Happy Birthday Abby! She's a gorgeous dog.

Looked up my boy and girl who passed last year. http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?whobeat=1174960 and http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?whobeat=1325456 Looks like my girl Beverly was a more prolific and successful racer. Can't wait til we move and we can adopt more long doggos as we're about to move twice in the next 6-8 months and don't want to put a dog or us, for that matter, through that stress.

Thanks!

Anyone else have an issue with their dogs where they will have trouble lying down after "circling?" I'm noticing this often now that Abby is older. She does her little circle several times, and usually just bends one leg under her body to lie down. However often she has trouble doing this, she starts to flex the leg and then comes back up again. She will try again, and if she continue to have trouble will kind of fall into the sphinx position instead. I assume she's having some sort of joint pain but I'm not sure what I can do.

We have seen this a bit with Jake, but as he has a bunch of metal in his femur it’s kind of a given. I would suggest a glucosamine supplement, if you’re not already doing that. It helps with sore joints by rebuilding the cushioning between them. We buy salmon oil with glucosamine in it, and the oil helps with his coat and nails a lot too. A few squirts on his food each day is all we need. We get tons of comments on his coat when people pet him.

Alright I'll try that, thanks. Is there a dog specific one I should use or is the kind for humans okay? Dosage?

Many of these are not cheap unfortunately. My vet highly recommended Dasquin. I tried both the soft chews and regular chewable pills and had mixed success at getting my boy to eat them on his own. I did see results but as the directions suggest, it took a few weeks to kick in.

We use one from Grizzly Pet Products, it’s salmon oil with glucosamine and chondroitin. We pay $20 for 32 oz. I think it’s called Grizzly Joint Health. Lasts about a month with 2 hounds for us. It’s a liquid and we just pump a few squirts onto their food.

Lately we’ve been seeing a cat in our backyard every few nights or so. We have 8ft high walls all around our backyard so normally wildlife isn’t a problem, but this cat keeps coming back. Sometimes it drinks water out of our pool. I’ve posted about it on Nextdoor asking our neighbors to keep it locked up if they own it but it keeps coming back so it may be a stray. Looks a little fat to be a stray though. Jake saw it tonight and the little fucker just barely got away. If there wasn’t patio furniture in his way he would have had a furry snack, and he’s nine years old with a broken hip. Still fast as heck she he wants to be.

It sat atop the fence and taunted him. I fear that one of these days someone is going to lose a pet in our yard, and it’s definitely not gonna be us. Natural selection I suppose at this point.

Yeah my friends with three greyhounds use that. I made an appointment with an orthopedic pain specialist at my vet for next Monday and then will go from there.

You might want to clarify, if you haven't already, that it isn't "keep your cat inside, it shits on my lawn" but "keep your cat inside, my dog will kill it." You might also want to put a couple signs on your fence in case some neighbors aren't on nextdoor.

That is the longest couch I've ever seen.

Any tips for insanely cold weather? Abby won't use booties. It's below zero all day today and the next couple days. The high on Wednesday is supposed to be -11. Does Musher's Secret help? That's what I'm using.

It’s actually much longer than the photo leads you to believe. We have a long narrow living room so we just pieced together a modular sofa with a bunch of mostly straight pieces to fill it up. We often have myself, Mrs. Beekeeper, both dogs, and sometimes a guest or two comfortably lounging on it.

Here’s a photo with a dog on either end of the couch. It’s a bit difficult to see Jake but he’s there.

Yeah Gannon's a complete rear end in a top hat about boots and we're in Northernish Canada. He just gets shorter walks (like far enough that he poops and then turn around) when it gets brutal and he's fine. He's fine hit the heavy duty dog coat which helps. The weather took a turn for the mild this week so he's been getting a few extra long walks to make up for the lost exercise time last week.

The windchill is -30 right now. I just open the back door of my condo, let her out there, she does her business and runs back in.

I do have an update on Abby, I had an appointment for her last night. Apparently the issue is in her quadriceps and hip area on her upper right leg. There's a lot of tension there. The vet prescribed two weeks of rimadyl (NSAID) and methocarbamol (muscle relaxant). Hopefully that will resolve the issue. Over the last year the problems lying down have been overall infrequent and don't seem to be becoming more common, so I'm hopeful. If this doesn't work I will be scared though, because I would have to get an xray which could show osteosarcoma... :/

Maybe, I dunno. I'll see how she does with these meds for the two weeks and go from there.

Right after the visit she had some spasms and couldn't get up on her back legs. Thankfully this happened while I was still there, so the vet was able to come back out and do some sort of physical therapy and it relieved the issue. She thinks it's just due to her exam. She's been perfectly fine today.

I know that fear of what it could be so I'm very sympathetic. After a few weeks of meds, if xrays are negative and she's still having issues getting up and and down I would talk to your vet about water therapy and cold laser therapy. These options are not cheap ($60-80/session) but I will vouch for their effectiveness in cases where it is appropriate. Your vet should be able to help evaluate if it's appropriate for her.

Also, have you started her on glucosamine yet? It takes a few weeks to kick in so you want to start sooner than later. I got the impression is that it's never a bad idea to do glucosamine for older dogs regardless of visible joint issues.

Good luck and keep us up to date!

There’s a stray greyhound near where I live. It apparently looks just like Bonnie so a couple of neighbours have come knocking to make sure it’s not her. I’ve been out a couple of times looking for it but no joy. It’s apparently very scared of humans.

Anyone have experience in catching a stray? Is it something I should try to do, or just report it to the council? I’m kind of worried about the latter in case it ends up on a kill list.

Hi, the vet did not recommend or even mention glucosamine. She said to do the meds for two weeks and see how she's feeling. And thank you; I will.

She is currently very very tired of the cold and snow. I'm going to find out one day that she really hates when I put the blanket on her haha

My Peter used to snap in the air to demand attention - I didn't realize other dogs did it, too.

So ... is that white striping part of the pattern of your rug, or did your dog pounce on a container of baby powder?

In other news, Ty turned 14 recently. I didn't get many pics, but this one came out as good as any.
