2. Free to Play 3. Factions 4. Don't Play Alone 5. New Features 6. Performance 7. FAQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb90FBLfPBA 1. Planetside 2 is Sony Online Entertainment's 2012 free to play open world MMOFPS. The game is centered on the conflict between three factions - the Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, and Vanu Sovreignty - as they battle for supremecy in an infinite war on the planet Auraxis. Planetside differentiates itself through scale. Each of the game's maps is 2x2 kilometers, and can hold up to 2,000 simultanious users. This leads to battles unheard of in other shooters - an individual fight in Planetside 2 can have as many players per side as most other shooters do on a single server. Hundreds of infantry, dozens of tanks, and flights of aircraft can be operating in a single fight at any given moment. The game is also almost entirely open world. Outside of the transit between the game's massive maps there are no instances, and everything is permenant. If a faction conquers a major facility, then that facility is theirs until another takes control of it from them. On top of that, Planetside 2 has a large amount of customization and progression. Players unlock upgrades and new equipment through certification points, which are effectively experience, and they can be poured into any of the games six classes, seven vehicles available to each faction, and attachments and upgrades for a huge arsenal of weapons. If a lot of this sounds too good to be true, check out this video, recorded by an SOE employee who followed an outfit for one night in a live server. 2. SOE was eager quick to hop on the cash train that is F2P, and Planetside 2 may be the largest intentional foray into the field yet. Unlike a lot of other F2P games Planetside has had a significant amount of time and resources put into it. The production qualities are actually surprisingly high - the game is very good looking, and has a very decent amount of content. As a result, there's an in game cash shop, but it's relatively unintrusive. And here's the catch. The game's progression is slow enough that a free user is going to have an awful time trying to unlock new weapons and abilities at the same time. Putting in some cash to purchase new weapons, buying a subscription, or both, is highly recommended. Planetside 2 is often described not as Pay to Win, but Pay to Fun. The other downside is that there's effectively no way to stop hacking. Because there's no monetary barrier for entrpy cheaters quickly and easily return to the game. This, combined with the game's easily exploitable netcode, nets an experience that can be incredibly frustrating at times and leaves a large blemish on an otherwise excellent experience. And, finally, as most F2P games are want to do, Planetside 2 launched prematurely. A lot of critical features were not implemented at release, and the game is still pretty rough around the edges. It's most noticeably missing critical metagame features at the moment, as the game's release date was pushed forward by several months, if not more. 3. During creation every character is assigned a faction by their player. These faction choices are permanent, but a free user is able to have up to three different characters in any combination of factions they want on any servers. Effectively, your faction is your team, and the other two are your enemies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHN9CdBqSYM An authoritarian government that leverages military might to maintain strict control over the colonial citizens. The Terran Republic is obsessed with the preservation of law and order and are thus seen by some to be an oppressive and dictatorial force, but many view the TR as the only hope for lasting security on Auraxis. TR are a faction built around conventional weapons and conventional tactics. They may only use regular bullets, but they use a lot of regular bullets. TR weapons generally have the largest magazine sizes available and are matched with high rates of fire, making their weapons dangerous at close quarters. This is offset by their weapons generally having the jerkiest horizontal recoil. TR vehicles are fast, and similarly excel at close range. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErA4jNfVSIM Rebels, freedom fighters or terrorists? The New Conglomerate operates as a loosely organized band of dissidents, vehemently opposed to the strangehold that the Terran Republic has on Auraxis. Led by an unusual quorum of outcasts, industry titans, pirates, and former military leaders, the New Conglomerate is unwavering and prepared to achieve their goals by any means necessary. Rednecks with railguns, the NC are intended to to be presented as rag tag freedom fighters. Their weapons are a combination of cartridge based rounds and railguns. In gameplay, this means that NC have the slowest firing, hardest hitting weapons, that have high cone of fire bloom and vertical recoil, and benefit greatly from single shot firing. NC vehicles are slow and cumbersome, but make up for it with heavy armor, inertia, and shotguns. Hypothetically. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkTnvST9Teg Vanu has taught that only through technology can humanity evolve it’s next state of existence. The Vanu Sovereignty is extremely advanced, employing powerful alien technology on the battlefield. Their singular purpose is to uncover the secrets hidden away in the hidden artifacts scattered over the surface of Auraxis and they will annihilate anyone who interferes. The mandatory alien technology faction, the Vanu are middle of the road between TR and NC. They have accurate, relatively high rate of fire weapons like the TR, without as much recoil, but their weapons are also accurate and useful at long range. VS firearms also have no bullet drop, and have some of the highest aimed down sight movement speeds. Their vehicles have a gimmick for extreme mobility and stability. 