Poker has always been a TV staple, in fiction. It's got a more blue collar vibe, isn't the go-to for casino scenes like blackjack or roulette or craps (talk about something that doesn't make sense), and can easily be played at the kitchen table. Love me some blackjack even if I am terrible at it. Although I wish you could gamble on backgammon in more places because I'm awesome at backgammon.

What was 21 trying to say during that meeting in season six episode 2 with the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend where they kept interrupting him

Ghost Leviathan posted:Was a bit of a plot hole when Casino Royale changed it to Texas Hold-Em poker or whatever, because that's more luck-based than the card-counting skill that Bond's strategy in the original book relied on, iirc. You can math your way to a big edge in poker as well. The bad guy gives a hint of this early in the movie where he tells someone their odds of hitting the outside straight they're chasing. The bigger issue is how insane that hand is. There's four players in it (why not just a one-on-one between Bond and the guy he's trying to bankrupt?) and their hands are flush, full house, higher full house, and straight flush. It's bananas.

lol because it’s a movie and high card high card one pair two pair isn’t dramatic at all

Those hands also tend to be where the big money gets kicked in. If it's high card high card one pair two pair, it's a lot easier for any of those guys to fold. With a high full house, it's a lot harder to fold to a possible straight flush.

Going through the show with the commentary. I love that they open season three's commentary with Doc Hammer saying that 24 dies in the season.

I just watched the low-budget indie comedy/"horror" movie Dave Made a Maze, which happens to star a Mr. James Urbaniak. It was a lot of fun, and it's on Hulu, for anyone who has it.

Oh Jesus nearly every episode in season 3 they mention 24's upcoming death. This season's commentary is the best so far and I hope it gets better with each season. gently caress, I can't believe I've seen the show so many times without delving into the commentary.

When I listen to the commentaries, slowly Doc and Jackson just turn into Pete and Billy. Especially Jackson, he really does sound like Billy without the lisp. THough they straight up admit if they need some stuff for an episode they just have the two of them talk to each other. Like Watch and Ward. "How many Yaz albums for you have on this thing?"

They talk about such random poo poo most of the time but there is interesting stuff buried in there. Most of the stuff that jumps to mind is the cut content. One of my favorite things is that the investors were supposed to be comical draculas but they couldn't think of a third famous dracula voice so they had to write them to be silent. Or that Scaramantula's tragic backstory was that children made fun of him for having eight fingers on one hand. VictorianQueerLit fucked around with this message at 11:37 on Apr 16, 2018 |

They'll often point out animation mistakes or things they wanted done differently and it's really neat.

My favorite one was Dermot's mom, apparently on fan forums people were trying to match the siloute to figure out who it is and they admited they just used a generic character model because at the time they didn't really had an idea who Dermot's mom was gonna be. Also because of the commentaries, I now am very aware of the background characters and how often they use/recycle them in crowded scenes.

The best thing about the commentaries is how they will go off on a joking tangent about something like "Oh yeah, next season we're going to introduce a flamboyant gay character whose catchphrase is 'Boom! Yummy.'", and then five years later when the new season begins you realize that they actually followed through on it.

Saint Cloud shows up SO MUCH before he becomes a person. The latest season is sort of disappointing, since it doesn't get any of that sort of fractal complexity of characters getting introduced and then bumping around against everything, since almost all the new characters die the episode they're introduced, in addition to most of the newer characters from the previous season not being around.

I was confused the same way because Pete White seems to be based on Doc Hammer but isn't voiced by him. And they just look like their voices would be the other way around

He (or Hammer?) pointed out a similar issue at the end of The Invisible Hand of Fate, when Brock pulls Adrian off the road to park by Pete White's trailer. It's just... ugly animation, sorry to say. Awkward.

The one thing they kept consistent through the commentary is how they just don't like Baron Underbite at all because they can't really think of anything to do with him. Only took the last season to finally kill him off.

Over on the old Adult Swim boards, before they changed it from a relatively standard forum organized by topic (like, say, Something Awful) to a low-rent Reddit clone whose disorganization precluded actually discussing any of the shows, one thing that kept coming up was this whole contingent of Venturoos who swore up and down that Jonas Venture was alive. Their favorite refrain: "blah blah blah Action Man said Dr. Entmann was the first to go blah blah blah that can't possibly mean what it means in all other similar fictional scenarios where they're not talking about people killed in battle but instead people who die off after retirement blah blah blah Jonas is alive because every line of dialog by every character is to be taken totally literally and is thus canon!" So, don't start with this stuff about not believing in deaths on the show. Only a world-class idiot would say something that gave that "debate" a chance to start anew.

Jonas Venture actually died in college. Someone who knew him well was able to use his superscience stuff and some of the Venture family superscience stuff to transform himself to look like Jonas. Jonas "died" to the outside world only many decades later when the transformation process finally started to break down, and that character ended up finding a way to fake "Jonas" dying. That character is still alive to this day (in his own body, but he's looking younger than he should because his body didn't age while superscience transformed) and his name is....
