Diogines posted:Is Ishamal having a joke at your expense? No normal man could ever use this as a weapon. Barkof's greatsword is longer but probably weighs half as this damb thing. Well then, it's a good thing we decided not to use greatswords; that thing is ten times heavier than any real sword. What the hell do they make swords out of around here?

It has to be SerSpook then B. I really do not trust her, and even though Ishamal has possibly been hiding things he seems to have our best interests at heart. Winning a bow would be nice, but it isn't worth it to put up with her in order to earn it.

Is there a tradition of older boys squiring for Mighty Men? It would be less combative than what we did with Aaron, but he can take care of our gear for us; which would probably be a more dignified task than just caring for the mules.

HJ and don't hang out with Azz. If Ishamel truly thinks this is important, we should go along with him and visiting Azz's sanctum will be a distraction. We can come back later if we have to.

I haven't posted much and don't know how much this will count for, but I remain almost totally behind both Smattas and Tudiya as the representatives of order and justice in this dangerous land. Enkidel may not have been a perfect follower, but enough of his mind supports them that it isn't fair to dismiss him as having no use for them. Should we pray to El to save us from every issue that comes our way? Probably not, but to ask him for the strength to avoid breaking his strongest taboo should not be too much to request. In short, even if El and Smattas aren't very happy with us at the moment for breaking the fast; some genuine repentance combined with the desperation to not become a cannibal could very possibly get us some results.

I don't care about the first two choices, but the last should be LMM. Being around Indor is a horrible idea and will almost certainly get us punished by the authority figures that we should be as close to as possible.

Also, bronze can just be poured into a cast to make perfectly serviceable products while iron has to be specifically worked. That and it takes a lot of work and practice to prevent your iron from turning out as either wrought iron, which is too soft to hold an edge and will bend if you hit anything, or cast iron, which is too brittle and breaks easily.

Is it considered to be shameful for a Mighty Man to have non-Mighty sons? Also, won't any children still have a good chance of becoming moderately Mighty due to having Tudiya as a maternal grandfather? We know from Aaron that the sons of his daughters can still be quite powerful even if the daughters themselves cannot be Mighty.

Assuming we do try to bring in a live minotaur, we should do a trial run to Zepath first. It will give us the chance to hammer out any problems with our initial plan and since Tudiya knows we are bringing it we can coordinate with him to keep the civilians out of the way in case it does break out.

Changing my vote from O to Q. Also, we should get the gems cut by a Mighty Jeweler (I assume there is at least one) before giving Paebal his share. He'd probably have to make due with a lesser cutter if we gave him the raw gems. After that, make one of the gems into a ring.

Make it clear to Rimmush that Tudiya succeeded in getting us and Jalitha out because he took a small party, grabbed us, and got away before the demons could muster major resistance; while an army would be seen coming long in advance and would face serious demons on the level of Eyescream. Since we won't actually specify what the minor resistance we faced was, he'll believe it to be Tudiya's claim of armies of cannibals and minor demons and should think that he would be up against far greater opposition than that. If he wants to mount a full scale invasion of Athar he should consult with Tudiya and Ishamel so they can coordinate their forces.

Those things have material worth, but they're not sacrifices, so they're useless as a measure of faith. Shiny things aren't inherently bad either. One of the things we could have taken on our trial was a gold statue, with the idea being that if we can survive for a month while lugging around a heavy and useless object then we wouldn't have to look for a sacrifice.

We should definitely offer to bring Bagar into our home for the time being, he's traumatized and we owe it to him to help him adjust. We can work on teaching him the native language and try to figure out something he can do for work later; he'd probably be able to find something involving the water to do. For Ruth, also offer to take her in. She can't be feasibly raised without someone who speaks Athar on hand for a few years; and Naomi is the least busy amongst that limited populace. Like what happened to us, we can put off the question of adopting her for a few years. In both cases, defer to Danal if he really wants to do something different with them; Tudiya will probably talk him out of it if he has something truly foolish in line.

Also, no matter where we decide to send Ruth, we should try and get Jalitha and Naomi involved in her upbringing as much as possible. They'd both like kids, would be good influences on her, and everyone who speaks Athar is a person who can keep her from getting too loney.

Are the walking dead from the Old Tales basically just zombies, or is it plausible for a demon to have possessed Shushem's body and use it in such a way that it would be virtually indistinguishable from being alive? Alternately, are there demons that can survive being decapitated; with the possibility of Shushem being one of them disguised as a human?

B, H, K, U. The smith's wealth will allow him to cover for the other old men as a final act of charity, taking the medicine is the option most likely to win with the least interaction with Indor, Bagam definitely seems to be doing better but it could just be having a quiet place and simple work to keep busy, and it seems like the most diplomatic way of convincing Danal that it isn't safe to bring Ruth and isn't practical to stay behind.

We should consider sending David and his mother to Dor. It's the closest city, he'll be safe in case the norcs come back, his uncle will probably be happy to have him and more willing to contribute to any future efforts if we know we saved his family, and when he's old enough we can work with him to round up some younger Mighty Sons, adventuresome commoners, and any Ibleamites still living to rebuild the city.

I concur. We need to spend more time with Aaron, considering he's not much older than us and tends to give good advice. I have no doubt that Ishamel and Tudiya have our best interests at heart, but their advice tends to be influenced by whatever his master plan is and unwavering faith in El respectively (Which also applies to Zeb); and isn't always easy to accept. Not to mention the fact that they are so much older than us that they also have a totally different perspective on you.

Bularin posted:Wrong on both counts. The Romans used short swords for their line troops with spear units supporting the flanks. The lorica segmentata was banded plate that left the wearers arms, legs, neck, and face completely unprotected. And while Roman onagers are good engines, they lack the range, power, and fire rate of a counterweight trebuchet. That said, they do have elements of the legions. The tight formations, strict discipline, and extensive use of javelins and tower shields, not to mention the fact that the minotaurs are kind of being used as an auxila, are much more Roman than Late Medieval. Also, Romans at their peak would be using Ballistae, not Onagers; the latter were a later invention as the decline of the empire made Ballistae harder to produce. Plus, give us a little credit; we're in the Bronze Age not the Stone Age and they haven't demonstrated the use of crossbows, gunpowder, or cavalry.

The big thing with the metal is going to be getting as much support from the well-respected members of society as possible when we bring it up. Zeb and Ishamel are the big ones here, if they can confirm that it isn't demonic that will go a long way towards swaying Tudiya. Don't stop at them though; get as many smiths as we can behind us and bring both our Mighty Balls and any high status Common Balls. Aaron's a bit skeptical at the moment, but I think he'll be easier to convince than Tudiya; try our arguments out on him first. If we fail, then we know what we'll have to work on while if we succeed that's another big name in our corner. Tudiya may be deeply conservative and religious, but he's not cruel or stupid and I do think he can be convinced. It helps that we already know of iron's existence, so if we can show him that it's a natural material that we just don't know how to work rather than the product of some demon that's another step towards convincing him.

If it were Tudiya telling us to give it up I might be a little skeptical, but Zeb has always been supportive of our eccentricities. He doesn't care that we consort with Melachim worshippers or make use of Indor's trinkets, and the latter at least we know to be at least a little supernatural in a way that goes against the church. If he is telling us to give up the steel, then there must be some reason beyond blind dogma; even if it is just that if it got out it could cause a schism.