4. One of the biggest mistakes Goons and pubbies alike make when picking up Planetside 2 is forgetting that the first three letters in MMOFPS stand for Massively Multiplayer Online. Like all modern MMOs, Planetside 2 has player organizations, called Outfits. Trying to play without an Outfit in Planetside is a pretty awful experience, unless you're inhumanly good at first person shooters, or autistic. Instead, try to find a Goon outfit to play with, or at very least a good pubbie one. NORTH AMERICA GOON OUTFITS faction: VS // server: Mattherson (East) // name: Earth's Special Forces [GOKU] // leader: Luigi Thirty (SA) // mumble: mumble.bfgoons.com port 3150 PGS Thread faction: NC // Server: Mattherson (Eeast) // name: Higby's Heroes [GOON] // leader: Admiral Snuggles (SA) PGS Thread 5. A lot has changed since November. While the game isn't really in a release ready state yet, it's certainly getting quite close. -Lattice System! It's a new influence system that works almost exactly like Planetside 1 (thank God). Indar and Esamir have both been updated. -Alerts! Automated server events which encourage playing on a specific continent. People know what Amerish looks like now! -Less retarded base design! When a continent is updated for lattice it's remodeled. Now featuring revolutionary design techniques like "defensible positions" and "walls". -Tons of balance and mechanical changes! SOE has made dozens and dozens of iterations, and they don't seem to be stopping any time soon. Most of them are actually good. -A new vehicle! The Harasser transport is a buggy that can mount a secondary tank weapon and has room for three. It's fun. -Cosmetic items! Dozens of new hats, glowing pants, and other dumb garbage for you to waste your money on like the rest of us. -Optimization! The game runs significantly better than it did at release or in Beta. -New weapons! SMGs, pump action shotguns, doom lasers, revolvers, and more in the pipe. -VR Training Area! Now players have access to a faction exclusive practice/trial area where they can use any weapon, vehicle, and unlock freely. No unlocks, no resources, no cooldowns. -An actual loving tutorial! Of course, you still won't know what's going on. If you quit playing Planetside 2 because of a lack of metagame, try checking back in If you quit due to the game's maps becoming stagnant after hundreds of hours, now is a good time to come back. Again! Esamir has received a major revamp, with nearly all of its bases changed or completely replaced, and actual terrain features added. It's like a whole new continent. Amerish's revamp should arrive fairly soon as well, with Hossin finally being added in the coming months. 6. As a game trying to track hundreds of players, and perhaps thousands of projectiles at once, Planetside 2 is incredibly reliant upon the CPU. The fact that it's made by SOE, and as such is poorly optimized, doesn't help it along. That said, here are the requirements. quote:Minimum System Requirements (and these are the MINIMUM, expect terrible FPS!) AS A NOTE: If you are planning on upgrading your system to run Planetside 2, do NOT get an AMD CPU. The already poor optimization is even worse on AMD CPUs. Intel is by and far the preferred choice, see the SH/SC system building thread for more. USE THESE SETTINGS TO MAKE YOUR GAME LOOK PRETTY code:
7. Which faction should I play as? Any of them are viable, and you can have characters in all three factions on the same server. Remember that Outfits are faction specific. This game sucks and I get owned constantly. Why? Chances are you are playing alone. See immediately below. Which outfit should I join? Just join some Outfits and try them out until you can find one that’s what you want. Just keep in mind that, at the moment, the active Goon outfits are all NC and VS. I finally saved up 1000 certs, how do I know which unlocks are worth it? PS2 has a trial system built into it, allowing you to trial a weapon once for 30 minutes. You can only trial one weapon every 24 hours. Alternatively, players can use VR training to test out any weapons and vehicle upgrades before purchasing. Otherwise, ask away in the thread, and it’s more than likely that a Goon can tell you if your investment is a sound one. How do I get more bullets for my tank? There are vehicle ammunition towers scattered around the bases. Not all of them have them, but they can be discerned by the floating bullet holograms on them. Likewise, aircraft have landing pads with ammo symbols on them that will refill their ammunition. Some of them are broken, though. I keep on shooting this stupid generator and nothing is happening, what gives? Press E right next to it. Also the ensuing explosion will kill you. I don’t have any more grenades, what’s going on? Restoration kits, grenades, landmines, c4, etc. are all purchased with infantry resources and must be bought and refilled manually using a weapon terminal or opening the class menu. Fortunately, there is an option to automatically purchase consumables whenever you resupply at a terminal, making managing them relatively simple. When it works. There was a new patch and my game runs like garbage. What should I do? Try deleting your useroptions.ini file in the Planetside 2 install folder. This well reset your graphics settings, but it has helped some Goons in the past. turn off the TV fucked around with this message at 21:15 on Nov 12, 2013 |

