pentyne posted:The over the top racism to the chef in France was a bit much. As seriously as they take their food, sabotaging someone who's aiming for a Michelin star or equivalent would be a huge black mark on an assistant chef and if word got around they'd never work at a high end restaurant ever again. What is the obsession with manga always showing an overseas encounter where everyone is super racist to the noble Japanese? I'll give you a hint: it's rooted in the same ideal that caused the same manga to have the best most world renowned cooking school only for the best chefs ever to be in Japan.

It also seems like it's served in a much shallower stew than previously, so it's likely that it's supposed to be eaten meat by meat rather than just getting a big spoonful of whatever. It's different from a stew, yes, but the whole point is that it was supposed to build off of the base of a stew.

BlitzBlast posted:What I don't get is how is being creative with common ingredients not a unique style of cooking? Because he's doing stuff that anyone else could do but is just smart enough to research all of it, while the other guy has a unique thing. Like, no one's coming to Souma's restaurant for the really good ______, they're coming because all of the food is consistently good and interesting. It's arbitrary and bad, but saying that he doesn't have a specialty and is just all-around very good is correct in the context of the manga.

Erina's probably fine, but the giant stretch at the beginning where we don't get to see any of her character aside from "Tsundere and will inevitably be the love interest" and it doesn't help that the anime is currently knee deep in that part of her, uh, arc.

I'll give it more of a no than a yes, because realistic mental helplessness because of abuse is better characterization than physical helplessness because girl. It's still kinda damsel-y, but having her be set up as a competent character and not having that challenged helps I think. There's only so much saving you can do in the Titty Chef anime though

Yeah the last 2 chapters have set up that Eizan was doing a specific thing to make the ingredient's flavor come through, and Soma wasn't next chapter we get the twist that he did a different thing that works instead.

She seems alright so far as a goofy side character, but if this is all she does going forward it's gonna get a bit tiring. Her side chapter was nice, but her main comic appearances seem to indicate we're going to see a more serious encounter soon? Hopefully.

Xelkelvos posted:It was her literally being a *Beep Boop* top class soba making robot and running on autopilot. There's definitely an element of hubris, which may be mistaken for carelessness, that led to the fall. This entire arc is about Central making the One True Cuisine so no one ever has to improve unless they're one of the chosen ones, while the good guys want to continue battle school to push ever onward. The soba lady's entire deal is that she has trained since birth to make the perfect soba that had been handed down for generations and would never think to second guess her own abilities or creations because she's already perfect. Soma's entire character is about constant experimentation and improvement, and as a result he tried his own dish and said "oh this wasn't as punchy as I'm used to, let's kick it up a notch yeah baby" It's basically a perfect parallel to the arc.
