus map time!

Basically, the two reddish chests have to be opened by the thief, while the brown ones can be opened normally. The brown ones have a potion and a dark matter in them, nothing exciting.

Honesty has to bust open this barrel for the thief to pop open the first chest.

Meanwhile, Edmund keeps beating up Gracia, but who cares.

Chest #1 contains a chaos ring, which if you remember nullifies curse. However, cursed weapons aren't really worth the trouble in scenario 3, for reasons we'll find out in chapter 5 or so.

Also, Cyclops punches a dragon into friendship. We won't be using it.

Edmund is also a jerk who beats up Melinda, but thankfully she's sturdy enough to survive a single hit. Isabella will be babysitting her with heals.

For some reason, though, the thief absolutely refuses to unlock the second chest. This was my third time doing this map, and I was getting sick of having to reload, so I just killed the thief and took the chaos ring. Unfortunately, that other chest contains a light of hope, the item that restores all MP to everyone. It's uh, kind of the most useful item in the game, but gently caress it. I'm really loving lazy.

Trust me, I will end up regretting this.

At this point, I waste the masked monk boss, thinking this would end the fight. It doesn't. You have to kill Edmund no matter what.

May as well have his replacement do it.

Produn's level up pose.

Ever since I was tricked by Imperial Genera Garzel, I seem to have been looking for a place to die. I wouldn't have suffered this long if I had been killed when I was defeated by the Synbios army on the bridge, but now I can rest peacefully. Peacefully...

Rest in peace, Edmund. Your characterization was never fully realized, but I still like you way better than Produn.

It looks like you're heading towards Remotest... Even if you make it, you'll never reach Bulzome Temple.. Never...

Is that our destination? Bulzome Temple in Remotest?

That's where I must go. From the destiny set 1,000 years ago.

While the matter of Bulzome Temple is important, Julian... First, we must head to Aspia to meet Prince Medion.

So, the reason why I let Edmund dick around for so long is that I was lead to believe there's extra dialogue if you let him live. The game's script – both the version on Shining Force Central and the text dump I was sent by the romhackers – shows dialogue that implies you can let Edmund live. Since I killed everyone else on the field and even tried to move Julian into the next area Shining Force 1 style, I assume this was something that was cut from the game and goes unused. However, if you'd like, you can pretend the following is Edmund's canon fate:

Why didn't you kill me? I've no country to return to... Can't you at least grant me a place to die?

I don't know of your situation, but why are you in such a hurry to die?

Ever since I was tricked by General Garzel and betrayed the Republic I've been searching for a place to die, Donhort.

You should try to start anew, General Edmund. The weakened Republic... needs generals like you.

I'm... needed...? Is that so... I'll return to Baersol and guard the border while I do some... thinking. I may be able to regain my confidence. If your army is not here to support the Empire, please look after Aspia and Synbios.

Okay, so first you've got to eliminate everyone but Edmund.

Then you go into the cave and get every treasure, but you have to let the thief escape

After that you've got to make sure that Edmund runs out of MP. It has to reach 0 exactly, you can't leave him with 1 or 2, so you may have to reset a few times to get this.

Once that's done you need to humiliate him by tanking his attacks, it's a little known fact that Edmund, and only Edmund, has an invisible durability count on his weapon, so you have to keep taking his attacks until it breaks. You'll know it's broken once he starts doing 0 damage.

From there you need to de-pants him, it should show up as an option for Gracia if you move him right next to Edmund.

Finally, you need to carve a pentagram on your Sega Saturn or PC or what have you and make a blood sacrifice in the name of Ba'al. Edmund should surrender on his next turn.

The write up ended up being a bit longer than I thought; I've put a shortened version below; under a spoiler bar in case anyone would prefer to avoid Shining the Holy Ark spoilers, nothing from Shining Force 3 is spoiled. If anyone wants to see the full write-up, I put it up on the Test Poster

A thousand years ago, the Creator of the world endowed Spirits, the origin of all power, to certain individuals. These people became Innovators, and founded a kingdom, known as the Thousand-Year Kingdom, based on ideals of justice and peace. People lived happy lives in this kingdom, but eventually became greedy and took their lifestyles for granted. This upset the Innovators, and corrupted them into becoming Vandals. The Vandal was a brutal ruler, under him, people lived in misery, and the Spirits stopped being granted to people. Eventually, a mysterious power from beyond the sky destroyed the kingdom, forcing the Vandal to flee. The High Priest of the Thousand-Year Kingdom, foreseeing a time when the Vandal would rise again to revive their kingdom, with the only hope of stopping the Vandal being three Spirit imbued heroes, two male, and one female created a hall of murals below Enrich Castle, before fleeing to a different world, one where time does not exist, with several citizens of the Thousand-Year Kingdom.