I haven't played in a while, but I figured I'd check out the patch notes. "Each region is connected to only a handful of other regions, creating clear conquest lanes" Er, what is this? Does anyone have a screenshot? Does this make it more like Planetside 1 in terms of how territory is laid out/taken?

Excellent OP Was so excited about the NC vehicle shotgun changes until I got to the last lines and saw the damage got crushed. It'll still be the better AI choice if the enforcer's splash damage is nerfed equally. I just hope there's not many people who like to shoot tanks with rockets from >20m. Especially not people with shields that will protect them from the per shot damage loss of 1800. Looks like the Enforcer will be the better up close weapon still by virtue of the shotgun being so bad, which is good because the "slight decrease" to velocity of 100m/s is really going to hurt it at range. Still more than it used to be but geez SOE, if you want this tank to be an up close brawler increase its base speed or pivot rate, don't just change all the secondaries to be better up close. It's described as a HEAT round explicitly now though, so maybe the splash is not so lovely now? All the new secondaries seem like they'll shred base turrets though. Also it seems like they're being tuned around being useful on a shaky, fast platform. I can maybe see the modified enforcer being useful on a Harasser, but probably not more than a halberd unless it does a lot more damage to armor than they phrased it as. Conc grenade changes are great, what is intended to be a reduction in active time is going to end up being an increase in time spent shooting concussed people now that I can toss one in a doorway then rush in

TR get the OP changes as usual. "Minor adjustments to most TR iron sights and scopes to give a more consistent sight picture across different weapons." Maybe now a 1x won't be absolutely REQUIRED to shoot their guns while scoped? I'm definitely excited for Lockdown - I assume the best use will be like I use Prowler anchor, which is to anchor, shred a guy, unanchor, scoot, repeat.

I see that they're finally trying to hamfist some meta into this thing, have they talked about whats coming in June? Are "outfit owned facilities" simply going to have a little outfit flag flying on them? I hope they do add some mmo like aspects to this game, I'd probably come back in a heartbeat if there was more to it than capping buildings. Not to say that it wasn't fun, but it had no lasting power for me.

Nakar posted:Actually I have a question about this. What are the advantages to using ironsights over a 1x Reflex or IRNV? The IRNV has its obvious pros and cons (nice crosshair, illuminates people, but reduces view range and makes people indistinguishable by faction), but my understanding is the 1x Reflex comes up faster and obscures less view than the ironsights do. While the TR/NC ironsights are decent and their Reflex sights are not perfect (the VS has the opposite situation, kinda bad ironsights but an incredible 1x Reflex), it still seems like an improvement. Iron sights have more zoom than a 1x scope (1.35x) and leave more of the screen open. Also, they are quickest to ADS but I think reflex are the same time. I know iRNV feels more sluggish to get situated. VS/TR reflex aren't bad though VS are the clear winners. NC's reflex sights are pretty awful but we have the best iron sights, so use those. I use iron sights on my Gauss Rifle S and it's stupidly accurate at even huge distances.

I wonder why they even have the hex system in place now still (even if it only exists as a visual for the map). Planetside 1's map was pretty simple and functional and, unless I'm mistaken, the lattice system introduced this patch will work almost exactly like the original did in PS1. Why even bother with hexes any more? I can't wait to get back from work today to try out the vehicle weapon changes. I'm really hoping the modified Enforcer will be useful, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I just imagine zooming around in a harasser with that thing, shotgunning mans at 90kph.

Played around in the VR a bit. ZOE seems to make you walk as fast as a normal max sprints, no change in our sprint speed. No idea how much it increases damage taken, seems to be at most a 20% increase in damage on our AV weapons. Didn't even waste time with the AI weapons. So, adrenaline shield or max reload speed on my dalton and enforcer? Maybe the last rank of tank buster ammo.