Some years before the game takes place, the murals left by the High Priest are translated by the Chancellor of Enrich, Sabato, whom immediately starts preparations; he awakens Galm, to find out more information about the Thousand-Year Kingdom. Having no desire to see the Thousand-Year Kingdom revived, and wanting to know the Creators plan for the world, Galm agrees to help Sabato.

As predicated, Rilix, a weak Vandal, and Panzer, who is the son of a human woman and Galm join forces to revive the Thousand-Year Kingdom; Rilix forces Sabato out of the position of Chancellor, and has the King of Enrich possessed by an evil spirit, before hiring the mercenaries, Arthur, Melody and Forte to hunt for the Ninja Rodi, who has been selected as one of three heroes to receive a Spirit. Sabato also hires two mercenaries, Lisa and Basso, and sends them to aid Rodi.

Rilix and Panzer attack the ship carrying the Holy Ark, a vessel which contains the corruption required to restore the Thousand-Year Kingdom, and the three Spirits, forcing the Spirits to flee in an escape pod containing the Ark.

Arthur, Melody and Forte track down Rodi in an abandoned mine, but the Spirit's escape pod crashes into the mine, causing a cave-in. Forte is possessed by an evil spirit, and the three Spirits possess Arthur, Melody and Rodi.

Arthur, Melody and Rodi make their way to Enrich Castle to save Forte, encountering Lisa and Basso on the way, only to find that they can't kill the evil spirits possessing the King and Forte without killing the hosts. Sabato sends them off to meet Galm for advice.

The three meet Galm, who in turns sends them off to find three Sacred Treasures, each located in a different shrine, with the first Sacred Treasure, the Sacred Sword, having the power to kill the evil spirits without harming their hosts.

The sword is retrieved, and the party manage to defeat the evil spirits and Rilix, whom is rescued by Panzer before the team can kill her. Rilix and Panzer leave for the mine, where the Holy Ark currently is. Following the battle with Rilix, Sabato tells the party to find the other two Sacred Treasures so they can pass the gateway to the world where the High Priest of the Thousand-Year Kingdom still resides, the only one who can release the true power of the Spirits inhabiting Arthur, Melody and Rodi.

While the team are on their journey, they meet a young Julian in Enrich town. Julian is looking for his father, who has been missing after going to Galm's mansion on a treasure hunt. Eventually, someone goes to mansion looking for Julian's father, only to find bits of partially devoured flesh strewn around the mansion. A friend of Julian's father takes Julian in, vowing that he will raise Julian to be the best mercenary ever, in memory of his father.

The party meet the High Priest, and, after a warning that the Spirit's power can be used for evil just as easily as it can good, he performs the Evolution ceremony to release the Spirits power, turning Arthur, Melody and Rodi into Innovators, but during the ceremony the High Priest realises that the Spirit's wish to return to the Holy Ark.

With the new spells granted during the Evolution ceremony, the party are able to break through the mystical barrier the Vandals put up in the mine to stop anyone disturbing them as they open the Ark, and release the corruption within. The team find Rilix and Panzer just as the Ark is about to open, Rilix fights the party again, but loses, and this time is killed. The Ark opens a fraction after Rilix is killed, and, at Galm's goading, Panzer jumps into the Ark, which turns him into a monster. Panzer is also killed, and two of the Spirits return to the Ark, leaving one of the three still imbued their Spirit, though no one knows which one still holds the Spirit.

The party are given a reward by the King, and offered positions in the Enrich army, which most (all?) of the team decline. After saying goodbye to the rest of the team, Arthur leaves Enrich permanently, alone.

I didn't even do that. Just full on attack with Arthur, Basso, Doyle, and Lisa and hope that I could kill it in two turns and then use Return and go back to Enrich to stay in the inn to heal when Melody, Akane, and Lisa were out of MP. I was pretty high after leaving the sewers though, although it was unintentional.

And there's nothing scarier in that game than the words "<enemy name> cast Soul Steal". Well, maybe "Air Polyp T summoned Air Polyp U" by which point you have to run away because at that point you're out of, well, everything.
